Candy had bags under his eyes but seemed more awake than he had been in a while. He didn’t scoop her into a hug but instead leaned down and hugged her tightly, though he was careful not to hurt her. After a little while, he unwrapped his arms and leaned back up.

“My little cherry pie…” He smiled, seeming to be afraid to let her go. “How’ve you been?”

“Okay,” she answered honestly, if not a little soft. “I missed you,” the girl added, and looked at Candice. “And you, too. I missed you both.”
