Papon is all set to Judge Maruti Suzuki Colors of Youth

Each one of us is heavenly gifted in a unique way and it is this innate ability or aptitude that makes you stand apart from others by making you more confident, successful and happy. Your talents also help you uncover the important objects of life while making you feel in all affairs that you deal with, on a daily basis. To be precise, God-given abilities, aptitudes or talents that you possess, make the greatest difference in your life, providing you acknowledge them and try to extract the most out of them for yourself as well as for others.

Today, there are various platforms- big and small- that greatly help the youth in getting the exposure and recognition they deserve. As you would perhaps be aware, “Colors of Youth”– one such unique path breaking initiative by Maruti Suzuki, is a National College Challenge in which students from top colleges across India match their wits against each other to showcase their versatile personality and well-rounded talent. As the name itself suggests, the event aims at tapping the various colours (talents) the millennials have and extends a platform to them in order to showcase their hidden qualities and creative genius before the world.

The talent in this show ranges from singing, music, dancing, rapping, stand-up comedy, beatboxing, speed painting, car graphics, technological innovation, etc. The show, currently in its 8th season, has risen in popularity and success with every new season, thus becoming a much sought-after platform for students who are raring to showcase their potential & versatility. The event, in its previous 7 seasons, witnessed a coveted panel of judges who happen to be the very best in the industry- Diana Hayden, Benny Dayal, Lauren Gotlieb, and Nikhil Chinappa- to name a few. Colors of Youth- season 8 is poised to be bigger and better than ever before with the enigmatic Papon, the versatile Monali Thakur, the beautiful Loren Gotlieb and the very charming Salman Yusuf as the mentors who would be judging the contestants on their creative talent.

Papon has been known to be a promoter of fresh talent for years now. He has set an excellent example in the independent music scene with absolutely no backing and pure hard work that got him where he is today. The singer, who himself rose to fame through a singing reality show- Coke Studio, strongly believes that each one of us needs that certain push in life to get out of our comfort zone and show the world what we really have, especially the youth. He is an active supporter of talent shows according to him, each one of us possesses at least one special talent that is different from everybody else. Papon believes that ‘MS Colors of Youth’ is one platform where the bar of talent is only being raised with time. Hence, on being approached by the channel, he readily accepted the opportunity of becoming a judge on the show.

We really hope there are more people like Papon in the industry because ‘a chance’ is the only thing many people seek but never end up getting. Kudos to this man!

Papon’s Performance at the 11th Teacher’s Achievement Awards

In the entertainment industry, there’s a reason why award functions are so important. For all forms of media, awards serve an important role, both in discovery for watchers, listeners, and readers, and to push creators and companies to create and finance more prestige content. This helps to promote a better quality of media and ultimately make our world a much more interesting one to live in. Because without good and accessible stories — what do we really have?

In February 2012, all roads in Delhi led to the ITC Maurya as Beam Inc celebrated the spirit of achievement with the 11th Teacher's Achievement Awards (TAA). The evening commemorated the start of the second decade of the one of the most prestigious, respected and admired Teacher's Achievement Awards by welcoming into its fold the finest achievers from the fields of Business, Entertainment, Sports and Communication.

The main highlight of the evening, however, was the grand finale wherein one of the most popular singers of today's times- Angaraag Mahanta aka Papon- performed a ‘jugalbandi' alongside other renowned singers such as Anoushka Shankar, Medieval Punditz, and Karsh Kale. The performance also saw past winners, jury members and key stakeholders of the Teacher's Achievement Awards join the celebrations. Over the years, Papon has been known for his soulful voice that touches every single person’s soul deeply. At this event too, his 10-minute long performance managed to sway one and all with its magic.

According to various onlookers present at the event, the semi-classical performance had them engaged throughout and people got so lost in Papon jamming to the tunes and beautiful combination of the various musical instruments, that they didn’t want it to end at all. Papon’s knowledge of classical music and his strong folk background is easily reflected in each of his performances and people absolutely love the fact that he experiments with his voice to produce fresh music. His folk electronica songs have been a hit among the younger generations ever since he stepped in the industry and he has, what can be called, ‘redefined’ folk music.

Papon has always been known as a risk-taker. He is someone who has never really feared the outcome but tried to experiment and bring out the best he can offer. He has been extremely versatile with his choice of songs too- be it ‘jiyein kyun’ which falls under the ‘soft rock’ category, or ‘moh ke dhaage’ which is a classical number- he has managed to bring something new to the table, every single time.

We adore Papon not only for his out-of-the-box sense in music but also for his subtle personality. He is one of those rare people today that spread happiness everywhere they go. We are definitely fallen head-over-heels for him, how about you?

Papon at Rongali Bihu Festival 2019

India is the most diverse nation in the world. The cultural diversity greatly changes with the landscape and every few kilometres you’ll come across a new settlement or tribe with different practices and customs from the previous one. The north-eastern part of India alone comprises of eight states- with Guwahati being the largest city. The northeast is a land of undulating hills and plains with a luxuriant green cover and a huge variety of both- rare and exotic flora and fauna. It also has a rich cultural diversity.

What makes this region so enchanting is the fact that it has remained largely untouched. Not only are its natural wonders undiscovered by most of India, but its music too has remained largely unnoticed by mainstream audiences. The unique style of folk and classical music of this region makes it one of the most valuable assets for the Indian music industry. On the other hand, other genres of music such as rock music, soft rock and, roll and rock pop are also practiced in abundance here with the rock bands being rich in various styles. Shillong, which happens to be a small town in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya, is known as the Rock Capital of India for its excellent rock bands and the extremely famous Hornbill National Rock Concert. Not only are these bands famous across the nation but they are popular internationally too.

The north-east has also given India some excellent singing talent such as Angaraag Mahanta, commonly known as ‘Papon’. Being Assam’s iconic contemporary artist, singer-songwriter, Papon recently attended the Rongali Bihu Festival in Assam which is celebrated to mark the beginning of the New Year. It is the biggest festival of the state. Papon performed at the fifth edition Rongali in 2019 amidst loud cheers from his fans. Papon has taken folk and classical music to a world stage today and is striving harder each day to get his region the recognition it deserves.

Born and raised in the city that produced legends like Bhupen Hazarika, Papon feels Guwahati has all that it takes to be on the forefront to represent the rich culture and tradition of music from the vast north-eastern region of India. While performing at the festival, he said that almost every city in our country organizes or hosts music festivals on a large scale which get them worldwide recognition but Assam has got no such privilege yet. Addressing the audience, he further said,” It is always a pleasure performing on my home ground. But I am amazed, despite us having a rich musical heritage, why don’t we have a music fest dedicated to various domestic and international bands? We really need to pull up our socks and work hard in order to make Guwahati the music capital.”

Papon urged that Assam achieve its prominence at a global level since he strongly believes in the talent it stores and wishes to see it at the international level. He also said that he holds the Rongali festival really close to his heart as it is a hub of talent and simply meeting or interacting with such talent is an absolute privilege for him.
