JAKE
When Jake first heard the news, he didn’t want to believe it. No one wants to hear that their Saturday was going to be spent cleaning up after a bunch of losers who thought it would be funny to pull a prank that wasn’t even that good, least of all someone who has honestly and truly been doing his best to do what he was supposed to do. To put it mildly, his life sucked. There was just no winning for Jake Puckerman. Things just got better when Sue told him exactly who he’d be spending his time with: Ryder Lynn and Sebastian Smythe. Laughing was probably the worst thing to do in the moment but after hearing his best friend’s name along with Sebastian’s, it was all that came out. The universe was out to get him and there was nothing he could do about it. With a new detention to look forward to, Jake made sure to leave it on the counter for his mom to find right beside a note explaining why on his way out of the house.
While things between him and Ryder were on a downward spiral, Jake still considered him to be the closest thing he had to a brother other than Puck so he didn’t feel too weird going to pick him up. They were already losing the better part of their weekend so he figured the least he could do was offer Lynn a ride to hell and maybe use the time they had to apologize for being such a dick all the time. It was really awkward but it didn’t take long for the two to go back to a somewhat normal level for them.
They weren’t early by any means, in fact, there were already a handful of students making their way from their cars to wherever they needed to be; Jake just didn’t expect to see Sebastian Smythe standing out front already. As if hit with a bucket of ice, Jake’s entire demeanor changed. He stopped laughing and made it his main priority to get as far away from Ryder as possible. Shoving his hands in his pockets and keeping his eyes glued to the pavement, he blatantly ignored his best friend and sped over to Sebastian.
At the Delta house, Teddy had made sure that he looked as sharp as he could be - even at church, a Delta Omega Chi member had to look the best that they could, so he wore an off-white button up with light blue pin-striping and a pair of dark jeans - and after making sure that everything looked right and he didn’t have his clothes on backwards, he headed out of the home and drove the distance to the nearby church. It was large, the crowd one that someone could easily get lost in, but as the congregation rose to their feet to sing their hymns, he glanced around, looking for Ryder - just in case he wanted to cancel.
He wouldn’t have blamed him - they had talked about doing this for awhile and only now just got the chance to make it happen - but when his eyes found his, he gave him a nod in greeting. The rest of the service went on as planned, and Teddy walked out of the church and leaned against the brick wall near the double doors, pulling out his phone. Texting Ryder, he made sure that the fellow Longhorn knew that he was waiting for him, and he slid his phone back into his pocket as he waited.
When Ryder had somewhat invited him round, Mason had immediately started to get himself ready. It had been his weekend off, so he’d spent the day lounging about until Ryder had text him. He’d quickly showered and dried himself off before he’d dressed in a graphic tank top, with cut outs that ran from his shoulders to the bottom of his ribs, and a pair of shorts after agreeing to help cut Ryder’s hair. He had a pair of scissors and a razor in his bathroom which he packed in a washbag before packing a few bottles that had been lurking in his fridge door for a while.
He knocked gently on the door and waited for Ryder to open the door and let him in, and when he did just that Mason’s eyes lit up at the sight of the male in front of him and he smirked as he walked into his apartment. His fingers were tangled in the straps of his rucksack as he walked past Ryder, “What’s up, hot-stuff?” he asked, kicking off his shoes and moving them by the door.
He knocked on the door, rubbing his temples and covering his tired eyes with his arm before he took a sharp intake of breath, squared off his shoulders and wet his lips.
Why are you stood here, Mason? he asked himself, his eyes rolling around in his skull in an over-dramatised eye roll at himself, Because you can and why not?
Truth be told, flying made him lightheaded and after having only just got back from his week away from the Island, Mason was both restless and a little giddy. This, turning up at Ryder’s door still in the clothes that he’d travelled in, had been his first idea after having dumped his suitcase in his room.
Mason waited by the door, a hand resting on the doorframe and his body leaning against it, until he watched it open. He grinned and gave the guy opening the door a wink, “Hey hot-stuff”
It’d been a couple of months since Mason had been out on a date…an actual date that is. But he wasn’t particularly nervous, Ryder was a nice guy and he was easy to talk to, so for Mason there was no pressure weighing on his shoulders; for him this was just a casual date. A way for him to get to know Ryder a bit more, while eating away his New Year Resolutions. He’d dressed casually, with a simple button down shirt – making sure the top two buttons were left undone – and a pair of skinny pants with a denim jacket.
They’d arranged to meet at Pizza Galore at seven, so Mason made sure he arrived a quarter of an hour earlier, taking their table and resting his jacket on the back of his chair and sitting down. He texted Ryder to let him know that he was at the restaurant, before ordering a glass of water. Now he was a little nervous, twiddling his thumbs, as he eyed up the front door of the restaurant while he bit down on his lip a little.
Once he’d spotted Ryder, he stood up, pushing back his chair and leaning slightly against the edge of the table and waved over to him with a small smile on his face.
GENERAL NOTES→Kitty and Ryder go to the friend's date where some unexpected things find out.
Ryder looked in the mirror and bit his bottom lip. He looked good… enough… He fixed his hair a little more to the left and looked at himself again. This had to be right. Ryder never had much luck with women, especially hot, very attractive cheerio’s. He picked out a simple orange shirt and a pair of jeans and got ready to meet Kitty. He still had no idea how he was going to meet her, he wasn’t old enough to drive just yet… Maybe if he begged his mom he could get her to drop him off then he could walk with her to Breadstix… Or maybe a taxi… After much convincing his mom agreed, he didn’t tell her who she was or the fact it was a she, but finally, with two minuets to go until 8, Ryder knocked on her door.
Kitty long pondered if she should dress somehow special, but decided that in the end this was just a meeting of two friends so she stayed in cheerio costume. Besides there’re a lot of extra eyes in breadstix and the fact that Ryder would sat in the evening together with one of the most popular cheerios of McKinley definitely would benefit his reputation. She did not understand from his messages if they go by car or by feet, but in any case prepared jacket if it would be cold when they’d go back. She lined up her eyes and fixed her hair when she heard a knock at the door, being glad that the parents weren’t at home and she did not get a million questions about Ryder, which she did not know how to answer even to herself. ”Hey Ryder“, she opened the door and noticed that he was without a car, quickly ask him to wait one second and reached for her jacket.
Ryder gave a boyish grin as the door opened. She looked amazing as usually but all the same, she hadn’t put much effort into this. This was clearly a friends date, he wasn’t going to lie, this disappointed him but still, it would do him a lot of favors. “Hey Kitty, you look great, ready to go? I can’t exactly drive yet and it’s like a ten minuet walk so… thought, screw it let’s walk.” He smiled hopelessly. Dammit, he knew he should have a car or at least invest in lessons.
Kitty looked up at him after locking the door and said teasingly “You’re not so bad yourself… I don’t mind walking, but for the future, you could just ask - I have a car. Another thing is that driving to breadstix makes no sense”. She knew how absurd they look walking together, he was almost a foot taller than her and almost twice as wide. But she was not lying that she appreciated what he looks like - his broad shoulders and inflated arms, clearly expressed jawline, thick hair and big brown eyes that could help him get any girl and it was a mystery why he was unlucky with girls. ”So, how’s football? ” said Kitty and smiled, having chosen the most safe topic of conversation.
Ryder walked with her smiling as she spoke. It was nice to be with someone again. Being at McKinley Ryder hadn’t made too many friends just yet, everyone saw him as a threat, his body and looks were intimidating to other boys. He never wanted to seem that way but with every other guy ignoring him it was making him cagey. When it came to the subject of football he smiled and gave a small nod. “Football’s good, the guys on the team not so much but… I’m a shoe in for the team… I hope…”
Kitty walked beside him, constantly raising her head to look at him as they walked to breadstix, which thankfully was not far away from her home. “Talk to Finn, I’m serious…. You’re actually like a mini-copy of him, I think you will find a common language. He’s quarterback, drummer and a nice guy. But I’ll have to kill you if you tell him what I said it.” They went into breadstix, choosing at a table for two and Kitty knew that from the outside it definitely looked like a date. She waited until waiter brings the menu and opened it, choosing something special.
Ryder knew who Finn was, he seemed like an okay guy but he’d doubt he’d talk to him. As they walked into the building Ryder looked around for a familiar face and only saw a few guys in his math class and one cheerio who seemed to be doing the Lady and the Tramp move with her nose… Which was very odd… He sat down next to Kitty and picked up the menu only to find another language. Everything looked Italian or French, nothing seemed English. He licked his lips and squinted at the text. Ryder looked around the restaurant at what other people were eating, maybe he could ask for something that they had… He couldn’t admit he couldn’t understand that menu, Kitty would think he was stupid…
Kitty rose on her tiptoes and whispered in his ear with her lower voice “Of course it’s up to you but I thought you said that you want to see more of me”. Kitty didn’t really care about who was around but noticed Brittany sitting alone and slightly waved to her. She decided to choose pasta and ice cream with fruits but she was wondering about his choice. “What do you wanna order? Let me guess, something like six line?” She noticed that he was a little worried and looked around the breadstix like waiting to see someone, which was extremely strange – Kitty get used to have all attention on her only.
Ryder counted the lines and found the sixth one. He ran his finger along the line. ‘lihujbvasteamka’ Ryder frowned as he read the word again and again… Nothing, the word didn’t make sense, was it even English? He closed the menu and looked around once more, someone was eating pasta, another lasagna, nothing he liked. He bit his bottom lip and opened the menu again. Come on Ryder, there has to be something….
Kitty thought it would be just a good joke. She chose the most girl-ish item in menu, basically asking Ryder if he would decide to choose greens salad over steaks. She noticed that he tried to read with finger, being really confused about it. Last time she saw something like that was in…like second grade when everyone was learning to read. She watched over him closing and opening the menu again, looking at him with a question in her eyes. “Ryder, is everything okay?”
Ryder looked up and smiled with a small nod. “Everything’s fine yeah I’m just torn between the…” He bit his lip and sighed. “I’m torn between the steak and the um lasagna…” He smiled softly and then looked down at the menu. He could just go safe with a salad, this place had to serve salad surely… It was the most common restaurant food. He shut his menu one last time and smiled at Kitty. “I think a Caesar Salad would be awesome, I’m not too hungry…”
Kitty looked to the side “Well firstly, I will look like one of these fat cows, if I have a huge plate of pasta while you’ll be eating salad. Second - only jerks eat before a date with a girl, “and quickly corrected herself,” a friends date with a girl”. She looked up as he closed the menu and smiled, saying with confusion “There is no Caesar salad… you’re acting really weird. Tell me what the fuck is going on here … tell the truth, or I’ll go home”
Ryder gritted his teeth and looked down. How could he tell her? She’d think he was stupid, they’d only been in the restaurant ten minuets and she was already saying she wanted to leave. His gift with women never failed to amaze him. Ryder looked around and frowned. He opened up the menu again and pointed to a random dish. “That’s what I meant.”
Kitty looked at him disappointed, “you pointed at mac n cheese…Listen, I could get up and leave, but I’m here. And I didn’t leave after you almost dumped me when we’ve just met, twice to be honest”. She took his hand and looked at him,” Listen, you can tell me. You’re pushing me away and I’m still here, don’t you think I deserve to know the truth? ” Waitress came and Kitty ordered pasta for her and steak for him, showing him that she stayed in any case.
Ryder looked at their hands and then at Kitty. He bit his lip and started to breath heavily. He opened the menu and pushed it towards her. “I can’t read… Or write that well… I’m stupid, I try hard but I don’t learn, it’s something I’ve always struggled with and it gets me every damn day… You’re meant to know how to read and write when you start school but I can’t even read a stupid menu.” He was starting to get emotional now, he looked away and took a few deep breaths. “I don’t blame you for walking away, why would you want to be friends with an idiot?”
Kitty pronounced only “wow…” She didn’t know what she was waiting for to hear when asked, but she definitely did not expect to hear this from 16years old guy. On the other hand, she knew like no one else what it is to hide something from everyone and to go through something all alone, feeling that nobody understands you. She looked at him and squeezed his hand tighter. “I’m sorry, but …” she paused and continued after sighing “…I’m not leaving … and I actually don’t think you’re an idiot. I mentioned lots of mistakes in your texts, but I don’t really care.” She watched around, checking people from McKinley who could see how they sit together with holding hands, not that she was really care about anyone’s opinion. ” Did you try to check in the center of special education? Maybe there’s any reason for this?” She pulled her hand away when the waitress brought the dish, ordering the drink and started the meal, smiling at him “I wasn’t sure before, but now it’s totally not a date”.
Ryder didn’t say much he just sat there staring at his hands. He was overcome with slight relief but also an anger that brood inside him. This wasn’t easy, what would everyone one think? They might not care but he cares because he knew they’d be secretly thinking about him differently. Secretly wondering what he was still doing in school He looked up when the food came and smile slightly. He looked around and didn’t feel into this night. “A special center? Really?” He ‘asked’ and shook his head starting on his meal.
Kitty welling pasta on a fork, looking at him, “Why not? It’s just one test and you will know whether there is a reason that it’s so or not. Anything is better than doing nothing, unless there is a cause- all remain just as it is, does not become worse… But imagine if there is a reason, then you can fix your grades, I’m sure your mean parents that don’t allow to text me at night, will be more loyal. Another thing, if you are too chicken to take the test and find out the truth.” Sipping from a drink, which was brought, she looked at him, indicating that there was nothing to fear.
Ryder “And what if all these smart people think wow, this kid is really dumb… What if I’m just stupid?” He said with anger. He looked around again trying to keep his cool. He took a sip of his drink and actually started on his food. He had never thought of there being a solution, he thought he was just cursed with this… He could go to a center… “I mean… What if… What if there is something… People will look at me differently…”
Kitty grinned, “As A student, I think I can answer for smart people - we are too smart to judge other people. If you’re just stupid - I will still communicate with you and maybe I’ll be helping you with homework, unless of course you’ll talk to me nice, not like today». She moved her chair closer to the table and waved the waitress to order another drink “Then screw them … you know people are too busy thinking about what others think of them, to think about the others… Think about it. If there is something - that you just can fix it, it will just mean that your brain works a little differently. You love superheroes, right? Each of them has its own peculiarity and now studying is your kryptonite, but if there is some sort of a reason - it will be what makes you special,” she smiled, rolling eyes at herself feeling that she’s speaking like an Oprah.
Ryder sighed and looked at her. He shook his head and sighed. “Can I be honest? You are my only friend… I’ve not made a single friend yet and the fact you’re giving me this support is pretty awesome…” Ryder checked over his shoulder and leant forward. He took her hand and looked at her sternly. “But Kitty, I’m not gay. I’m totally into girls.”
Kitty looked aside ” well, I’m not the monster I was when I came to this school. I still have my attitude and snarky comments, but I think that I don’t see any reason to destroy other people anymore, so that ‘s why I think this “friendship” is working, not that I’m really looking for friends. You are friendly and loyal; I’m sure that you will find friends when you let these stupid thoughts about other people go and let you be yourself. She looked at their hands and laughed at his words. “Happy for you. Oh God, Lynn, I did not think that you’re gay and thanks for the information, but I do not know how it relates to me. If we share these kind of secrets, I’m straight.”
Ryder laughed softly and shook his head. “No no I meant it like, I didn’t want you to think that I was in the closet and wanted a gal pal.” He took another sip from his drink and gave a small nod. “I’ll go to that center place… But… I don’t want to go alone… Would you maybe come with me? Just in case I am stupid?” He asked with full on seriousness.
Kitty giggled, “I know I am a perfect fag hag material and any gay would be lucky to have me, but I did not think that you are interested in me at this point. Sorry Lynn, but there’s no even a single gay bone in your body. “She did not know if she should intervene in his problems but did not want him to go through this all alone. “I’m not a really nice person, but you’re saying that I’m your only one friend here so I guess I have no choice… I’ll go with you”
Ryder smiled and nodded. “Thanks… It… It means a lot… My parents would be ashamed if they knew about me going there, my mom before she had me and my brother was a journalist and my dad’s a lawyer, I mean… They’re both like freaking genius’s and I can’t even read a stupid menu…” He started to cut up his food and shook away the thoughts.
Kitty squeezed his hand, ”Ryder, they are your parents … All parents love their children no matter what, just some of them hide it very deep down, but I’m sure they will support you. Imagine if you can do something about it and bring your first B-, I’m sure they will be happy. But perhaps I ‘ll take away my hand because the part of the lawyer father is a little scary. I ‘m sure you’re a genius, too, may just be in your own unique way.” She took the plate away and looked at him, “Any idea about the rest of the evening? We can go for a walk and play 20 questions on the road?“
Ryder smiled and gave a small nod. His dad was always distant with Ryder, he knew his grades weren’t good and he always felt like he was a burden to his father. But then there was his brother that always brought home A’s and his father was so much prouder of his brother. It hurt him but he had to think of the here and now. Kitty. “Sure, 20 questions is fun, this has been awesome” -he grinned standing up.
Kitty smiled and took money from her purse, putting her part of the bill. She could not remember when she paid for dinner with a guy last time, but they were just friends. She stood up and pulled his hand, wading through the people standing at the entrance. “Okay, I’m starting… your middle name?”
Ryder paid his half and walked with her. He felt bad about not paying for her but money was really tight at the moment. His dad hadn’t had a case in over two weeks. “My middles name is Drew. Ryder Drew Lynn.” He grinned as he walked with her. “My turn, what is your favorite color?”
Kitty sneered that he didn’t offer to pay for her. Kitty lived in a successful family, her father was a famous doctor, so she did not have to think about money - she had a car, she could buy any clothes that she wanted and lived in a spacious home. “Drew, huh? Perhaps I’ll call you so. Blue… Blondes or brunettes?”
Ryder chuckled and shook his head. “Drew? Nice.” He walked a little closer to Kitty and noticed it was slightly cold. If he was wearing a jacket he would offer it… Or would that be weird? “I’d have to say blondes, swear down, not just because you’re blonde, I think it’s a really hot color on girls.”
Kitty was glad that she took the jacket out of the house because it was pretty cold outside. She looked at him with pleased smile “you did not ask anything… I gave you the opportunity to ask me anything, and you’re only interested in my favorite color, seriously? Next time ask two straightaway. If you could go abroad in any country, where would you go?”
Ryder completely forgot to ask her a question. He shook his head and thought. “I’d have to say England, I’m a huge Beatles fan and I’d love to go to Liverpool and see where they came from you know?” He smiled and shoved his hands in his pockets trying to keep his fingers warm. “Okay, two questions. What do you look for in a guy? What is your favorite food?”
Kitty rolled her eyes “The Beatles? It was like one hundred years ago, they are like the dinosaurs … ” She listened to his questions, wondering why he wanna know about the guy. She knew that even if there could be something between them, it wouldn’t work out. She read in the internet his description of the perfect girl and she failed at least on half of the points. Despite superheroes of course. ” I’m a big fan of Italian food, so it’s between the pasta and French fries, cannot choose between them. About guy - I did not really think about it - handsome, hot, sweet, kind, could bear me, strong physically and mentally…could make me laugh and not boring. If there would be a movie about you who would you want to play the lead role?”
Ryder listened to her answers, he was a hopeless romantic, he could tick most of those boxes easily. But she was his friend, a very attractive friend but still, his only friend. Ryder still made a mental note of her favorites foods, he could surprise her at some point in their relationship with these. He thought about his questions and smirked. “Who could pull of this face?” he joked. “Honestly, Logan Leerman would be cool, I thought he was awesome in Percy Jackson. Okay, if you could have any job in the world, what would you do and why?”
Kitty smiled “Probably no one. He’s not bad, but he’s not that charming. Interesting question … The President of the United States-it would be cool to be the first woman president in the United States plus who could be able to cope with it except me. But seriously, probably dancing somewhere, I love to dance.” Play with him was really funny and she liked that after the serious beginning of the evening it changed so. “Celebrity crush?”
Ryder laughed at her first answer and then smiled as she spoke about dancing. She was actually really cool, he had heard a lot of rumors about Kitty but he was so glad to know that they were just rumors and nothing more. “That would have to be Sofía Vergara, she’s really smoking… Okay um, what is your favorite TV show or movie?”
Kitty nodded, “she is really hot, although if I have to choose a woman crash, I would choose Natalie Portman. I can not choose one, so here we go- V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Silver Lining Playbook, Groundhog day for movies and… scrubs, how i met your mother, shameless, friends, misfits for TV shows. Do you have any tattoo that I can’t see?”
Ryder hearing some of the titles of shows and movies made Ryder very happy. If there was one thing he loved more than anything it was a strong TV show like Friends or How I Met Your Mother, Ted Mosby was an inspiration to Ryder, they were both hopeless romantics searching for someone. “I don’t but I want to get one on right… Here” He said pointing to his top left arm. “I want to get something deep and meaningful you know? I’m not too sure what just yet… Um, if the Purge existed a world where you could do anything you wanted for a short space of time, what laws would you break?”
Kitty playfully pushed him with her hip “Do not spoil your lovely arms with tattoo. They go second after your shoulders, which are generally the masterpiece of the nature. Plus you’ll sorry later. Can I break the laws of physics and nature? Then I would speak with people who are important to me who’s no longer exist’ She bit her lip, looking at him “Favorite sex position?”
Ryder grinned as she pushed him, playfully he nudged her back with his hips. As she mentioned talking to people no longer around he looked down, it was clear she wasn’t talking about Winston Churchill… The subject of sex came along… Crap. Ryder looked up and gave a nervous laugh. “Um… I’m actually waiting for the right person, I’ve done stuff but… I’ve not done that… Yet…”
Kitty looked at him with fake offense “Hey, it’s not good to push the girl, especially when you’re twice bigger and stronger, I could fall.» She shook her head from side to side “no way … Lynn, you’re a virgin? And oddly enough, but I was interested in the part about the stuff you’ve done, what kind of stuff exactly? I understand that this question from me just knocks all other thoughts, filling the brain with secret desires, but again you missed the question.”
Ryder felt his cheeks redden. He was cool and all but talking about sex and stuff just made him feel like a five year old again. He gave a small shrug. “You know just hand stuff and oral stuff nothing really exciting… I can’t really say a favorite and my question is… Who was your first kiss?” He asked simply.
Kitty laughed, she found adorable how ashamed he was because of the topic of the conversation. “So masturbation and accepting blowjobs from girls who had crush on you, okay. John Fletcher, my summer boyfriend” She showed him the bench they could seat on and continued, “describe perfect relationship”
Ryder sat down with her and kept his hands in his pockets. He looked around, it was peaceful here. “My perfect relationship would be the kind where we could just talk for hours, hang out, cuddle, kiss all that stuff… Just really connect with the other person, come on cheesy picnic dates and movies dates, have lazy mornings not wanting to get out of bed and always being there for the other person no matter what…” He smiled. “How about you?”
Kitty sat on the bench, moving closer to him with her arms crossed over her chest. “Sounds good, I hope you find yourself the perfect girl.” She bit her lip, thinking that she would not mind to try something with Ryder, but she’s not right girl for him, he was really nice and cute guy and all messages went to her mailbox on the internet were true - he needed a girl like Marley and she could only spoil him. “Basically the same thing, maybe not that cheesy. To be friends in the first place and enjoy each other’s company like Barney and Robin who are strong and free but enjoy being together, that should be a challenge to want to get better for each other.” She put her head on his shoulder, looking at the sky, it was already quite dark and the stars always comforted her,” What do you think about me?”
Ryder looked at her and smiled to himself. It was sweet this, this little moment. But… They were friends, right? “Well… You’re actually really nice Kitty, people said you were kind of a bitch but… I actually feel like I can be who I am with you… You’re funny and caring and you have awesome taste in movies and shows.” He grinned. Ryder took his hands out of his pockets and put them around her for warmth. “I think you’re awesome.”
Kitty looked at him, listening carefully what he said about her before raising a little to murmur in his ear “If you say someone that I’m nice - I will destroy you. You do not want me to hit you in the balls or die a virgin, right? “She smiled when he hugged her and put a little kiss on his cheek ”thank you Ryder” before relaxing in his arms, resting her head on his shoulder. “You did not ask anything again.”
Ryder felt his cheek redden at her kiss. It was surprising but very warming. He wrapped his arms around her hugging her back. Ryder looked up at the stars for a second and smiled. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone how nice and awesome you are… Your question is… What would be the best day of you life?” He asked simply looking back down at her.
Kitty looked at him “you can tell anyone that I’m awesome and how awesome I am exactly, but nobody should know that I can be kind and nice. You didn’t tell that I’m hot and pretty, you don’t think so?» when she asked anyone describe her, she heard hot and mean, but never nice and caring. “Probably making some man incredibly happy marrying him or giving birth to the child who would hate me. What about your best day?”
Ryder shook his head. “No one could hate you, especially not your own kid… They’d love you more than anything…” He said. It was crazy that she would ever think somebody could hate her but even more insane that it would be her own kid. What caught him off guard was the fact that she wanted to be a mother. He’d never have guessed it. “I’d have to say my wedding day… I’m so cheesy…” He chuckled. “Okay uhh… What would you name your kids?”
Kitty knew that she would probably be a good mother one day, but she knew that she would probably make child hate herself. “Anyone can hate me, half the school have already doing this. I would ban all and the child would think that I’m mean or I’d allow all and he would think that I don’t care about him. But enough about children, I’m not going to give birth in the next 10 years for sure… “She shrugged,” you’re really cheesy. I did not think about it, could I say Luke and Leia? You did not answer so I use it as a question: do you find me attractive? “
Ryder her answer made him smile but she was right. Half of the school didn’t like Kitty and the half that did didn’t like her for the right reasons. “Luke and Leia? Stars Wars fan or just How I Met Your Mother again?” He asked with a small grin. When he heard her question he looked down at her and frowned. “I’m not blind, of course I do…” He swallowed hard and then looked back up at the stars. “Do you find me attractive?”
Kitty sighed, “I like how I met your mother, but I’m not that obsessed. Star wars, I’m a huge huge fan. Although how I met your mother came up with the most awesome middle name in history. I wish my parents watch this before I was born…just imagine…Katherine wait for it Wilde. You’re the only person in this school who knows my full name and I will deny it if you would think about making this small circle of two people bigger”. She smiled contentedly at his answer and dabbed him in the ribs with her point finger “sure I do, you’re really handsome”. She felt that it’s getting colder outside and just hugged him back to get more warmth. “Favorite sport to watch and to play?”
Ryder thought this was all really nice and sweet. It was amazing to be this close to someone without an ulterior motive. He had never met a girl that actually liked Star Wars, Kitty was turning out to be almost too good to be true. “Football, football or basketball, I really love the whole physical side of it you know? Getting tackled can be sort of awesome.” He laughed softly. “Okay, one good question… When I join Glee Club, can I sit next to you?”
Kitty watched over him “/When/? Not even /if/ I join? I guess yes, you don’t have another friends in glee club yet. But there’s really no meaning in who’s sitting next to whom. It’s always random, we have even couples who’s not sitting together. I guess this will be my question…why did you change your mind about joining? How’s about your reputation and all “glee club is not cool” thing?”
Ryder looked down at Kitty and smiled. “You’re very persuasive. I mean you know me and if you say this club is good then I’m guessing it will be worth it to join. I’ll easily get onto the football team, I don’t need to worry about that but until the try outs… I need somewhere to be, plus who knows it might be fun.”
Kitty shrugged “I was as persuasive as before, and I said this club’s good before. What’s changed? Mr Schue will be glad to have you…just prepare some song to sing. Easily get onto the football team, huh? Confidence looks good on you, Lynn…Hey, don’t get me wrong, it’s fun spending time with you but your choice of clothes makes this evening shorter than it could be because I don’t want you to get a cold. We should go home.“
Ryder smiled and nodded. “It is pretty cold but… I don’t know but things don’t seem as scary as they should when you have someone to go through it with. If that makes sense? Song wise… I don’t know I only ever sing in the shower but I guess I know a lot of Billy Joel or The Beatles… So I guess I could sing Innocent Man or Yesterday… What do you think?” He asked as he got up from the bench slowly.
Kitty got up from the bench slowly heading toward the house with her hands crossed on the chest to get warmer. “I would choose “An Innocent Man” by Billy Joel. I mean between these two options. There’re bunch of Billy Joel songs that I like more – moving out, my life, Vienna…God I’m admitting that I know lots of Billy Joel’s songs”
Ryder laughed softly and shook his head. He put his arm around her to keep her warm. “Billy Joel fan? The more I learn about you the cooler you get Kitty.” He grinned, he thought for a few seconds and then asked. “What’s your dream? Like no fooling around, what is the dream, that one thing that keeps you going and you secretly long for?”
Kitty looked at his hand around her “Are you hugging me, Lynn? I don’t really consider myself a fan, but I listen to him from time to time. You don’t know yet how cool I am, I’m like fifty shades of awesomeness.” She tripped over a stone and felt that she drops being glad that he hugged her and she didn’t fall down. Hearing his question, she understood that there’s something she couldn’t tell him. Her dream was that there were no abusing children in the world, but she couldn’t tell it because it would lead lots of questions. “Um…I don’t know, like everyone? Be successful, like my job, have piece of hot as my husband…what about yours?”
Ryder made sure to hold her tight when she nearly fell. He smiled softly at her and thought about her dream. It didn’t sound like she was being honest but he wasn’t going to pester her. He had just made one friend and he couldn’t lose that, especially not Kitty. “I want to be a dad, you know? I just want to be somebody who my kids can be proud of and look up to… That one person who can protect them no matter what…” He didn’t want to say anything else as old memories were starting to stir.
Kitty made grimace “What’s wrong with you? You probably the first person I know who wanna be daddy in sixteen. And no daddy like who’s your daddy, but daddy like feeding the child, changing pampers and stuff. What if you meet a girl, like perfect, your ideal and flawless partner material but she can’t have a child? What’s then? Dump her or change your dream?” She saw how different they are, he’s a hopeless romantic and she wasn’t even sure she believes in one true big love, but they could still be friends, right?
Ryder shook his head. “No I don’t mean like I want to have kids right now, when I’m older and no if I met the perfect girl we’d adopt. It doesn’t matter where your child comes from as long as they’re yours. Look at gay couples, they adopt most of the time and that child grows up calling their dad’s dad. My dream is to be a dad one day, my dream right now s just to pass high school…”
Kitty looked at him straight in the eyes “Ryder, you’re so romantic I’m not even sure if I find this annoying or cute. I’m not like that… One day I’d probably met someone and maybe have a child one day, but I’m not thinking about that too much. I know lots of people against adopting children by gay couples, but I actually find it really good-children get the love and support they want. Look at Neil Patric Harris and his husband, did you saw the interview when they should guess each other’s answers to questions. They are putting bar of a marriage too high. I’m sure they’re awesome parents. And you’ll pass high school, Lynn, everybody does. “
Ryder kept his head down as she spoke. He had never really told anyone that’s what he wanted from life and she didn’t seem happy to hear it. They sounded like two different people but that wasn’t always a bad thing. Look at Ted and Robin, they were two different people and they made it together right up to the very end. “My cousin Johnny didn’t…”
Kitty noticed that he became a little upset. “Your dream is actually good, Lynn…for a guy like you. You’ll find someone and make some girl happy for real, maybe the happiest. I’m sure you’re one of these guys, who does his best to make sure that his girl would feel herself beautiful, special and all this stuff. The fact that your cousin didn’t doesn’t mean you won’t pass it either. I think you’re smart and with my help there won’t be a way you don’t pass the school.”
Ryder nodded as she spoke. He couldn’t lie, failing was one of his biggest fears. The disappointment on his dad’s face was so real to picture. He couldn’t disappoint his father. Ryder sighed and noticed they had finally made it back. His chest fell a little but still, this night had been very worthwhile. “Well… Here we are… Look Kitty, this has been really fun… I’m really glad I came out tonight…”
Kitty rose on her tiptoes to put soft kiss on his cheek. “Good night, Ryder…I’ll see you around”. Part of her didn’t want this evening to end, but it was late and her parents should be back home already. She wondered how he get back home and thought about giving him a ride crossed her head, but she decided let him sold this by himself. She went to the door and smiled a little, waving goodbye.
Daria was sitting alone in a tiny café that not many knew about. It was an odd time to be out, 6pm. Most people were making their way home after work or venturing out to bars, not cafés. But Daria had a craving for the delicious pastries that the owner made herself. Amaretto flavoured flaky, melt in the mouth delicacies. And she sat quietly reading a book and sipping her coffee, black, no sugar and nibbling at the huge carbohydrate and butter laden delight. She hummed in appreciation with each morsel and turned the pages in her book.
The bell rang as the only other customer left waving goodbye to the elderly owner, Rosaria. Daria didn't look up form her book until she heard footsteps approaching her direction. But then there was a strange force that made her glance away from her book for a moment and a look of recognition washed over her blank face.
"Ryder" She said warmly and motioned for the woman to sit down. Daria had spoken to Ryder just a couple of times and she instantly wondered how she was after the miscarriage she had suffered just a couple of weeks ago. She slid the bookmark in between the pages of her book and placed it on the table and leaning forward to the rickety wooden table on her elbows she looked over the young woman's face. "How have you been Ryder? She asked, genuinely concerned for the woman's well being.
What: Rachel, Ryder and Quinn finally reunite and hug out any remaining issues.
Quinn rocked on the balls of her feet as she stood on the platform waiting for the 9:00am Magnet train to arrive. Having arrived in Saffron City late the night before, it was safe to assume that Quinn had yet to get a single wink of sleep. She was just too excited to sleep. It had been weeks since she'd last seen Rachel and Ryder and now she got to see them both. To say she was excited was an understatement. Even since she'd left Johto, she'd been missing the two of them like crazy and the thought of seeing their faces again filled her with an unprecedented amount of joy. And dread. She had to reluctantly admit to the fact that a lot had happened since late September and Quinn was a little worried that things may have become awkward between them, considering she'd kissed Rachel the last time they were face to face and Ryder had ended up dating her ex-boyfriend who had then left him to go back to Fiore for work she refused to do due to her reasons for being in Kanto in the first place. She just had to hope that they'd get past that and go back to being friends.
Ryder leaned back as far as he could in his seat, squinting his eyes closed against the fall sun and tilting his head back in his best attempt to sleep. He knew that he still had quite the hike ahead of him to get back to Cerulean City, so any sleep that he could get was appreciated. His last few months in Johto certainly hadn't gone the way he had expected them to at all, but he was ready to take some time off from that and put it behind him as best as he could. Despite the unfinished business of searching for his dad - which, in retrospect, really should have been a higher priority than following Sam and Kurt around like a lovesick puppy anyway - he was looking forward to going home for a bit. It would be good to see his mom, to maybe visit Brittany if she was around, and to spend some time focusing on himself. And seeing Quinn again would be a plus, he thought to himself as he felt the wheels of the train slow and he opened his eyes to shoot a reassuring smile at Rachel. He fully planned on making himself scarce so that his two favorite girls could spend some quality time together, and he just hoped it worked out for her better than his own misplaced feelings for his best friends had. He also hoped Quinn wouldn't hold any of that against him, he mused as he thought he saw her familiar blonde hair on the platform through the window.
Rachel wasn't sure exactly how to comfort Ryder after his breakup with Sam and Kurt - honestly, Rachel never had been confident that that would have lasted, but was happy for Ryder at the time, as his happiness after what had happened with that boy back in Johto was her top priority concerning their friendship. She anxiously fiddled with the train ticket in her hand and nibbled on her lip, catching Ryder's eye eventually and returning his smile as he did so. She was feeling a spectrum of emotions coursing through her, jumping just a bit when she realized that their method of transportation was beginning to slow to a stop. The girl practically jumped out of her seat and darted out of the doors of the train, earning a few annoyed glares from the other citizens inside of it. With a frantic glance back at Ryder, she beamed over at him in an uncertain way before running towards the head of blonde hair that she recognized upon arriving at her hometown of Saffron City. Without even giving Quinn a moment to realize that she was there, she tackled the other girl in an enormous hug.
Quinn watched as the train pulled into the station and craned her neck to try and catch sight of her friends. As the people trickled off the train, Quinn caught sight of a little blur running towards her and grinned widely as Rachel ran straight for her. Her arms were already out and waiting, ready to catch her friend as the brunette literally tackled her. Staggering back a couple of steps, she steadied herself and immediately picked up Rachel and spun her around in her arms. It was almost like a scene straight out of the Notebook, except for the fact that they weren't kissing. But Quinn was gripping onto Rachel for dear life however, and taking in as much of her best friend as possible. She took a deep breath, inhaling the familiar scent of Rachel and felt her body completely relax. All the stress she'd been feeling and any doubt or fear of things being awkward, dissipated with that one hug and she really wished they'd hurried up and done this earlier. "I missed you, Stack. So fucking much. Let's not do that again for awhile."
Ryder took his time scooping up his belongings, casting a glance around the train to make sure Rachel hadn't dropped anything in her frenzy to get to Quinn. He knew that Quinn was like family to him, and that things were going to be okay, but a part of him still held back, afraid that she was going to be upset at him. He hung his head, slightly embarrassed now that the moment was finally upon him, and shuffled his feet to follow in Rachel's path towards his Bacon Queen. He had screwed up and he knew it; he never should have let himself get in to such a weird relationship, and looking back it was a lot easier to see that it had been for all the wrong reasons. That he hadn't really wanted both Sam and Kurt had become painfully obvious as soon as Sam was gone and he had been alone with the other brunette, and he was ashamed of himself when he admitted that coming home to an empty hotel room with a note from Kurt explaining that he was leaving had been a huge relief. But he took a deep breath, tried to push it behind him, and hoped that everyone else around him was willing to do the same thing as he shifted his focus towards the hugging blob that was Quinn and Rachel. A grin crept onto his face at the sight of them, and as soon as Quinn looked up, still wrapped around Rachel, Ryder waved at her happily, all the while maintaining just a bit of distance from the pair.
Rachel clung to her best friend as she buried her nose into the blonde girl's neck, trying her very best to be as close to her as physically possible. "I missed you too. Yeah, I- If you have to go anywhere, I'll just go with you." She breathed out, frantically turning her head to the side to place a kiss onto Quinn's cheek as the other girl spun her around. Eventually, she leaned back from the hug, her eyes locked on Quinn's in an alarmingly adoring way - Rachel Berry definitely wasn't known for her subtlety. "Hi." She breathed out, unable to stop herself from placing a small kiss onto Quinn's nose before finally turning around to face Ryder. The brunette wasn't very willing to part from her friend however, as she kept Quinn's arms around her waist by letting her hands rest on Quinn's. "Ryder! Are you coming, Slowpoke?" Rachel called out, a grin gracing her face as she teased her friend. To say he had been a little bummed out would have been an exaggeration, and Rachel would be more than willing to let him into their embrace for a group hug.
Quinn tried her best not to shiver as Rachel burrowed further into the embrace. Their arms were wrapped impossibly tight around each other, but to Quinn it was the most comfortable she'd been in a long time. "I like that plan." She sighed happily, her body melting as Rachel kissed her cheek. Quinn only had a moment to prepare herself, because before she knew it she was staring into Rachel's deep brown eyes and everything else went out the window. She forgot that they were in public, that there were other people around and that Ryder was supposed to be with Rachel. If Rachel hadn't been the one to pull away and directly address Ryder when she had done, then Quinn wasn't sure she would have been able to stop herself from kissing Rachel right after the adorable kiss that had been placed on her nose. Reluctantly she tore her eyes away from Rachel and took in a deep breath before looking over at Ryder. "Ohana! Took you long enough. If you're not careful, Rachel's going to make it so that I'm all hugged out." She laughed, holding an arm out so that it was clear she wanted a hug from her best guy friend too.
Ryder was glad that he had stayed back as he watched the interactions between Quinn and Rachel, and he couldn't help but raise an eyebrow curiously at the way the pair of them were together. He supposed it had been a long time since he'd really seen what their friendship had grown into - he'd been gone, then Rachel had been busy with Isa, and then Quinn had been gone... But this was definitely different than he remembered it. And it definitely made him a little bit curious about how Quinn really felt about Rachel, since he'd already spent time talking to the other brunette. But it wasn't his business - Saffron was just a quick stop on the way for him before he went home, so when Quinn opened an arm for him, he closed the distance and wrapped an arm around her, grinning with excitement. "Sorry to keep you waiting, Bacon Queen," he teased, sticking his tongue out at Rachel for her comment about him being a Slowpoke. "It's really good to see you," he added, squeezing the blonde beside him and finally feeling like things were starting to be right again in his world.
Rachel let out a breathy sigh as Quinn's body seemed to mold towards her and knew that the way that she and Quinn were gazing into each other's eyes was a bit inappropriate given where they were but couldn't help but continue. As soon as she heard the words "Ohana!", Rachel swiveled around, realizing that she was probably clinging a bit too hard to the other girl, so she shifted away from her just a bit. The girl felt a large smile clawing onto her lips as Ryder greeting the other girl after sticking his tongue out at Rachel. "So, are we going to go our own ways now or should we grab dinner or something of the sort? There are excellent places to eat, at Saffron!" She gushed. "If you feel like eating Magikarp, I have to tell you that you're out of luck though, because the people of Saffron City don't believe in cooking Pokémon."
Quinn gladly hugged Ryder, only just realising just how much she had missed her friend. For years it had just been her and Sam, and then Rachel entered the picture closely followed by Ryder and Quinn had friends. He was an actual friend, that wasn't just there because he was romantically involved with her. And unlike Zoey or even Sugar, Ryder felt less like a friend and more like family. He was the brother she'd never had. Having Rachel pull away from her made her frown, but she quickly wiped the expression off of her face and just focused on greeting Ryder. "Well, better late than never. I'm glad you're here. Ry." She said, grinning as she pulled away. "And I really don't mind. Although I'm going to go ahead and say no to eating Pokemon too. As much as I've heard that Tepig bacon is amazing, I draw the line at eating Pokemon."
Ryder embraced Quinn, feeling as if a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He knew that he had missed her terribly, but a part of him had been so preoccupied with the thought that she might be upset at him for getting himself into such a weird situation with her ex-boyfriend and his ex-boyfriend that he hadn't dared to hope it would be this normal to be with her again. He was grateful for the two of them, both of whom had been there for him through so much in the past few months. Even as he still held on to Quinn, he pulled back slightly to make a face at Rachel. "Magikarp? No way, dudette, no eating Magikarp allowed," Ryder said, horrified at the thought of eating the Pokemon that had been his dad's starter so long ago. "And no Tepig, not even in the name of bacon," he agreed, and then another thought hit him. "But you know, you guys can just go by yourselves. I know you have a lot to catch up on, and I've got a long way back to Cerulean anyway," he offered, casting a look between the two as he finally - reluctantly - let go of Quinn.
Rachel made a face at Quinn's statement that Tepig bacon was amazing. "I don't eat meat so I wouldn't know." She pursed her lips before grinning, eventually frowning once Ryder said that he was about to move onto another city. "Are you sure, Ryder? We'd both love to have dinner with you, I'm sure." She protested, leaning forward to place a hand on his arm, squeezing it lightly as she did so. "Are you positive you can't stay for dinner or something of the sort? If you have to leave, I'll accept it but I think it would be wonderful if you could grab a bite to eat with Quinn and myself." Rachel spoke in a rush, a hopeful smile gracing her lips.
Quinn joined Rachel in her frowning. They'd only just been reunited and now he wanted to leave? As per usual, Rachel was the first to speak up but Quinn agreed and nodded along. "Yeah, it's been so long. You could at least stay for dinner, right?" She asked, doing her best puppy dog eyes at the boy. If he really wanted to go, that was fine. But if he was only doing this because he thought it would be awkward if he stayed or because he figured that they wanted to leave, then that didn't sit right with Quinn. "I'd really like it if you stayed, but I'll understand if you have to go. The walk is a nice one, but I do remember it being quite far." While talking to him, her arm naturally sought out Rachel and wrapped itself around the back of her friends waist. If she'd have been thinking clearly she might've questioned the action, but right now all her attention was focused on Ryder.
Ryder arched an eyebrow at Rachel, shaking his head in her direction. "Your life must be so sad without bacon," he teased her, voice light and playful. "How are we ever going to fill in the empty spots in the bacon court with only you around?" he added, mad at himself for feeling a pang in his chest at the thought of the people - well, person really - who he had last teased about having a spot. He shrugged it off, though, keeping his face impassive at the way that Quinn had slid her arm around Rachel as if it was the most natural thing in the world. He wanted to give them some time for just the two of them, but at both of their protests, he decided they'd get plenty of it when he left, anyway, so there wasn't really a rush. "Well... I am kind of hungry," he conceded, glad to spend more time with the pair of them. "And the company's not awful."
Rachel opened her mouth to speak before just letting her point of view on the matter spill out. "Well, I for one, think that the slaughtering of... pig." She whispered, a worried look gracing her face as she did so. "Is appropriate at all. Not to mention the fact that some cavemen even attempt to cook Tepig or - or even on some occasions, Spoink and Grumpig! Sometimes even Swinub and Pignite! Those people are really in need of therapy or something of the sort, as I can't imagine why anyone would want to eat one of their beloved companions! It's barbaric and-and brutal!" She insisted, her hands flying upwards as she ranted. Eventually, she felt herself simmer down at the hand around her waist. Rachel shot Quinn a warm, soft smile and shifted so that she could take a step towards her friend, paying attention to what Ryder was saying as he spoke. She clapped her hands together excitedly. "Wonderful! Oh shush you; I'm incredible company, as is Quinn." She stuck her tongue out playfully before finally turning to Quinn. "Do you think the two of you would like to go out to a restaurant or head to the Berry household for dinner? And by the Berry household, I'm of course talking about the home that I shared wi- that I lived in while still in this region." She corrected herself, deciding that it would be best not to mention Isa or Jesse for the time being. "And my fathers of course would like to meet the two of you at some point, but - Oh, I'm talking too much. What would the two of you like to do?"
Quinn grinned as she noticed that her own action was enough to stop Rachel's rant. As much as she loved the girl and respected her viewpoint, Quinn couldn't understand how anyone could refrain from eating bacon. There was one thing to not eat Pokemon, because as Rachel had stated, they were their companions and Quinn couldn't see how anyone could eat Pokemon. But regular animals were not Pokemon so she saw no problem with enjoying their meat. But she'd managed to get Rachel to stop yelling, and even received a smile that made her melt, for her efforts. She really could just stand and stare at that smile forever, but Rachel was already looking at her and it was clear that she'd said something that involved Quinn making a decision about something. Oh why hadn't she just listened for once? Shrugging, she pulled Rachel in and pressed a kiss to the top of her head, hoping that would be enough to distract her from that fact that Quinn had no idea what she'd just been asked. "You guys pick. I'm easy."
Ryder blinked in surprise, reaching out to place a hand on Rachel's shoulder as she ranted about bacon. It was almost amusing how worked up she got on the topic, especially right after he and Quinn had both vetoed the idea of eating Pokemon. But then again, it was Rachel - he almost chuckled remembering the first time she had ever introduced herself and the block of text that had accompanied it. She certainly never ran out of stuff to say, but that was one of the things that he liked so much about her. He pulled his hand back quickly, though, seeing that Quinn had beaten him to it and seemed to have calmed Rachel completely just by one touch. He blinked down at his shoes, shuffling awkwardly and feeling a little bit like he was intruding on a private moment between his two friends as Quinn kissed the top of Rachel's head. He grinned down at his feet, though, thinking that at least Rachel didn't have to worry about the blonde returning her feelings - or at least that was how it seemed to him, as an outside viewer. "Um... well, Rach, your hometown. I never did spend a lot of time in Saffron growing up, so I don't know what's around. I'd love to meet your dads, though," Ryder said, remembering that that had been an option and thinking it might be a good way for him to butt out of Rachel and Quinn's conversation.
Rachel flashed Quinn another radiant smile as she felt soft lips press against her forehead, turning her grin over to Ryder when she felt his hand at her shoulder as well. She pursed her lips, shifting on her feet as her two companions both responded vaguely to her question before she came up with what she deemed to be an appropriate compromise. "Well, there's this amazing sushi and salad bar a few minutes away - and mind you, there's plenty of dessert so if you feel like being a bit unhealthy, it will be completely justified - so I was thinking that we could go there and get our food to-go with two extra servings and we could bring some to my fathers! I could introduce the two of you to them; and if you feel like trying to win yourself a Gym badge, go ahead -" She remarked with a wink, "-but we could all share a lovely dinner and after having a few pleasant dinner conversations and some tea afterwards - my fathers love making tea and biscotti, so you'll be subjected to that - Quinn and I can head over to my little cottage over here and you can go to your destination after hugging us a lot! We expect to hear from you tonight though. Video chat us to let us know that you got there okay, alright?" She spoke both for herself and for Quinn but figured that the other girl was thinking the same thing anyways, shooting Ryder a worried look. After travelling with him for so long, the prospect of him not being there with her worried Rachel quite a bit. The entire situation was odd. While she couldn't say that she had been too surprised over Kurt and Ryder parting ways after Sam did (now that part was a bit of a shocker), she was still very protective over Ryder in particular.
Quinn nodded along, not really caring what they did because all that mattered to her was that Rachel was standing right next to her and things were okay between her and Ryder. For the first time in weeks, she felt at peace. "That sounds amazing actually. Let's do that and then we can just chill before you have to set off, Ry. I know it delays you setting off but who knows when we'll see you next so I demand some of your time now." Quinn said, giving him her best puppy dog eyes. She did kind of want Rachel all to herself, but she reasoned that she had weeks with her best friend, and only the next few hours with Ryder so she was going to make the most of it. "Although I think I'll pass on trying to win a gym badge. Not really the first impression I want to leave your fathers with, Rach." She smirked, nudging her friend with her shoulder. "After all, I'm sure between Dylan and Gizmo I'd have it in the bag, and I'd rather they didn't hate me right away." It was nice to be able to tease Rachel face to face again, because even though skype had been okay for a few weeks, seeing Rachel's face on a screen was nowhere near as good as seeing it face to face.
Ryder raised his eyebrows in response to Rachel's suggestion, unable to stop himself from chuckling lightly at the thought. He loved sushi just as much as the next person, but he was pretty sure he'd never sat down and had tea time in his life. For Rachel and Quinn, though, he was willing to try anything - even if he ended up seeming totally silly in front of Rachel's dads. A little part of him was still amazed that Quinn and Rachel even wanted him to stay, but he was reluctant to leave, a bigger part of him scared that they might not actually end up meeting up and traveling together again once the holidays were through. He knew he wanted to go back to Johto and look for his dad, but the thought of going back hurt - and so did the idea of leaving his mom alone again. He shrugged it off, though, smiling brightly at his two friends and happy to follow their lead. "Count me in," he conceded, winking at Quinn. "I wouldn't want to deprive you of your bacon underling any more than necessary." He kept the bright grin on his face, making a conscious effort not to smirk at the interactions between Rachel and Quinn and instead honing in on the idea of the gym battle. "Dudette, I'm with Quinn on this one - I'm sure your dads are awesome, but my team basically exists to steamroll over rock types," Ryder said sheepishly, idly wondering if it was time to let at least Pippa out of her Pokeball. He had kept her cooped up for the long train ride, and she would probably be mad at him when he did let her out, but he decided against it for the time being, not wanting to distract himself with the crazy water mon.
Rachel pouted as soon as Quinn and Ryder commented on her father's Gym, crossing her arms over her chest while jutting her lower lip out. "But that's not fair! Why do the two of you have to have grass and water-type Pokémon? It really isn't fair! But I have to tell you that my father is very, very good so I don't think you'd get your badge as easily as you think you will." Rachel stated, her expression shifting as soon as the other woman and Ryder came to a decision as to what they were going to do. "Oh, this will be a lot of fun. Well, we might as well get to walking over there, right? Let's go!" She tugged on Quinn's hand, walking backwards as her own eyes widened in excitement. "Alright, so there are a few places that we can go depending on what kind of food you feel like eating, at the moment! So, Quinn. Ryder. What would the two of you like to eat?"
Quinn noticed Rachel getting a little dramatic at their little jab at her fathers gym, and decided that giving her another kiss on the head was most definitely the best way to diffuse the situation. "I don't doubt he's good. I still think I'd beat him though. Not sure what Ryder's talking about though. He might have a team of water Pokemon, but I can't exactly imagine any of them doing anything that isn't just adorable." She quipped, sticking her tongue out at her friend as she felt herself being pulled by Rachel. "Sushi sounds good but I'll eat anything. Though it's still early so maybe we're better off with a place for brunch?" Her eyes drifted down to their hands and Quinn grinned happily, not really caring where they ended up going. As long as Rachel kept holding her hand, Quinn would follow her anywhere.
Ryder had to bite back a smile as he watched the scene in front of him. He was pretty aware that he was one of the most oblivious people on the planet, but even he couldn't ignore all the kisses and the hand holding that was happening in front of him. He wished that there was someone he could tell about it later - he would have even made a special effort to count all the little moments his two best girls were sharing - but there was no one. He'd lost the two other closest people in his life. So instead he just rolled his eyes fondly at them, mostly tuning out their banter unless he heard his name. "Hey! My team kicked butt against Isabelle what's her face, thank you very much," Ryder reminded Quinn, bumping her free shoulder lightly and then following after the pair as they took off. "I vote somewhere with bacon," he teased, wondering if Rachel would even care enough to protest now that she and Quinn were hand in hand.
Rachel snickered along with the other two as soon as Quinn started poking fun at Ryder's team, deciding to just lean up against the other girl as her team was a bit pitiful regarding battling at the moment. When she heard Quinn's reply to her, she nodded along with the other girl and hummed in agreement, swinging their hands back and forth as Ryder defended his team. "No bacon." She stopped and mock-glared at the man for a few moments before letting her face break out into a grin, pulling a funny face at Ryder while she started walking once more.
Quinn snorted and continued to just let Rachel pull her along. This was how it was meant to be. Just a group of friends happy to be reunited. But it was more than that and she knew it.
