10 things you should know if you are an R.D Fan

1. Bachpan se talented

As a child RD Burman played a vital role in creating music for, ‘Aye meri topi palat ke aa- Funtoosh (1956) and ‘Sar jo tera chakraaye- Pyaasa (1957)’ 

.  

2. Everything’s in the name

He was called, ‘Pancham’ because as a child, whenever he cried, it sounded in the fifth note (Pa) of the Indian musical scale. The word Pancham means five (or fifth) in Bengali. Another theory says he could cry in five different notes, so that’s why ‘Pancham’

3. Sapne mein Gaana, Ya Gaane mein Sapna

He used to get tunes in his dreams and on the advice of his father, began getting up as soon as he "dreamt" of a tune and wrote it down. Songs such as "Mera naam hai Shabnam", "Kanchi re kacnhi re" had come to him in his sleep.

        4. RD never off duty 

He used to create music wherever possible. Musafir hoon yaaron’ song was created by R.D Burman while taking a shower. 'Ghar aaja Ghir Aaye Badra' was created by R.D while driving a car.

5. Fusion Guru

He was the first to introduce the Brazilian bossa nova rhythm in Hindi film music - the song was "Maar dalega dard-e-jigar", sung by Asha Bhosle, in "Pati Patni".

6. Magical Trio

Rajesh Khanna-R.D.Burman-Kishore Kumar worked together in 32 films.

7. Doston Ke Dost

RD’s closest friends were Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, Gulzar, Kishore Kumar and Gulshan Bawra.

8. Heere ki parakh sirf johri hi janta hai

Shabbir  Kumar, Amit Kumar, Kumar Sanu, Abhijeet, Mohammed Aziz & Hariharan were given recognition & given first breaks by R D Burman

9. Sand Papers, Soda Bottles, Bamboo Sticks were his instruments

He created different musical sounds produced from methods such as rubbing sand paper and knocking bamboo sticks together, Patting on back, blowing into beer bottles, cups and saucers to create the tinkling. He even made the singer Annette Pinto gargle to produce a background sound for the Evil look-alike ‘Babu’

10. Stamped

A postage stamp, bearing RD Burman's face, was released by Indian Post to honor him on 3 May 2013.
