WHEN - the other night i can't remember what day
WHERE - Puck's dorm.
Puck wasn’t sure what possessed him to tell Kurt to come down to his room, but it was happening. He was still really confused about how he felt about everything, but all he knew was that being around Kurt made him feel good at not super stressed out and depressed like he was almost any other time. The other boy put him at ease, listened to his bull shit and didn’t judge him for it, and made him smile when he didn’t want to. He didn’t get it at all, but he wasn’t going to let someone like that slip away from him. He opened the door to his room and laid back down in his bed, aimlessly scrolling through his phone as he waited for Kurt.
Kurt had no idea what was going on. One moment he was innocently talking to Puck and tentatively making plans to hang out. The next, he was going to be laying in bed with Puck….? How? Why? Was this real life, or was he on laughing gas from a dentist visit? Upon finding out about his plans for the night, Kurt quickly gathered his homework and put it in the bottom shelf of the desk. When he was done with that, he opened his “ears’ case” and put in his hearing aids, then ran out the room. What was even going to happen tonight? Were they going to just lay in bed, or were they going to start dating? Did Puck even see him like that, or was laying in bed completely innocent to the slightly older (by six months!) guy? Would they regret laying in bed together? Kurt quickly brushed that idea out of his mind. It was just laying together. What was the worst that could happen? He was allowed to enjoy one moment to himself! Getting to the elevator, he pressed the down button, and as he waited he caught his reflection in the elevator doors. Oh god…he was wearing navy pajama bottoms with a black robe! Gross! That was not…no. Puck was totally going to judge his utter fashion don’t! The elevator doors opened immediately, as if they were only waiting for Kurt to realize how bad he looked, and Kurt got in and pressed the button to go to the first floor. It was now or never. He and Puck were going to lay in bed together, and Kurt couldn’t help the grin on his face regarding it. Maybe it would go really well, and they’d both admit having feelings for each other and would become some sort of amazing couple. Maybe Kurt could introduce Puck to his dad if his father came to visit for a weekend, or Puck could come back with him and Finn for a vacation sometime…When the door opened up again, Kurt got out and made his way to Puck’s dorm room. The fact it was open made things a lot easier, but after taking a few steps in Kurt realized he had forgotten to brush his teeth. He quickly put his hand up to his mouth and breathed, then smelled….alright, his breath was alright. “Hey” He said as he walked to Puck’s bed, tentative about if he should just get in bed with him or if they should have small talk first
Puck instantly set his phone down when he saw Kurt come through the door, smiling just at the sight of him. It was crazy how just being around him made him instantly feel better. “Hey,” he said to him, sliding over a little on his bed. Not that there was much room anyway. The bed was just a little larger than a twin, and Puck took up most of it. He hadn’t really thought about that when he invited Kurt down. He didn’t even know why he would invite someone to just ‘lay in bed’ with him. It seemed kind of weird now that he thought about it, but Kurt showed up, didn’t he? He must not have thought it was that strange. He patted the bed next to him. “Lay down.”
Kurt watched Puck set his phone down, and smiled. He had Puck’s full attention. That right there was promising…just him and Puck. God. This was way too good to be true. He saw Puck’s mouth move, but didn’t catch what was said. As Puck motioned for Kurt to lay down and spoke, Kurt caught the ‘lay, and the ‘ow’, and was able to fill in the rest. “Lay down” He repeated, signing it for Puck. He knew Puck would at least be able to remember ‘down’, since it was just pointing down. Furrowing his eyebrows, he spoke again to himself. “Lay down…” He couldn’t hear anything…had he really forgotten to turn on his hearing aids!? After reaching behind his ear and taking a second to turn the aid on, then repeating on the other side, he took off his slippers and joined Puck in bed. Unsure of what to say or do now, he just looked at Puck, unable to wipe the smile off his face
Puck kept his eyes on Kurt. It looked like he was trying to figure out what he was saying, but Puck didn’t think he could be any more clear, plus he was looking right at him. He raised an eyebrow, just watching him, and then trying his best to repeat the sign that Kurt was showing him. He did it a couple times before finally understanding, repeating it correctly again. But then he saw Kurt grabbing at his ears and it all started making sense. Puck propped himself up on his elbow, his chin resting in his hand as he looked at Kurt. That smile was really contagious, though Puck was doing his best to hold back a huge smile. “How are you?” he asked, looking right at Kurt’s face that was really only a few inches from him.
Kurt could tell Puck was trying not to smile, and it only made Kurt smile even more. “I’m good” Kurt responded. “What about you?” He wanted to get closer to Puck, snuggle up against him and talk with their eyes closed and their bodies pressed against each other. There were two issues with this though. The first was that, no, that was never going to happen and Kurt needed to stop dreaming. Puck wouldn’t want to do that with him. Ever. The second issue was that Kurt couldn’t talk to Puck if they did that. So he had to settle for just laying close to him instead.
Puck smiled at that, shrugging his shoulders lightly. “I’m pretty good. Bored, though. Thanks for hanging out,” he said, the smile finally creeping across his face. He didn’t really know what to do right now. His instinct was like it was any time he had someone in his bed. He wanted to like, touch Kurt (not in a weird way). He wanted to grab his hand or put his arm around him or something, but he was finally cool with Kurt again. He didn’t want him running out of there or something. He’d given him enough reasons to hate him since they met and he hadn’t yet, so he didn’t wanna screw this up.
Kurt sighed contently without realizing it, still staring at Puck. "Of course. Thanks for inviting me" Kurt responded before finally giving into his urges and cuddling against the other guy a little bit. He closed his eyes, relaxing and enjoying the moment. They did come to relax, after all, so Puck wouldn't find it weird. Would he?
Puck was a little bit surprised when Kurt suddenly was moving closer and nuzzling into him, but after the brief moment of shock, he was actually instantly at ease. This wasn't good at all. Any time he let himself get any sort of affectionate with anyone, it never ended well. But all he wanted to do right now was just hold him in relax, so he found himself giving in. He wrapped one of his arms around Kurt and pulled him in a little closer to him before closing his eyes.
Kurt continued to rest against Puck for several moments. It had been a long time since Kurt had felt this way with a person, but it felt comfortable and like they had done it before. He didnt allow himself to think about anything, or process his emotions. The only thing he did let himself feel was Puck's body against his. But slowly the thoughts crept up. What did this mean? What did Kurt mean to Puck? What did Puck mean to Kurt? Was this a one time thing? Did Puck expect to do more than cuddle? Did Puck know what he expected? How much did he like guys anyways, if he wasn't actually gay? Kurt sat up slowly so he was sitting on his legs, facing towards the headboard and looking at Puck. "We should probably talk about this" Kurt finally said
Puck couldn't remember the last time he felt so at ease. He always felt like he was going crazy, like his mind was moving at a ridiculous speed as a million thoughts ran through his head. He was starting to think that he was never going to be able to relax again. But laying here like this with Kurt finally let him feel peaceful and calm for the first time in.. well, years. He never wanted to move from right here. As they laid there, he let his arm run slowly along Kurt's back, and he was almost drifting off to sleep when suddenly Kurt was sitting up. Puck opened his eyes, brows furrowed in confusion as he watched him. "Talk about what?" he asked, still not moving from where he was laying down.
Kurt: "This" Kurt replied, looking down at Puck's sheets for a second before he looked back up. "What are we doing? I mean, I know we're laying in bed. But are we flirting? Or...what's going on? I'm kind of confused and I don't want to mess anything up"
Puck frowned slightly. He really didn't know the answer. He didn't know anything anymore. He slowly sat up, moving slightly so he could sit comfortably on the small bed and face Kurt. "I don't know," he admitted, bringing a hand up to scratch the back of his head. "I'm sorry, I.." He trailed off before running a hand over his face, keeping it there for a moment before dropping it to his side. "You won't mess anything up. What do you.. want it to be?"
Kurt watched Puck's lips closely, trying to make sure he understood everything that was being said. Puck wasn't making it clear if he wanted them to be flirting or if he was just looking for friendship, but he wanted Kurt to state what he was looking for. The only reassuring thing he'd said to Kurt at all was that he wouldn't mess anything up. But then, they had to think this through. "I'm not sure what I want is going to happen" Kurt admitted. "You're my brother's best friend."
Puck couldn't keep himself from chuckling a little at that, rolling his eyes. "I'm pretty sure I'm not," he said, thinking about how rough things had been between him and Finn. He was almost positive that Finn didn't see him as his best friend anymore. He sighed, trying to figure out what to say. He was never good at this whole 'being open about your feelings' shit, mainly because he rarely let himself get into this situation. "Look, I.. I don't know what I'm doing. I'm really bad at this shit. I'm sorry."
Kurt frowned slightly when Puck said he wasn't best friends with Finn anymore. Kurt knew what was going on, and he knew they just needed to talk. As Puck started talking again, Kurt didn't catch every word he said. "What are you apologizing for? You said you're bad at what?"
Puck hesitated at first, but then he faced Kurt again. He wasn't trying to be difficult, but he really didn't know what to do or say. "Everything," he finally said, shrugging his shoulders. It wasn't really the answer he was looking for, but it was still true.
Kurt: "Everything?" Kurt stared blankly at Puck, confused if that was even what the other boy had said. What was that supposed to mean? Did Puck think he was bad at everything or was he saying sorry for everything? How did any of that explain a single thing? "What do /you/ want out of this?"
Puck sighed again. "I don't know," he said as he looked over at Kurt, wishing they were still just laying there and not talking like they were before, because that felt so good and calming and now he was just starting to get stressed out again. "I like hanging out with you. You're like, the only person that I even like being around anymore."
Kurt swallowed hard. He was good at reading body language. Like, really good at it. He had to be in order to understand tone when people were talking. But he couldn't understand what Puck was thinking or trying to convey at that exact moment. He wasn't quite sure Puck knew either. On one hand, Puck liked to be around him (the fact he was the only person Puck liked being around wasn't so good and was something they'd need to address later, though). But on the other hand, that sounded more like friends than a couple. "Oh...I see" Kurt nodded, waiting to see if Puck said anything else or not
Puck knew that if he opened up to Kurt even more, if they tried to date or anything, that Puck would just end up hurting him. That's pretty much the only thing that Puck was ever good at, making people upset and ruining lives and fucking everything up. The last time he had felt anything like this was with Quinn, and that all went to shit years ago, but it was still lingering in the back of his mind. He wondered if it would ever go away. He obviously knew he couldn't knock Kurt up, and that's not something he'd have to deal with here, but he was sure he could find some other way to fuck up. He paused for a moment, looking down at his hands. He'd been trying to learn some sign language basics, but he still wasn't exactly sure of what to do or if he was doing it right. "You make me really.. happy.." He said, looking back down at his hands as he did the sign for happy.
Kurt wasn't sure what was going on in Puck's mind. He didnt seem like he wanted to talk any longer, and Kurt felt very hurt about everything. What was he supposed to do now? Continue cuddling and act like nothing had happened? Go back to his room? What? He didn't want to mess up their friendship if Puck didnt feel the same way. Puck began talking again, and paused before getting to an important word. What did Kurt make him? He began moving his hand, which totally distracted Kurt from his lips, and it took him a second to register what Puck was doing. He had learned the sign for 'happy'. A large smile lit up on Kurt's face and he leaned in to kiss Puck. Once he pulled back he began speaking and signing, rephrasing what Puck had said slightly since he didnt know how to sign 'make'. "I feel happy with you, too"
Puck was still looking down at his hands, making sure he had done the sign right, but obviously he had because suddenly Kurt was smiling and kissing him and then Puck felt like his heart was going to burst or something. He watched as Kurt signed something else, watching him closely and listening to what he said. His smile grew even wider when Kurt said that Puck made him happy, and he stopped for a second to think of other signs he had learned. "I like you," Puck said as he did the appropriate sign, pausing for another moment before going on. "A lot." He made the simple gesture for the word before dropping his hands, staring back over at Kurt again.
Kurt was still grinning, adjusting himself so that he was laying with his head on Puck's pillow again. "I like you, too" He repeated as he tried to think of more signs, but he really didnt know that much and not everything could be applied to relationships. There was a lot they needed to talk about, of course, but that didnt all need to be worked out right this second. They could enjoy this moment for a few minutes first.
Puck all but let out a sigh of relief when Kurt laid down next to him again. He had taught himself phrases he might need with Kurt, and even though he didn't think he'd end up saying that shit to him so soon, he was glad that he had learned them. He smiled and laid back down with Kurt, wrapping an arm around him again and just relaxing.
