ANDREI | (Hoo Boy) @dcarhcarts (for Natasha)
The metro car had emptied out, leaving only Andrei and her, and Andrei had already glazed his eyes, his mouth in a thin line. From where he stood, holding onto the rail as the car lurched forward, he could almost avoid seeing her, except for flashes out of the corner of his eye. He should’ve left Moscow for good. He would have, except that Marya had asked him to come back when their father had his stroke, and Andrei wasn’t so callous as to refuse.
He had been on his way back to the hospital now when he’d seen her across the car. Despite there now being plenty of empty seats and a ways to go until his stop, he didn’t take a seat, the monotonous clunking of the train and the voice overhead announcing the stops the only sound. But still, Andrei was aware of her as if she shone.
The metro entered a tunnel, and then suddenly the train heaved itself to a stop, causing Andrei to stumble and catch himself hard with the rail, his knuckles white, almost dropping the bag Masha had asked him to bring. Andrei winced and looked out the window at the cement tunnel, and it was then that the lights of the train flickered and went dark. Twisting to peer behind him in the sudden darkness, Andrei squinted his eyes as he tried to see if Natasha had also been thrown in the sudden stop. “Natalia?” he asked into the blackness, his tone neutrally sharp. “Are you all right?”
