How much money would you have to earn to ever work as a paraeducator (aka paraprofessional aka teaching assistant)? It’s like being an educational nurse to the teacher’s doctor. Supporting students with disabilities: academic support, assisting in the bathroom, taking data, leading small groups, managing behavior, etc.) You work 7.5 hours a day (8 hours +30 minute unpaid lunch) for 180 days/year.

Also, if you wouldn’t do this job, how much would you say the position “deserves” or “should” be compensated for what the position requires of the employee?

My union just brought a tentative agreement to us and we vote on it today. The wage increase is less than satisfactory, it isn’t terrible. However, there is virtually no longevity incentive. After the raise, I will be making less than $2/hour more than a new hire in my position and this is my 8th year. A coworker who is on her 29th year only makes $7/hour more than I do.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

I finally left my job in accounting. Last Friday I started as a paraeducator at the local middle school. I love my new job. Also I'm going to get healthier doing this. I drink water all day (not soda), bring my lunch instead of ordering from the restaurant (no more burgers and fries). Plus I'm walking! With my old job I was lucky to get 4000 steps now I'm doing over 10000.

To those needing hope

I work as a paraeducator, or teacher's aide, for students in the PALS program. Today our school had a field trip to the local ice rink as a reward for good behavior. My student, who I will affectionately call N throughout this story, was so excited to go despite the fact that they'd never done this before and their motor skills are lacking.

I was worried. I was worried they'd fall and hurt themself, or they'd get upset and lash out on the ice. My head teacher had me go with them to help N with getting their skates on, keeping an eye out for them, etc.

I walked with them (curling shoes be lit) around the edge of the rink. They watched everyone else skating in the middle and kept saying "I want to do that."

Out of the blue, another student approaches with one of those balancers. He helps N navigate off the wall long enough to grab on and he personally takes this kid out onto the ice and around the rink in the thick of it. Another kid joined in and taught N how to push their feet so they could go wherever they wanted. By the end of our trip, N could get all the way around the rink faster than I could follow.

Tl;dr - A bunch of kids, with no thought of reward, helped one of their fellow students learn how to skate as best as that students limitations let them. There are some good kids out there, man.
