21. Twenty-one years. It felt so odd to have waited for a day like this for years, and now it had finally arrived. Sure, she had been in possession of a fake ID for quite some time by now, but this number seemed special. Sixteen had marked something as well, and had given her a car, but this meant adulthood in a way Santana couldn’t explain. The Wonder Twins had woken her up with song, and for once she hadn’t been able to not smile widely at them as she threw a pillow after Rachel. She knew the massive amount of food in the kitchen was their way of apologizing for not being able to celebrate tonight with her.
Kurt had a big important fashion related meeting, or something, at Vogue and Rachel had been booked for an appearance at a smaller theater downtown. They had promised to go out with her come the weekend and she had agreed easily. Kurt had bought her a pair of boots he had seen her admire in one of the Vogue catalogues, promising her that he had used his employee discount and some kissing ass to get the price down. Yes, Santana adored fancy and expensive presents, but she didn’t want her friends to starve because of her birthday present. Rachel gave her a gift certificate for two to a spa day, and for once Santana hadn’t made a joke about how she couldn’t wait to bring someone else.
It had been a wonderful morning, and calls and text messages had kept rolling in. Her mother had cried on the phone, constantly repeating how it didn’t make any sense that she was now such a grown-up, and it had only made her chuckle. Of course she hadn’t hung up before promising that she would come home and visit soon enough. Quinn had called from New Haven, wishing her best regards and promising to make an appearance soon, as well as bringing Puck. He had called earlier in the day, making her laugh as he’d forced her to promise that her ass would still be looking as fit when she was forty-one.
One call hadn’t been made, however, and Santana sighed as she looked at the blank display once more. It wasn’t ideal to work on your birthday, but it was needed to make time go by, especially when her palm was burning from the want to check her phone every other second. She and Dani had plans tonight, because she wasn’t spending her birthday alone, and as the hours passed and nothing popped in from the blonde, Santana wondered if she even remembered. It would make sense for Dani to forget, considering how they had never actually been together to celebrate either of their birthdays. However, it unfortunately didn’t make her stop staring at her phone any less.
When her shift came to an end, she checked her phone once more and left out a small sigh. Mercedes had sent her a long text, and she saw that she had a missed call from a certain blonde as well, a call she had no intentions of returning. Pulling her things out of her locker, Santana eagerly put on her coat, wanting nothing more than to get back home, shower, and text Dani about what time they should meet up. Pushing the locker closed, she grabbed her purse and went straight for the member of staff exit. Her eyes were glued to her phone as she shoved open the door, only glancing up to scan the alley for a second, before drifting back to her phone. That however, didn’t last long, because within a second her eyes were moving back up as a wide smile spread across her face.
Dani was leaning against the brick wall, looking gorgeous as ever, and Santana instantly forgot everything about her phone as she dropped it into her pocket. Her legs couldn’t have moved her faster towards Dani without making it embarrassing, and she gently rested her hands on the smaller woman’s hips as she was within reach. “Hi,” She mumbled, leaning in to press a much too needed kiss to Dani’s lips, her smile breaking through as she pulled back. “What are you doing here? I thought we weren’t meeting up until later.” It was obvious that she wasn’t upset about seeing Dani, her thumbs stroking over her former girlfriend’s hips slowly. This day was becoming much better by the second.
