Today we celebrate the Holy Virgin Martyr Paraskeve. Saint Paraskeve was born to noble parents who could not have children, yet prayed fervently and received a child. She was raised in piety, acquiring many of the virtues while still a young girl. When her parents passed away, Saint Paraskeve distributed her wealth and became a nun. Being desired by two consecutive governors of Rome, she refused their hand in marriage and suffered many tortured because of this. The most well known torture is when they placed her in a cauldron of boiling oil and tar. The Saint remained unharmed as if in a cool bath. The governor Antoninus asked her to splash some of the boiling mixture on him to see if it was actually hot. He was blinded by the tar thrown on his face and cried out that he believed in the God of Paraskeve. The Saint healed his eyes and baptised the governor as a Christian. This is why she is often seen holding a plate with a pair of eyes, as she is the patron saint of any affliction to the eyes. She was further tortured by the succeeding governor of Rome who eventually had Saint Paraskeve beheaded.
