After a knee injury, Dean Winchester’s ballet career could very well be over. Refusing to think about it too much, Dean returns to his hometown to take some time off and relax. However, when his old ballet teacher Rowena gets sick he has to take over teaching, and he keeps seeing his ex-boyfriend around town. An ex who he definitely doesn’t have any feelings for anymore… right?
Castiel Novak has a good life. He loves his two adopted children, Jack and Claire, and he’s happy with his job as a paramedic. There’s nothing more he needs. Least of all having his ex from back when he was a teenager show up suddenly and distract him from what’s important. Which shouldn’t even be a problem because Cas is totally over him… right?
With some meddling from Charlie, Dean and Cas find themselves confronted with feelings they thought were left in the past.

Cas is getting groceries on his way home from a 48 hour shift and so he’s almost certain he’s dreaming—his mind spinning the most improbable scenarios in its exhausted state—when he sees the black Impala in the parking lot. He doesn’t know much about cars, but he can recognise a ‘67 Chevrolet Impala when he sees it. And the thing is, he’s only seen this one in one particular driveway before.
The Impala was John Winchester’s greatest pride, he talked about it sometimes as if it was more important than his own children were. He acted like that sometimes too. When he was sober enough, he would show Dean and Cas how to take care of it. Dean was hanging onto the man’s every word. Cas was only there because Dean wanted him to be.
Cas doesn’t have many good memories or positive associations regarding John Winchester, but those afternoons do have a soft spot in his heart. Mostly because he still remembers the happiness in Dean’s smile the few times John acknowledged him as his son.
So that’s everything on Cas’ mind as he walks through the aisles of the grocery store. Dean’s smile. The smile of a man he hasn’t seen or interacted with in years, who he hasn’t even really been thinking about, and now he can’t get him out of his head.
The thing is, it’s entirely possible that Dean is really back. He has family here, friends, people he’s surely visiting. At first, Cas was surprised when he moved back, that Dean wasn’t here anymore, that the person that had always made this town his home was off somewhere living his life, and his pathway was probably never going to cross Cas’ again.
Cas shakes his head. He’s tired, his mind sluggish and slow, and he’s grateful that he wrote a grocery-list, because otherwise he would leave the store with everything except what he really needs. He pushes Dean’s smile to the most distant edge of his mind and focuses on his neat handwriting and Claire’s messy scrawl, asking for Pringles.
When he makes it back to the parking lot, the Impala is gone. When he’s back home, he has successfully convinced himself that he was imagining it.
