How he came to be here with Haymitch Abernathy is anybody's guess. Clerk Carmine has never particularly hidden his feelings about the boy, indeed it had been rather a source of contention in their little home more than a few times. There's a little part of his brain too that whispers that he was right all along, that if Lenore Dove had simply kept away from the Abernathy boy, she might still be with them. God, he's so tired of burying family. Covey girls, it seems, are cursed. To be lost due to the actions of a man, to be lost far too young, leaving a wave of grief behind them. First Lucy Gray, then Maude Ivory, then fierce Lenore Dove.
There's a part of him that wants to scream and shout, to cuff Haymitch around the ear for his part in this all. And yet...yet, at the same time, there's a little part of him that fears it might always have ended this way, regardless of Abernathy. Lenore Dove had always been rebellious, and he and Tam Amber had begged forgiveness more than a few times for her misdeeds. So instead of saying anything, Clerk Carmine sighs softly, before pulling out a bottle of his own.
