How about how underappreciated mags is by both the fandom and the crew

oh you’ve hit the worst topic. read more because it is so much already. 

tl;dr no one likes mags because he has OCD and isn’t immediately relatable and it Sucks, because mags is such a blessed character. he tries very hard. please clap

for starters, the crew doesn’t appreciate mags because they think mags is a fun ruining jackass that is only on the ship because 1. optimus didn’t trust the ADHD twink to manage things on his own, and 2. because drift. when it’s not either of those, no one likes mags because “[OCD behavior] is not fun and boring and annoying”. when in reality, mags just wants people to be kept safe and happy, so he imposes/enforces weird rules. at hedonia, he couldn’t stop looking for a fire exit because if something isn’t accounted for, he can’t even try to relax, much less let other people relax. he writes his 50,000 word reports about ship safety because he has to have everything accounted for and fixed, otherwise he’s toying with probability and he’s not a man of chance. he has to be 100% sure about what he’s doing, with 50 backup plans, otherwise he won’t commit. most of the time.

the fandom doesn’t like mags because he requires more than a surface level reading to understand, and because mental illnesses like OCD aren’t taken seriously because it’s like psychosis, ie “weird behavior and paranoia about safety”. he’s not open about his feelings, therefore you can’t actually glean his emotional state from what he says. he’s tricky to read, and most people don’t want to read that deep into him, when it kinda requires it!

plus, i think rodimus is more relatable and likable than magnus is to most MTMTE readers. rodimus is active in his job, he’s a down to earth leader, he’s bold, charismatic (kinda egocentric), emotional, and fun... and then there’s magnus, who works in the shadows, just out the limelight, making sure everything runs correctly. magnus is more logical, pragmatic, Won’t Start Fights But Will Definitely End Them kind of bot. he’s the mom friend in every group that prevents everyone from doing something that’ll send them to the ER, and everyone is kinda pissy at them for a while. except mags’ mom friend instinct went slightly haywire and he panics over everything because Everything Happens So Much And I Am Afraid

but magnus’ personality isn’t just OCD. sure, it constitutes a lot of it, but he has traits outside of it. he’s clearly empathetic and good at being comforting, considering cyclonus opened up to him about tailgate. even if magnus couldn’t lend advice, he’s obviously a good shoulder to cry on. he does try to relate to the crew, given that he goes on the hedonia shore leave and tries to talk to swerve and tailgate, and that he tries to make jokes. but given that he doesn’t really talk a lot, and he delivers his jokes like one delivers the nuclear codes, it doesn’t pan out, so he stays rather asocial. he’s a fast thinker, but also really good at defusing situations. he wants other people to realize his hard work and respect him, which is why at mederi, magnus’ only condition for ascendance was his brother telling him he’s “so very proud” and why he gets really excited over the prospect of rodimus calling him first. he appreciated megatron’s “noted, with thanks” because historically, rodimus has usually left them ignored

so someone reading his reports and thanking him for it is huge. and despite his seeming indifferent attitude towards the crew, he does care about them.

evidenced by the fact that magnus almost died taking on overlord (which everyone seems to forget COUGH COUGH), even though magnus definitely knew overlord was dangerous. his dialogue with overlord is that of regret: “i’ve got a list of regrets. ... i should’ve gone to garrus-9 with the wreckers. i should’ve sorted you out then. i’ve often wondered if things would’ve played out differently had i been there. guess now i know.” to me, this means mags knew he would die, and still chose to do so to buy time for the rest of his crew.

plus he’s just a pretty boy. you can’t really deny he got blessed in the looks department by primus
