🎂💐🎉Happy 34th Birthday, Irino Miyu!🎂💐🎉

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of his career.😲

So I thought I could celebrate his b’day and his 30th anniversary with a follow up of the first trivia post (here) , which I planned since then but never really got the time to do (Well, I did make a short trivia post not too long ago.→ here). I’ve also translated an article of the Meiji University with some more interesting facts Miyu revealed about his time at that university and his career path. → here

So here we go: Irino Miyu Trivia Part 2

- His mother saw the audition announcement for Spirited Away and helped Miyu record his voice on a tape and sent it to Ghibli. Miyu and another boy were selected to come to the studio where both did an audition again, and Miyu was then chosen to play Haku.(Good Friday 2019)

- Miyu got the role of Niwa Daisuke in D.N.Angel because both, director Nobuyoshi Habara and the author of the manga, Sugisaki Yukiru, thought he would fit the image of Daisuke (even before their inital meeting to discuss the casting). Miyu was really touched by it and it gave him more incentive to study even harder for the high school exams. (D.N.Angel Talk)

- Actor Kamiki Ryuunosuke (who voiced for the baby Boh in Spirited Away) recalled, when he, then 8, met Miyu during recording for Spirited Away, 12-year old Miyu was kind and treated him like a little brother. Kamiki would call him „Haku-Nii (Big brother Haku)“. (Kamiki Ryuunosuke no Allnight Nippon Zero 2020)

- In his early days of voice acting as a kid, he found it difficult to do the laughing sound. His mother would tickle him from behind. Or he would practice it in the bathroom. (Music Line, March 2019)

- During school holidays he was mostly busy with stage plays. Sometimes, he would spend hours secretly playing video games at home, when his parents were away. And he would put off doing homework until the last few days. He's always liked doing sports and everything related to physical activity, in school or during holidays. - Miyu was born and raised in Tokyo. (Hairu no Jiyuu)

- When Miyu was born, his mother wrote in her diary that she wished for Miyu to not feel pressured by society's expectations. There may be frustrating, unfair things to happen but he should not let them weigh on him but continue to do the way he wants to and feels right. And that he should never forget kindness, as kindness is strength as well. (Music Line 2019)

- He was a weird kid who didn't have interests in things boys normally have, like vehicles or monster figures and such. He rather liked playing with rocks and sticks.(D.N.Angel Talk)

- He also loved to play in the mud or jump from high places. He particularly loved swordplay with sticks. (anohana 10th Radio)

- Miyu said that he was blessed in that he never got teased by his classmates for being a child actor. Everyone were supportive and he has always got along with his classmates.(Hakataka Ranking 26.04.2024)

- Miyu has always prioritized school. Even though he was busy with his activities as an actor, he managed to get perfect attendance in high school. (Hakataka Ranking 26.04.2024)

- Suzumura Kenichi’s first impression of then 12 year old Miyu was that of an adorable and mature kid who is rather shy. (Osomatsu-san: Let’s go to France!)

- On D.N.Angel Radio he said that he’d sometimes still play hide-and-seek or kick-the-can with his friends in silly moments after exams. When it rained he loved sliding down the street half-naked. (D.N.Angel Radio, Osomatsu-san: Let’s go to France!)

- In elementary school he had piano lessons for six years (he said that his piano teacher was scary xD). (Cuticle Detective Radio Ep.2, 2013)

- On his live Tour TEN (25.08.2019) he played the piano while singing „Asayake“. (Natalie)

- When entering the second year of university, all his friends were seriously thinking about their future career and Miyu started to have some doubts too, as acting was always more a part of his life than a profession to him. So he got all credit points needed for graduation within three years instead of the usual four years, and used the last year to do a lot of projects in voice acting and stage acting to find out whether he really wants to do it for a living or go search for a normal job afterwards. In his fourth year, he was barely at the university except for soccer club activities. (Meiji Daigakuin Interview, Code Geass Re:code, Music Line 2019)

- If he weren't a seiyuu he would probably do something that is related to children, like a teacher or for childcare. (Music Line 2019)

- Miyu actually auditioned for the roles of Lelouch and Suzaku in Code Geass (which he didn’t get obviously). But the director of the OVA series Code Geass: Akito - The Exiled, Akana Kazuki , who knew Miyu from another project, thought that Miyu would be perfect for Akito, because he “saw a small „shadow“ in Miyu that would fit the role” and Miyu got it without audition. It was a role that Miyu never played before and he was not sure if he could pull it off. But he got a lot of encouragement and praise from fans, the cast (Sakamoto Maaya, Matsukaze Masaya) and the director. (Code Geass Re:code)

- Miyu and Toyonaga Toshiyuki are both former child actors, but they never worked together that much. Most of the time, when they met it was for an audition. Miyu jokingly said, that he hates Toshi because they often happened to compete for the same role during auditions (though this doesn’t happen anymore now). - Miyu often lost his voice during recording for Osomatsu-san, because he had to scream a lot for Totty. Sometimes the recording also overlapped with his stage projects, hence his voice got strained. Sakurai Takahiro was worried and gave him cough drops for his throat. (Sheeh! Wave Vol.31)

- Hatanaku Tasuku said that Miyu is his hero. It was thanks to Miyu that he could continue with what he does and he's incredibly indebted to him. Tasuku-kun was new to voice acting and Miyu would take great care of him, guide and teach him to his best ability, which Tasuku-kun doesn't take for granted, especially in a highly competitive environment like voice acting and acting. Miyu would always stay behind and discuss with him about things like the emotions and thoughts going into each line. He also admired Miyu for his brave decision to go on hiatus to study abroad. Many people in this industry are afraid of taking a long break, because you could easily lose your place in the industry. - Miyu went to Tasuku-kun's first live concert in 2019, Tasuku-kun also went to one of Miyu's TEN concert venues (Radio Okarema „Ore ni kamawazu saki ni ike!“)

- Tasuku-kun said that the seiyuu cast for the third years in Haikyuu!!! were all very warm and welcoming, so it was easy to feel included as a newcomer. Especially Miyu would come teasing and trolling him a lot. (Netflix Anime Japan)

- Miyu and Miyano Mamoru once visited Kamiya Hiroshi in his home. When they were about to order something, Miyu said he doesn’t need it because he already ate. But when the pizza was delivered, he was the first to grab a piece. And Miyu and Mamo were so loud while playing video games that it annoyed Kamiyan. (Celestial Station 00)

- As kids, Mamo and Miyu would go to each others home to hang out. Their mothers were good friends too. (Celestial Station 00)

- Makoto Shinkai-san attended Miyu's „Enter the New World“ concert in 2017. And tweeted about it. He said that Miyu's words touched him and he's looking forward to Miyu's future activities when he returns to Japan after his oversea study. (Twitter)

- Shinkai-san also watched Miyu's online live „True to me 2021“ and commented how beautiful and wonderful it was. (Twitter)

- According to Matsubara Shuu (scriptwriter for Osomatsu-san), Miyu never gets angry, no matter what. Miyu is like Totty in a sense that he gets doted (and teased) by everyone of the Osomatsu cast. Another thing is, that Miyu doesn't stick too strictly to fomalities. He sometimes slips into casual speech, though it never feels like he's being disrespectful. Miyu always tries to lighten up the mood as he feels that this would make working together easier and more fun. (Urakata)

- Sayaka Oohara-san once got a birthday congratulatory message from Miyu: „Happy Birthday, Sayaka (her given name)!“ Miyu felt embarassed about the mistake (in Japan, addressing someone by the given name is considered intimate or rude). But she said, that it was the best present he could give her, in calling her by her first name. Namikawa Daisuke and Fukuyama Jun joked, that only Miyu is allowed to do that. (xxxholic Radio ep.5)

- Paku Romi auditioned for Syaoran (Tsubasa Chronicle REservoir) and Sena (Eyeshield 21) but both roles went to Miyu. She didn’t know Miyu back then and later would meet him for the first time when they worked together for Yes, Precure 5 GoGo!.

- Miyu and Uchiyama Kouki auditioned for both Prince and Shindou in Kaze ga tsuyoku fuiteru and were surprised about their casting (Miyu got cast as Prince and Ucchi as Shindou). They usually play the other type of role so it was a refreshing experience for them.(Kazetsuyo – Rajio de hashiro no suki ka)

- In Kazetsuyo, there were long scenes of Miyu’s character, Prince, breathing heavily while running. Miyu once got dizzy after doing one of such scenes. Acting this kind of scenes without actually moving the body is difficult and tiring. Ootsuka Takeo also mentioned how his fingers were trembling after doing this kind of scenes. - When Matsubara Shuu heard Miyu’s voice, he knew he would definitely want him to deliver more tsukkomi lines, so he increased them in the script for Todomatsu. Miyu's voice has a quality to it that his tsukkomi doesn’t sound too strong and „pointy“. (Urakata)

- The producer of Kamiarizuki no Kodomo, Tetsuro Satomi, said that Miyu has a gentle, expressive voice. He particularly singled out Miyu's performance in Garden of Words, noting that most people’s yelling voice sounds annoying, but he doesn’t feel that way in Miyu’s case. (Twitter)

- Director Takana Shirai and producer Tetsuro Satomi of Kamiarizuki no kodomo said Miyu is a fine, young gentleman. Miyu arrived earlier for the recording. But Shirai-san and Satomi-san haven’t eaten lunch yet, and Miyu told them to not mind him and go have their lunch. He sat down in a corner and went over the script, while waiting for them to finish their lunch. (Twitter)

- For Matsubara Shuu, the most noticeable thing about Miyu is, that he doesn't have that strong presence of a „seiyuu“, which makes him a bit different than the rest of the cast. Miyu has a different vibe, more that of an actor than a voice actor. (Urakata)

- Lately, Miyu is into photography. He prefers them without filter and such but rather likes capturing moments of everyday life in his surroundings naturally. His pictures have a bit of a „gloomy“, „sad“ feel to them though, he said. (Music Line 2020)

- The pictures in the booklet of „Life is..“ are actually all taken by Miyu. (Music Line 2020)

- Even though everyone says that Miyu is free-spirited, he doesn't feel himself that „free“. (Music Line 2019)

- Going abroad studying is something he always wanted to do and he felt strongly about it, but his agency always put him off, telling him, that it was not the right time. He felt he had lots to learn and studying abroad could broaden his horizon. „Dare to Dream“ was an album he wanted to make before going on hiatus, because he wanted to answer to his fans wish, it represented his thoughts and feelings. - For the first time ever, he released a photo book that was sold during his live concert in 2017, “Enter the new World” (right before going abroad). Miyu doesn't like being photographed but he made an exception this time because he wanted to thank his fans for their support, and they've been requesting it for years. - He went homestaying in the UK, attended english language course full-time for nearly 3 months, then went on backpacking for one and a half month, travelling around, returned to UK again and attended lessons and workshops for acting and theater. (Music Line 2019)

- He always thought that it would be best to leave the lyric writing to professionals. But during his oversea stay he felt like writing down his feelings and experiences (Maaya-san recommended him to keep a diary during his trip and also suggested that he should hand-write it). At that time he didn't think of turning them into songs and compile them into a full album. (Music Line 2019 & 2020)

- When Miyu attended the AnimeExpo 2017 in Los Angeles, he got to meet the english voice actor of Akito, Solusod Micah, and they went together to eat out. They are still in touch today. Micah recently sent him the english dubbed Code Geass OVA DVDs. (Code Geass Re:code)

- When a friend from oversea (probably befriended during one of his trips before his oversea study in 2017) came visiting, on the last day, Miyu took that day off and they went to Disneyland, after which Miyu gave that friend a plush doll, saying: „Think of it as me.“ (Hairu no Jiyuu) That’s soo cute!♥

- Ishida Akira admitted that he wasn't really that enthusiastic about hosting a radio show with Miyu, mainly because of the huge age gap and he didn't know if he could do it. But he was eventually glad that he agreed to do it.

- Miyu doesn't tell shimoneta (dirty jokes). It's not that he dislikes it, but he just doesn't tell this kind of jokes or say dirty words (xxxholic Radio 5) I saw some fans who commented that Osomatsu-san is a blessing too for them in that sense, because they get to hear him say some dirty words.

- Speaking of dirty words. Many years ago, Miyu borrowed the electronic dictionary from then student Tasuku-kun to look up some words and accidentally saw his search history, which was a list full of dirty words (Yasumoto Hiroki commented that it was his worst luck to have Miyu, from all people, seeing it). - Kamiyan: “One of Miyu’s trait is that his presence always makes the place a fun one.“ (DGS)

-Murase Ayumu said that Miyu is quite the prankster and the mood maker of the cast. Miyu is like Suga in that he has this natural charm that he would lighten up the mood naturally and everyone would feel comfortable. And he tells funny stories. (Netflix Anime Japan 2020)

-Toshi said that Miyu strikes him as a guy who is always in a merry mood and very relaxed. (Kaze ga tsuyoku fuiteru - Rajio de hashiru no suki ka)

- Miyu and Kitazawa Riki met the first time in Kazetsuyo. But Miyu immediately started trolling Kitazawa (Tosshi even thought they knew each other before because the way Miyu acted so familiar with him). - It was also the first time for Miyu and Takeo-kun working together. Takeo-kun said his first impression of Miyu was that he is a kind, sociable guy. He knew Miyu before he was pursuing a seiyuu career and saw him several times, but they never spoke. There was a dinner meeting with the cast and crew of Kazetsuyo. Miyu went straight to him and open-heartedly talked to him. Miyu then joked that he talked to Takeo-kun because he seemed bored, sitting next to Kitazawa. - Saito Chiwa was in a high spirit when Miyu was to appear as a guest in her show M-Serve Style. „He's probably the most wonderful male seiyuu I know. Despite having a longer career he's down to earth, genuine and thoughtful. You just can't help but fall in love with him!“ (M-Serve Style vol.73, 2009)

- TV and Radio personality and actress LiLiCo about Miyu: „When he entered the room he greeted me in such a straightforward and casual way, like we were old acquaintances, and I just fell in love with him.“ „Too bad we couldn’t have him as a guest here today (due to the pandemic). - Naoko Kaori: „When talking about someone who can make both senpai and kouhai laugh with his pranks and has a great communication skill, Irino Miyu came to my mind. On set of Haikyuu he pranked a lot... Miyu-kun has been always really good with communication. Even though he's younger than me I look up to him.“ (Twitter)

- Actress and co-star Mizutani Kaho (in the drama Magabanashi) also said that it was comfortable working with Miyu, because he’s easygoing and open-hearted. (Mynavi, translation with link to original source)

- Interviewer and writer of the Meji Daigakuin article, Ogoshi Mari, tweeted afterwards: “I met with Irino Miyu-san, the voice actor for roles such as Haku from Spirited Away and Takao from Garden of Words, and we did an interview on the campus of Meigaku University. It's exciting to go to the university! And Irino-san was an eloquent handsome guy.” 😊 (Twitter)

- Miyu is a huge Bruno Mars fan.

- He once went to Holland to attend one of Bruno Mars’ concerts. (Big Buzz Artist Special 2020)

- He also listens to some Kpop music lately. He tried doing the dance of NiziU’s “Make you happy“ but was told that he was not good at it. “I will show it again when I get better at it.”😆 (Music B.B., Big Buzz Artist Special, 2020).

- The first CD he bought was „Life goes on“, by Dragon Ash (Music B.B., Big Buzz Artist Special, 2020).

- He never imagined that he would become a singer and release songs in his own name. (Otoboke Pops 2021)

- To be a music artist and release songs under his own name also means to express oneself as an artist. Miyu found it difficult to express himself and wasn’t sure how to be creative as an artist. As a child actor he learnt to be obedient and was always told what to do. He gradually learned to express himself and create as an artist. (Comchat 2020)

- This is also reflected in his career as a singer (and in his songs). He became more and more involved in the creative process and now is choosing the composers/lyricists he wants to work with and what type of songs he wants to make. (Asadesu 2020, Otoboke Pops 2021)

- Miyu once visited Finland, where he got to see the aurora. He also went on a ride with a reindeer and visited Rovaniemi , which is the official Santa Claus Town (Kamiyu in Wonderland 3)

- Next time, if travelling is allowed again, he’d like to visit Africa. (Saijou no Hanashi 2021)

- He’d like to have the power of teleportation. He could just go to other places around the world without wasting time with checking in and out and flights. (Bokura no Music Park 2021)

- His manager would always ask first when calling: „Not forgetting something?“ (Music Line 2019)

- Every year, he makes the New Year’s resolution to not be forgetful. (Music Line 2019)

- However, the alarm devices have run out of batteries and he still hasn't replaced them. (Music Line 2020)

He also declared his goal to stay healthy and well for the following year (since he often didn't feel well during 2018). But just one hour later he would cramp his neck and couldn't move it for four days. So he couldn’t fulfill that either. 😂 Sorry Miyu, but I think that you will probably stay an airhead, a lovable clumsy airhead.😆

- Miyu said (in a message) that Eguchi Takuya is “just a four-eyes“. And that he would one day break his glasses. Egu: „Why! Why! Just the other day he gave me a pair of shoes as a present and we went drinking the other day! We are getting along well!“ (Listen- Live 4 Life)

-Veteran seiyuu Yuuji Mitsuya ranked Miyu second on his list „young seiyuu with incredible skills“ and praised Miyu for his natural, straightforward acting. (Twitter)

- During the recording for Eyeshield 21, Yamaguchi Kappei pointed out to Miyu that he subconsciously restrained himself in his voice acting (probaby saying that he should let himself feel the character more instead of being self-conscious. Sorry, I don’t know how to express this better orz). It was an important lesson for Miyu and influenced him in his growth as a voice actor. (Owari no Seraph Event 2015)

- Yoshino Hiroyuki: “(About Kirafes) Seriously! Miyu is so amazing, like his medley, his dancing, his singing! He’s so cool! I realize once again, that he’s a treasure!“ (&Cast!!! Hour Love Nights)

- Miyu has been and is always the first to congratulate Nakamura Yuichi on his birthday (who has it on the 20th of February). Saku, Yuukyan and Miyu have a group chat, and lately, Saku is now also one of the earlier ones to congratulate Yuukyan. (Washagana TV)

I already corrected it in the first post, but still want to clarify it here: Miyu’s an only child. It’s really embarassing I didn’t realize that the comment was meant to be a joke, even though I thought the whole thing was a bit weird (ppl always say that I’m too serious lol). Anway, I wanted to add it here for those who have already read the first trivia post.

This got a lot longer than the first one. But it’s also in celebration of his 30th anniversary as an actor. I hope, you enjoyed it though.😊 And I don’t know if or when I will do another one, since making this kind of post takes quite a lot of time. And I don’t want to just make a boring list full of text only, so I always try to add gifs, pictures and videos.
