“Another compilation album from Messrs Morrissey, Marr, Rourke and Joyce. This was released in 1987 and is essentially a collection of their singles and B sides between 1985 to 1987. In the same year the almost identical comp Louder Than Bombs was also released for the US market, and both came hot on the heels of The Queen Is Dead, presumably intended to show everyone what nuggets of indie pop perfection they’d missed once TQID had finally brought them some chart success. Indeed The Smiths we’re riding high by then in the British charts at least with this album reaching no 2 and staying in the charts for 15 weeks. . All the usual suspects are here, but it was for the B sides I bought it, since I don’t (gasp!) actually own any Smiths singles myself. In fact I came to them relatively late (see recent Strangeways review) having spent most of 1985/6 listening to Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Prince. . Asleep is one of the highlights on here and demonstrates the mastery of the Morrissey/Marr combo. It’s pure loveliness. Listening to this comp again I was most struck by Kirsty MacColl’s backing vocals on Ask, she really elevates the song to a different level. It also features some of Morrissey’s best lyrics: “Because if it’s not love then it’s the bomb, the bomb…the bomb that will bring us together.” . I just renamed my hetero friends’ WhatsApp group “Is The Rectum a Grave?”; they are confused now.
