I have a lot of feelings about Hector as the sole survivor. I have a lot of feelings about Hector in general, let's be real here, because I think he gets painted very one or two note in fandom when he's so multilayered. But the idea of him having a little family and being a one man army on the warpath just fills me with feels. Like, he had mostly adapted completely to the modern world of Fallout; hell, he'd bought a robot, which when he was in his natural lifespan was a thing that wasn't even dreamed about yet.

FALLOUT 4 SPOILERS AGAIN

But he adapts to the wasteland, too, because on the whole, people aren't so different from people of his own natural time, and the situation isn't really all that different, except there's no oppressive empires. Just assholes in suits living in the stands of Diamond City and eccentric people like Cabot who's almost as old as Hector himself. He adapts, and his morals adapt with him, and the people he meets along the way have a lot of influence on how he changes as well. He doesn't much care for Preston's optimism, but Preston is trying to do better by everyone. He thinks the Railroad is too narrow in focus, but they're doing their own part in making sure synths are seen as people. Fuck the Brotherhood of Steel, he has issues with authority and Danse sounded like a robot, as far as he was concerned. And also heavily fuck the Institute with a pinecone, for what they did to his family. (God I could go on for ages about Hector's seething rage for the Institute and how they took the two bright spots in his life away from him, how they killed the woman he loved.) Like. Really, though, his character was made for it, which is why I'd like to flesh it out a little beyond just a playthrough. He has a lot to give to the Commonwealth, and the Commonwealth has a real chance to shape part of his personality.

🌟: Do they consider themselves a good person?I've talked about this in respect to canon Hector right here, and perhaps a bit too poetically, but since you're one of my Fallouts, let me talk about it in regards to Sole Survivor Hector.All of that? Still applies. Hector that survives Vault 111 is still the same man, in the respect that, while he's lived through the years and piracy as he knew it died and he adapted as the world changed, he's still very much a true pirate at his core. What his Nora saw in him is anyone's guess, but she might have had an inkling of the fiercely protective man he can be when someone is his. She was apparently just the right type of woman to rope him in and keep him, because for someone who likes to roam and wander as much as he does, he was perfectly content to have her. In short, y'all, Hector Barbossa was in love, and he was feelin' it.THERE ARE FALLOUT 4 SPOILERS BELOW

But then that all ended and he was on his own again in a post-apocalyptic hellword. People mistook him for a soft vault dweller and got very surprised when the pirate is what bit back. He's still not a good person. He loved his little family, more than anything, and he was content and happy at that point. Would it have lasted? Who knows. But he was when the bombs dropped, and like everything in Hector's life, everything good he's ever had has been ripped away. A man with more of a conscience would think it's because of how wickedly his lives his life, and he deserves it, but Hector sees it as a wrong done to him. He can't go after who dropped the bombs, but he can go after who took his son.But along the way those old habits most definitely come up. He lies. He steals. He doesn't murder innocents, and he does his bit, especially with the Minutemen, because he's never really been one to help but literally almost everyone is scrabbling up from the bottom, and he knows how that feels. He'll go kill those ghouls, or super mutants, or whatever he needs to. He has no compunction on killing raiders, or anyone, really, if they shoot at him first. He's fucking ace with a sniper rifle, so he'll gladly sit on a rooftop and pick them off if need be, because he knows they'd slit his throat for the chems and caps he's carrying. He was made for the Wasteland, and Wasteland justice.And even when he gets to Nuka World, and kills Colter, and becomes Overboss, he's still a terrible person, who's an asshole and does terrible things, but there are lines he won't cross. The Disciples cross his lines with a thirst for violence. Like, Hector's rarely the aggressor. He'll kill, and he won't feel bad about it, but he's not a fight starter. The Operators keep slaves, when otherwise he could have seen eye to eye with them about being in it for the money. And the Pack are, as far as he's concerned, little better than animals, and if they wanted an alpha, they sure as fuck got one.So even Nuka World isn't spared from him, because he slaughters them from one end of the park to the other and sets the merchants free. And when it's done, his intention is to turn it over to the Minutemen, because it'll make a hell of a fortified group of cities. So his morals have changed a little, in the sense that he's more willing to help out, more willing to put down what as can be interpreted as his own kind than to allow them to continue on. And a lot of that has to do with the fact that the Commonwealth is still struggling to get on its feet. If it was as established as, say, the Hub, he might have reacted differently. But the truth is, nobody has anything, except maybe Diamond City, and it seems highly unfair to take things from anyone but them when it would be entirely too easy, and would be just as bad as how he remembers how things were when he was a child.
