The manor was constructed from 1772–1775 by architect Henry Holland for William Craven, 6th Baron Craven.
It stands in a beautiful parkland setting which was designed by the triumphant landscape gardener Capability Brown.
The portico at the centre of the house originally had a pediment, however this was removed in 1914 and replaced by a balustrade. The roof pitch was also lowered and hidden behind a balustrade.
