Character & Character = platonic or familial or other non romantic pairing
The "x" is for shipping. The "&" is for not shipping. Please for the love of god stop putting like... parent/child character relationships with the "x" in the tags. Not only does it give me palpitations. Its just.... not the way to lable it! I am BEGGIIIINNNGGG!!!
(I understand not everyone can know everything always. But PLEASE!!! this has been this way for fucking EVER i am pleading with people to just.... do this correctly!!)
i saw your post on the icemav and hangster and omg i have THOUGHTS. the last few weeks the icemav tag is packed full of hangster and it's fine, i have no problems with hangster but there really is not a lot of icemav only stuff being made atm so i fully get what you mean (i think i could have interpreted your post wrong, it is getting late haha) anyway, just wanted to say i get what you mean! hangster is just not what i'm looking for but it's EVERYWHERE haha
Hi Anon,
So it wasn’t exactly what I was thinking about, but it was probably the reason why I got frustrated enough to post without realizing it!
One of these days it would be great to get Pairing Rankings on AO3 and maybe we could sort out fics where our main ship only secondary.
So... this has been a bit of a pet peeve for awhile when it comes to tagging on any fanfiction site but when you see a pairing on there with say... Jason/Michael, who do you think is topping?
Because long ago I read something, no idea where or what, possibly Japanese writing etiquette I really don’t remember, but it said when it came to pairings order matters. If you have Jason in front of Michael, then Jason is the one topping. If it were Michael/Jason then Michael is top. And I thought, yeah that makes sense, then when I look up a story I know who’ll be doing the do especially if it’s M/M or F/F because M/F is usually clear unless the Female is the dom.
Easy right? Apparently not!
Now my biggest peeve is in the Resident Evil fandom right now. I keep seeing Leon/Mr.X and sadly no rookie cop topping beefy tyrant... and I get that people put up the tag and when one is already up to just hit enter when it pops up but, for me, it’s a big deception. (Same with stories with a million tags on it promising this or that and when read not even half the things are even present, or even one fourth, it’s frustration)
So here I am now to ask should name order matter when it comes to tagging? Am I the only one who thinks it matters or am I just crazy? Has this tagging etiquette been lost to time and am I just the old person waving my fist to the empty universe?
I only ask because one of my stories got one line of something like ‘fun read’ then a full paragraph saying ‘Friendly reminder’ order doesn’t matter and I’m weird for thinking it does. To which I am a bit insulted someone took my end note rant that serious enough to prompt that sort of reply.
Seriously... who reads a 13k story then spends more time responding to the foot note than the story itself!? *shaking my head*
So I know I’ve seen a post like this floating around but that was a long time ago so I figure it might be time to make a new one. These are the relationship IDs on AO3 for a handful of VLD ships (this list is non exhaustive):
The pairing ID numbers above can be used both to search for content you want, and to exclude content you don’t want. It works like this:
Go to the Voltron Legendary Defender tag on AO3. You will see a grey box on the right side for sorting and filtering your search within the tag
Use the filter_ids code in the “search within results” field as-is to search for something you want. For example putting filter_ids:1216119 will return all the fics tagged with Allura/Keith
Adding a “-” in front of it will filter out that tag. So putting -filter_ids:10209319 will return all the fics EXCEPT the ones tagged with Shiro/Keith
You can mix and match filters!
You can remove 2 tags (here we’re taking out both Shiro/Keith and Lance/Keith)
You can search for one tag but remove another (here we’re searching for Allura/Shiro but removing Lance/Keith)
You can search for 2 tags you want (here we’re searching for fics tagged with BOTH Shiro/Keith and Lance/Pidge)
And you can just keep mixing and matching pairing filters how ever you want to refine your search (for example, filter_ids:10209319 filter_ids:276513 -filter_ids:276512 will return fics tagged with Shiro/Keith AND Lance/Pidge but EXCLUDING those tagged with Lance/Keith)
How to find pairing IDs yourself
So maybe the pairing you want to filter isn’t part of the list I gave at the top of this post, or maybe you want to use this method in another fandom. No worries! Here’s how you do it
First, got to the main fandom tag
Then use the options on the right to search for the tag you want (for this example I’ll use Hunk/Keith)
Your search results should look like this. ***Notice you’re still in the VLD tag; to get into the actual pairing tag you need to find and click on it among the tags listed on the first fic in the search (it shouldn’t be too difficult)
Now you’re in the actual pairing tag. Notice the button on the far right called RSS Feed? Click on that
It’ll bring you to a page like this. It’s a little freaky but don’t worry about it. What you want is the series of numbers in the url. That’s the tag ID number that corresponds to the pairing Hunk/Keith, in this case 277238
Now you’re ready to go back to the main fandom tag on AO3 and use that number to filter that pairing to your heart’s content (filter_ids:277238 to search for it or -filter_ids:277238 to filter it out)
Hope this helped! If it’s confusing or you have more questions feel free to ask me and I’ll answer to the best of my knowledge :D
