DCMK Pairing Week 2018 Day 1: protea cynaroides - Kaito Day
A/N: First try for the pairing week! Figured it was a good opportunity to write some Kaishin again
Kaito crept across the roof of the Kudo household, his socks getting caught on the rough shingles with every step. The drainpipe was only a few feet to the left, a drop of two stories right underneath and he was starting to question the sanity of this endeavor. Shinichi wasn’t worth the price of getting at least one broken arm or leg if he happened to take a misstep.
But then again, he was. Kaito hugged the wooden box to his chest and kept going. One more window over and he’d be in the right spot.
Crouching on the edge of the roof, he looked down at the back garden and the grass gleaming in the starlight. He could get used to this kind of vantage point, sneaking around the tops of buildings in the dead of night to plant puzzles. It was a heady feeling, but he’d ponder it later. For now he had something more pressing to do.
He leaned down with his fingers hooked into the grooves of the drainpipe and peered past the curtains. The room was dark, that meant Shinichi was still downstairs with Ran. They’d be watching a soccer match or catching up on what happened last week. Kaito jiggled the window and slid it open once the latch was undone, slipping inside like a snake into grass. It was almost too easy.
He noticed the cypher cylinder on the bookshelf first, remembered giving it to Shinichi the last time he’d come back from a trip. The pile of worn pages, newer at the top, served as its nest and Kaito knew if he pulled one out it would have his own handwriting on it. When they’d come up with the code, Shinichi had insisted ‘Holmes’ be one of the key words and Kaito had retaliated with ‘Arsene’, but the argument had been almost as fun as solving the encrypted messages themselves.
Kaito crept over to the desk set into the corner and covered with case files. At least his present would be a good distraction from the murder mysteries, Kaito was sure of it. He grinned, setting down the box carefully on the chair and brushed away the stray leaf that got caught in his hair. The surprise was set, he’d completed the mission but he didn’t leave quite yet. The picture tucked under the lamp was new.
It was from this Christmas, the time they’d gone ice skating. Kaito couldn’t recall how many times he’d fallen over and Shinichi had nearly joined him from laughing so hard. In the picture, Shinichi had his arm slung over Kaito’s shoulder while he’s braced against the side of the rink. Kaito doesn’t remember Shinichi taking the picture, instead it’s the memory of how warm Shinichi had felt so close to him after the cold ice.
Putting the photo back, Kaito returned to the window and crouched on the sill for a last look around the room. He’d missed this, it was good to be back.
Too Late
“No way...”
“How could something like that happen to him?!”
"Can you hear me?! Answer me!!”
