Maze & Eve crushing on each other
Eve & Maze Reconcile
Eve walks into Linda’s office to find Maze, alone and sitting on the couch. Maze looks up and then back down upon seeing who it is.
Maze: She’s not here. Left about ten minutes ago.
Eve: Actually... I was hoping to find you.
Maze looks up.
Eve: Can we talk?
Maze: I think we just did.
Maze gets up to leave.
Eve: Maze, please, it’ll just take a minute.
Maze: Oh, I’m sorry. See, I had a “minute” months ago when you were still here, but now I’m all out.
Eve smiles sadly and looks down. Maze can’t help but feel badly and sits back down.
Maze: Fine. You have a minute.
Eve looks up in surprise and smiles more cheerfully, making Maze flustered.
Maze: Well?
Eve: Right.
Eve starts pacing.
Eve: What I came here to say is... I’ve been thinking... and I think we should start over.
Maze: What?
Eve: Well, I’ve realized I’m still making the same mistakes. I’ve been so focused on trying to fix the past, our past, that I haven’t been thinking on our future. I’m not the same person I was. I’m trying to be better. I want to be better... for you. So I’m thinking, you know, clean slate. And I can - I can spend every day proving myself to you.
Eve stops pacing and looks at Maze, hopefully. Maze meets her gaze but then looks down.
Maze: I can’t.
Eve’s face falls.
Eve: Please just give me chance. Just one, that’s all I -
Maze: I gave you a chance before. I can’t start over.
Maze stands up, still looking down, and starts walking to the door.
Eve: Why not?
Maze: Because...
As Maze gets closer to the door, Eve grabs her hand.
Eve: Because why?
Maze freezes, whips around angrily and finally looks her in the eye.
Maze: BECAUSE I LOVED... you.
Shell-shocked, Eve doesn’t respond. “The Story” by Conan Gray starts to play.
Maze takes a few breathes to calm down, then frees her hand. She gives Eve one final look, then turns around, takes a step to the door and puts her hand on the knob. She exhales and starts to turn it. But just then, Eve hugs her from behind. Maze tenses up. Music gets softer.
Maze: Eve, what are you doing?
Eve: I promise, I will never leave you again.
Maze: Well... I want you to leave.
Eve: I don’t think you do.
Maze: *laughs humorlessly* ’Cause you know me so well.
Eve: You’re used to being alone and pretending you like it that way, so you’ll feel less lonely. But it never works.
Maze, still facing away from Eve, starts to get emotional.
Eve: And when you do let people in, they let you down... myself included.
Maze’s eyes are welling up.
Eve: I don’t deserve you, Maze. *laughs* I’m not sure anyone does... But you don’t deserve to live the rest of your life alone. And I don’t want to live the rest of my life without you... And I hope... that a part of you still feels that way about me.
Maze closes her eyes. Tears are running down her face now. Music comes swelling back, now on the bridge.
Maze opens her eyes, exhales, takes her hand off the knob and slowly turns around to face Eve, still in her arms. Eve looks up at her reverentially. Maze finally breaks down sobbing and her kneels buckle. Steadied by Eve, Maze slowly collapses until she’s kneeling. She throws her arms around Eve’s waist and buries her face in Eve’s stomach. Eve, relieved yet pained, gently rubs Maze’s back and head. As Maze sinks further until she’s basically sitting on her ankles, Eve kneels down herself. She kisses Maze’s head, then gently rests it on her shoulder and continues comforting her.
NO ONE:
EVE POLASTRI:
Even though they’re talking about Lucifer, I feel like this is actually one of the most telling moments for Eve & Maze… purely based on Eve’s body language.
She’s used to being objectified. She’s aware of the effect she has on people. She never really reacts to getting attention, unless it’s from Lucifer… or Maze. First, in 4x06, but on a deeper level in 4x08. Eve gets flustered because she knows that Maze actually means what she’s saying and is saying it because she truly cares about her. I think this is the moment Eve starts to realize that Maze actually cares about her more than anyone ever has.
Granted, it takes awhile to sink in, but I think part of it, aside from her being hung up on Lucifer, is that it catches her so off-guard. It’s hard for her to understand why anyone would care about her as much as Maze does because, ironically, Eve has very low self-esteem since her self-worth has always defined by her ability to be what other people want her to be.
I love how Eve and Maze are both party girls and haven’t officially gotten together yet, and yet the most truly intimate (i.e. coming from a place of vulnerability) things they’ve ever done, they did for and with each other
