Ramón Acín

Ramón Acín was a teacher, painter, and sculptor from Uesca, who was assasinated by fascists on August 6th, 1936, almost two weeks after the Spanish Civil War started.

He was an anarchist affiliated to the CNT (National Confederation of Labor), who took part in the 1930 Jaca uprising, and had to go into exile to France, until the Spanish Republic was declared less than a year later. When the Civil War was declared, he along with other antifascist leaders talked to the city governor, who assured them everything was under control. A day later, the fascists take Uesca, and Acín and his family hide in their house until on August 6th, he hears his wife being tortured. Hearing that, he comes out and the fascists take him to shoot him against the cemetery walls.

He is most famously remembered for his “Pajaritas” sculpture in the city park, which have become a symbol of Uesca.

As a fun fact, there is an identical statue of the Pajaritas in Barcelona, in the Carrer Aragó, as an homage to Ramón Acín and his libertarian ideas.
