Patang is Pangasinanse for frog, but this particular species is Brown & Alcala's Sierra Madre Frog or Sanguirana tipanan!
There are more than 100 species of amphibians in the Philippines, with at least 80% of them found #OnlyinthePhilippines, aka they’re endemic (AM Fuiten, et al., 2011).
The species name tipanan means covenant or partnership, and is reference to the 45-year collaboration between Angel Alcala and Walter Brown, who together co-authored more than 70 publications including those about Philippine amphibians and reptiles.
Since it’s Arbor Day, if you are planting trees or donating to plant trees, it may one day be home to one or many Sierra Madre Frogs species.
