Small-eyed sphinx (Paonias myops), Fishers Island NY, July 2018.
Bearing the appearance of dead leaves on the outside, the hidden hindwings sport beautiful eyespots that earn this moth its namesake. The scalloping of the wing is characteristic to its genus, of which there are only three representatives north of Mexico. As caterpillars, these species feed on trees within the rose family, such as cherries and hawthorns, but can be found on birch and willow outside of the Mid-Atlantic. The adults, however, do not feed, as their purpose is only to seek out a mate and continue the population.
Two generations in the Mid-Atlantic, with adults flying as early as mid-to-late spring and again mid summer. Immatures overwinter as pupae.
