Benedict XVI modified voting rules for Conclave

An interview with canon lawyer Kurt Martens on yesterday's De Standaard notes that B16 declared that someone *must* get two-thirds of the Conclave's votes to become Pope. Previously, there was apparently an option, that if a Conclave went on too long in a deadlock, that the requirement could be reduced to a simple majority. This is no longer so.

Toen het Italiaanse persbureau Ansa gisteren om 11.46 uur het bericht de wereld instuurde dat paus Benedictus in een toespraak aan de kardinalen zijn ontslag had aangekondigd, stond de wereld even stil. Een paus di zich voortijdig terugtrek, komt niet alle dagen voor. Het was geleden van 1415, toen paus Gregorius XII was teruggetreden. Maar de deed dat om een einde te maken aan het grote schisma binnen de Kerk, inclusief tegenpausen. Dat Ansa-journaliste Giovanna Chirri de primeur had, dante ze aan haar kennis van het Latijn. Benedictus had de kardinalen in het Latijn toegesproken en zij had als enige journaliste verstaan dat hij zei 'dat hij niet langer de kracht had om de Kerk te leiden en dat hij daarom van plan was om te stoppen'.
