On 24th we checked out of Villa Oropreza (amidst much controversy over how much we owed, which we negotiated back to what we had originally agreed but it left a bitter taste) and into the Parador Santa Maria La Real. We had originally planned to stay in Sucre for just three days but, seeing as we hadn't seen much of the town and we were still not well, we jumped at the chance of staying in the town's nicest hotel for $60 per night! There we recovered by relaxing on the sunlit terraces, sleeping in a super king size bed and venturing out for a jugo mixto (fruit smoothies!) when we felt up to it. Amongst this there was laundry, travelmin and life admin and we made it up to the Mirador, the beautiful vista of the town up by the monastery, a couple of times too. Our itinerary for Bolivia was always created with 4-5 days buffer along the way, to allow for travel delays, sickness(!) and oooo-this-place-is-supposed-to-be-good-let's-take-a-detour-there. It wasn't intended for the slack to all be used up in Sucre for food poisoning recovery, but nevertheless we ended up staying in the Parador for four nights, delaying ourselves again to make sure that we were healthy enough to make the onward journey to Potosí and on to Uyuni. This involved a scramble of rebooking of accommodation and the salt flats tour, and we are taking a gamble that we will actually make it to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile for 1 November, as planned! Fingers crossed that it will work out...
