Alec swung Max around in a slow circle, listening to him giggle before tossing him up into the air, catching him as his phone started to ring. He gave Max an exaggerated gasp, his eyes going wide. “Is that Papa? I think that might be Papa!”
Max gave a delighted giggle, throwing his hands up and into the air.
Alec smiled and pulled him close, cradling him against his shoulder as he picked up his phone. “Hey babe, you on your way home?”
“Uhhhh,” Magnus turned away from the phone and scowled. “No, that is not how you hold her, fuck, Jace, you have kids, is that how you hold children!”
Alec chuckled and listened to Magnus growl at his parabatai. “Magnus?”
“Alexander, yes, hello love, I’m sorry,” Magnus said, turning his attention back to the phone. “I have a bit of a situation. I’m going to be bringing some children back to the loft with me.”
Alec blinked and considered that for a long moment. “Children...plural?”
“Yes, uh, shit,” Magnus swore.
Alec listened to shuffling over the phone and wondered exactly what Magnus was dealing with that was making him swear like that. “Do you need me to come help you?”
“No, no,” Magnus said, waving a hand. “All right, everyone ready?” A chorus of yes’ and he relaxed turning back to the phone. “Trying to get a bunch of shadowhunters to not treat children like footballs-”
“Hey!” Jace protested.
Alec strode towards the kitchen, his eyes flying around as he assessed what they had on hand quickly. “How many, what ages? All warlocks?”
“All warlocks,” Magnus said, summoning a portal. “Four of them. A newborn who is maybe six months, a two year old, a four year old and a very pissed off ten year old. Now everyone hold hands!”
Alec took a deep breath and looked at the portal appearing in the living room. “I need to ask for some time off.”
Magnus grinned in delight. “Ever my practical soldier, darling. I’ve already talked to Jia. She’s aware of the situation. We both have the rest of the week off while we look for placements.”
“All right,” Alec said with a smile. “I’ll see you in a second,” he said, blowing a kiss to the phone before he hung up, turning his attention to Max, who’d turned wide blue eyes to him. “Things are about to get very hectic around here, Max.”
Max threw both arms up in the air and wiggled in excitement. “Gah!”
Alec watched Magnus and Jace both step through the portal, Magnus holding onto the toddler and newborn, and Jace onto the two older kids. He knelt down in front of everyone, smiling at them all. “Hey guys. My name is Alec. You’re going to be staying with us for a little while.”
The two oldest scowled at him and Alec grinned, standing up to look at Magnus. He stepped in close and kissed Magnus softly. “Welcome home,” he managed his voice quiet. “Now, first things first. Introductions, rooms, food and clothes?”
Magnus exhaled in a rush. “Yes.” He looked to the rest of the kids. “The newborn is Maria. The two year old is Ariel. The four year old is Christopher, I think. Mr. Stoic over there,” he gestured to the ten year old that was still scowling at them all. “Hasn’t shared his name with us yet.”
Alec nodded and turned to the ten year old that was standing stiffly at Jace’s side. He knelt down in front of him.
“What do you want?” the boy said, scowling.
Alec smiled. “I need your help.”
“I don’t trust you, or any shadowhunters,” the boy said. He crossed his arms over his chest.
“In my experience, trust is earned,” Alec said, agreeing with a nod. “I’ll work on that. In the meantime, I need to help Magnus with Maria and Ariel while he gets a room ready for you all. So you’re going to watch Max for me.”
Alec deposited Max into the surprised kid’s arms and stood up.
“Wh-wait!” The kid sputtered, carefully holding Max. “You can’t just-”
“I just did,” Alec responded, reaching out for the newborn from Magnus, smiling at her. “Hey there, beautiful,” he cooed, carefully cradling her against his shoulder. After he had her balanced, he reached out for the two year old that was staring at him with wide eyes.
“Tall!” Ariel said, staring up at him.
Alec laughed and took her from Magnus, cradling her against his hip. “Tall is right. We’re both tall. If you eat your dinner, I might even let you ride my shoulders later.” By the wide-eyed glee on her face, he figured that was the right offer. “Now we’re going to go make a room for you, okay?”
Magnus smiled at him and turned back to Christopher. “Stay here with Jace and your brother, okay? I’ll be right back.”
Christopher nodded, frowning, pressing closer to Jace.
Magnus turned his attention to the young boy holding his son and raised both of his eyebrows, noting the correct positioning of his hands the way he kept Max’s head supported. “You take care of my son, you understand?”
The boy nodded, his eyes wide, glancing from the baby and back up to the High Warlock.
Alec watched Magnus stride towards Max’s room. “I’d maybe put Maria and Ariel in with Max, at least for now. That way we only have one baby monitor. And a room for Christopher and a room for...” he glanced the way of the young boy who stared down at the floor. “Our other guest,” he finished when no name was prompted.
“All right,” Magnus agreed, closing his eyes as he hands started to glow blue.
~!~
It wasn’t until after dinner, when they started getting all of the kids settled, that Alec figured out what the problem was with the eldest of the warlock siblings. He clenched his eyes shut and looked towards the ceiling. He would have been six. Old enough to name the rest of them.
“Alec?” Magnus asked, coming around the corner to lean against him. “Are you all right?”
“I figured something out,” Alec said, turning back towards the kitchen where one last warlock was sitting, sullenly pushing his macaroni and cheese around on his plate. He stepped forward and sat down near the boy, keeping enough space between them so he didn’t feel like someone was hovering. “Do you want something else?”
The boy shook his head, frowning, blinking hard. “Why are you being so nice?”
“I don’t make it a habit to be mean to children,” Alec said, keeping his voice mild.
“The rest of the shadowhunters were,” he said. “Cept that blonde guy. He was okay.”
Alec sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’m glad Jace was nice. He’s my younger brother. I’m sorry that the rest of them were mean. If you tell me who the others are, I’ll speak to them. You shouldn’t have been treated that way.”
The boy scoffed, rolling his eyes. “It’s not like you can do anything about it. Don’t bother.”
Alec raised his eyebrows. “You sure about that?”
“Of course I am,” the boy said. “They’re just big bullies.”
Alec was quiet as he watched the boy hunch his shoulders. “You’re right,” he agreed, meeting the young warlock’s eyes when they flew up to his. “We’re still learning to be better. That takes time. But I’m working very, very hard to make that happen. If you can, I would like you to tell me so I can talk to those shadowhunters, because they should know better.”
“What are you, their boss or something?”
“Well,” Alec said with a smile. “I am the Inquisitor. So yes, effectively, I am the boss of almost every shadowhunter in the world.”
The boy’s eyes widened in shock. “You are?”
Alec chuckled. “Yeah.”
The boy frowned and nodded. “I, I can tell you who. Maybe.”
“I’d like that,” Alec said softly. “Can I ask you a question?”
“I don’t know, can you?” he snapped back, glaring at his macaroni.
Alec snickered, unable to keep from smiling. “I deserved that, but it’s been a bit of a long day. I want to know if you won’t tell us your name because you don’t have one?” By the way his shoulders immediately crumpled inward and his face fell, Alec knew he’d guessed right. “You made sure your siblings all had names, but-”
He shrugged. “No one ever bothered giving me one.”
Alec hummed and nodded. “Do you know that most warlocks pick their own names when they get old enough?”
The boys eyes were wide and he stared at Alec in shock. “They do?”
“They absolutely do,” Magnus said, from where he was watching in the doorway, meeting the boy’s eyes when they flew over to him. “Any name you want. Magnus Bane was hardly the name I was born with.”
Alec smiled as Magnus walked closer and slid into the seat next to the boy.
Magnus looked over at him, smiling. “I’ve been going by this name for a few centuries now, and it is decidedly the name I prefer, but it is not the name my mother called me. Or the one my demonic father called me. It’s a name I picked with the help of a friend.”
Alec slid out of the chair carefully and shot Magnus a smile as he headed towards the rooms where the rest of the kids were, wanting to take his own turn checking in on them. As he was leaving the kitchen, he heard a small, hesitant voice.
“Would...would you help me pick mine?”
Alec stopped in the hallway and took a second to breathe through the hesitant fear and hope in his voice. When Magnus responded in the affirmative, promising a few different ways they could go about it, Alec blinked away a few tears and turned back towards the rooms.
~!~
The next morning, as Alec was flipping the last few pancakes for the amusement of a hungry crowd, Alec watched Magnus walk in with a smug smile on his face. He grinned and leaned into the kiss Magnus offered him. “What has you so smug?”
Alec reached out and caught a spoon as it as thrown towards him by Christopher and he raised both his eyebrows, pointing the spatula at him. “Don’t make me take away your extra syrup privileges,” he said with a grin, sliding the spoon back towards him. The boy giggled and nodded, sticking his tongue out.
“You’ll see,” Magnus said, moving over to where Maria and Max were sitting side by side in their bouncy seats. “Good morning, my darlings, how are you both?”
“Um, Mr. Alec?”
Alec flipped the last pancake and turned the stove off, crouching down in front of the last of their missing crowd of mini warlocks. “You can just call me Alec,” he said, keeping his voice soft.
“A-and, you can call me Stefan,” he said, straightening his shoulders and raising his chin.
“Stefan, huh?” Alec asked, holding out his hand with a smile, waiting. It took him a minute to realize that he wanted to shake hands, but once he did, he gave a small, steady bob of their hands between them. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Stefan.”
“Y-yeah,” Stefan said, starting to smile. “Yeah, it is.”
I feel like magnus and Alec are the both the parents the freak out when their kid is injured. With Magnus’s entire childhood and Alec’s training I think they both had childhoods that were too rough and full of too many hard falls. If Magnus can heal scraped knees with a wave of hand and a kiss and his kid isn’t hurt? Who’s gonna stop him. They both are absolutely awful with tears especially cause they know they can help
i know??? they’re both calm if a kid falls and gets a bump or a scrape or (gasp) a broken bone but like inside it’s the worst. but yeah these kids don’t know anything about bandaids and scabs bc magnus just fixes them right up until they claim they’re too big for that.
Characters: Alec Lightwood, Magnus Bane, Max Lightwood-Bane
Word Count: 474 (short)
Prompt: Pregnant!Magnus by Anonymous
Summary: Magnus has a hard time bonding during his pregnancy.
A/N: Sorry, it’s quite short but feel free to request anything else!
Magnus didn't think that Alec realised that it was Magnus' skin he pressed into whenever he poked his stomach. Not to mention that his skin was stretched and sore. Each prod burned but he couldn't bring himself to care when a foot came to meet the finger and Alec lit up, sending his wondrous gaze to Magnus. He smiled softly back, running his fingers through sun-warmed curls. Magnus was reclined on the sofa, surrounded by miles of pillows propping up various parts of his body and Alec hovered above his stomach, Magnus' toes snug and warm under Alec's thighs. Slights of sun shone through the supposedly closed curtains and haloed Alec.
"Do you think he knows my voice?"
"Of course, Alexander. You never stop talking to him.”
Alec then leans down and presses a kiss right next to Magnus' protruding bell button. Magnus suddenly finds it all a little overwhelming. How easily Alec fell in love with their child was fascinating and guilt inducing all in one turn. That instant connection has sprouted feelings of jealousy in Magnus. He was happy, beyond happy, but he was yet to feel the click of a connection between him and his unborn son.
Alec had, from day one, spent hours speaking into Magnus' growing bump with tales of their lives and promises of a better world for the first ever Lightwood-Bane, all of which were underlined with messages of unconditional love. This pregnancy had not been expected and maybe that's what Magnus blames for the lack of a bond. He had no chance to fantasise about parenthood before his body started to sabotage him. All he saw was the bloating and the cramps and the god-awful state that his feet were most definitely in.
"He needs to know how much I love him before he sees my face. It might soften the blow." Alec jokes, smiling in the way that only he could. Magnus can't help but to return the smile, feeling like he has all the wonders of the world draped over his legs.
---
No amount of preparation could prepare Magnus for the sudden flow of love. It was two whole months after Max was born that Magnus bonded with him. Relief flooded him.
He loved Max, of course he did, but Max was new and fresh and it scared Magnus in the same way that Alec had scared him in the beginning. So precious and innocent and Magnus was going to tarnish it. But, alas, Max had smiled. Gummy and wide at Magnus' frantic, ring adorned hand. Looking around desperately for a wipe seemed like the least important thing in the world because a tiny blue Alec had just smiled at him for the first time.
There was no ridding Max of his innocence, the same way that there was no ridding Alec of his.
Ok so for the Alec bday stuff: I recently re-watched Titanic and it gave me an idea: painter Alec who draws Magnus “like one of his French girls”. 👀
Here goes! Thank you for the amazing prompt, and holy SHIT this got a bit long, but I loved it!
Any errors are attributed to this being written quick as hell, it’ll be cleaned up when I post it to AO3 later!

“You’re very talented, Alexander,” Magnus said, flipping through the sketch pad, staring at the detailed charcoal drawings of all different sorts of people. His breath caught at the sight of a nude portrait and he flicked his eyes up.
Alec smiled faintly, looking at the picture. “They always loved when I would draw them, because I drew them, I didn’t try to…” he trailed off and offered a shrug, staring down at the picture Magnus had paused at. “Hide their imperfections or who they were.”
“She’s beautiful,” Magnus whispered, his fingers trailing over the edge of the paper before he flipped to the next page. This time it was a man and his heart started to pound. He could see the care, the adoration in each of those brush strokes. “Who is this?”
Alec studied the picture for a long time before giving a helpless smile and shrug. “My instructor. He would often pose for us, as it fed his vanity.”
Magnus snorted and glanced up at Alec. “You liked him. I can tell.”
Alec opened his mouth and frowned before looking back down at the paper.
“It’s all right Alexander, you don’t have to explain anything,” Magnus said, adjusting his cravat, studying the artist.
“In the French, ah, art community,” Alec started, flipping the page to show another man, posing in the nude. “It’s much more acceptable to, look. Appreciate. And…”
Magnus raised both his eyebrows. “Do more than appreciate?”
Alec shrugged and nodded, reaching out to take his sketchbook back as Magnus flipped to a blank page. “It is one thing I will miss.”
Magnus looked down to the notebook and back up to Alec, his breath catching at the look in those hazel eyes. It was impossible to tear his gaze away. “Would you draw me?”
Alec blinked. “What?”
Magnus grinned. “I’d even commission you. What is your going rate, Mr. Lightwood? I would of course want to pay you for your time.”
“I’d draw you for free, for the honor of drawing you,” Alec said, his voice soft.
Magnus felt the thrill of that quiet certainty all the way up his spine. “Would you draw me like one of them?” He asked, nodding towards the sketch book.
“Like…?” Alec trailed off, confused.
“Like one of your sketches from France. Like your instructor?”
Alec’s breath caught. “You want-“
“Yes,” Magnus interrupted, unable to look away from the dark desire swimming in Alexander’s eyes. “Will you?”
Alec nodded, swallowing hard, his fingers already itching to hold a piece of charcoal, to trace the line of Magnus’ jaw, his shoulders, to immortalize him the only way he knew how. He was timeless beauty, and deserved to have that depicted to the best of his ability.
“Then I’ll go get ready,” Magnus said, stepping in close to Alec, glancing up at him through his lashes. He brushed his fingertips along Alexander’s jacket and smiled faintly. “Don’t go anywhere?”
“I’ll be right here,” Alec promised, his voice soft and certain.
Magnus stepped away and into the rest of the suite and Alec fell into one of the overly comfy chairs, his eyes darting around the room, taking in lights and the best way to position Magnus for the drawing he wanted. In a moment, he had one of the couches moved to best take advantage of the lights by the fireplace. His skin would glow golden under the lights.
“Alexander?”
Alec looked up, and his breath caught in his chest. Magnus was standing there, clad in nothing more than a black silk robe. His whole face felt red and he was reminded that Magnus was so impossibly beautiful, and that he deserved the world from someone who could give it to him. “Yeah?”
“Ready for me?” Magnus asked, raising an eyebrow.
Alec swallowed again, his heart pounding. How could he ever be ready for something like this?
Magnus smiles and headed towards the couch, running his fingers over the back of it. “Do you want me reclining?”
“Yes,” Alec said, nodding as his eyes dropped to the couch.
Magnus hummed and undid the belt on his robe, letting it fall off his shoulders and to the floor as he walked around the end of the couch, before settling into it. “How do you want me?”
Alec bit down the answer that was too ready to come to his lips. Far too ready. He took a deep breath and approached Magnus, reaching out to move an arm into a better position. Magnus’ skin was smooth and so much softer than he had anticipated. After that, the briefest touch to his hips to turn towards the light source and his breath caught, getting lost staring.
“Are,” Alec’s voice was hoarse and he cleared his throat. “Are you comfy?”
“Yes,” Magnus whispered, his voice just as rough. Alec’s eyes felt like a physical touch like this, raking over his entire body.
“Okay,” Alec nodded, moving to the seat he’d made for himself, picking up the sketch pad and collection of charcoal pieces he’d brought with him. He looked from the paper to Magnus again, his eyes tracing the planes of his body. It almost pained him to look and be unable to touch.
Magnus enjoyed being naked whenever the opportunity arose, but he had never been stripped so bare by someone’s gaze before. Alec’s eyes on him were intent and focused, trailing along his body in steady motions as his fingers started to move across the paper.
He didn’t know how long it had been, but as Alec focused, his skin grew hot and well, Magnus was only human. He knew he was bound to react, especially when he saw the blush crawling up Alexander’s cheeks. “If it makes you uncomfortable, I can cover-“
“No,” Alec interrupted, his eyes wide. His blushed darkened, but he cleared his throat. “Doesn’t...doesn’t make me uncomfortable.”
Magnus gave a rueful smile and relaxed again. “I’m sure you’re used to it.” The reminder was a dart to his heart. Many had been the focus of his level of appreciation before. Had maybe even acted on it.
Alec blinked and paused, lifting the charcoal from the paper. “Used to it?”
“People, ah, having a physical reaction. To you drawing them,” Magnus said, giving his hand a wave before returning it to the former position.
“Oh.”
When Alec didn’t add anything more, Magnus frowned a little and studied the artist. Alec’s shoulders were tense, but that didn’t make any sense. “You’re beautiful, you know. You should be here, not me,” Magnus said.
Alec gave a startled laugh. “I could never hold a candle to someone like you, Magnus.”
“Hm,” Magnus responded. “I have heard that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So perhaps you will have to trust me.”
Alec’s eyes jumped to Magnus and his breath caught. His eyes were almost golden in the firelight. He was so breathtaking his chest ached with it. “You are the most beautiful man I have ever seen my life.”
Magnus raised his eyebrows. “Have you see many naked men?”
Alec paused in his sketching and he offered a smile. “I am an artist, Magnus. I was an art student first.”
In hindsight that had been a stupid question. But Alec didn’t seem to have minded. “I am hardly-“
“You are,” Alec interrupted. “Every muscle, every slope and contour of your body? If you were not sitting here with me, I would think you a master’s work, come to life.”
Magnus’ breath caught. “Alexander.”
Alec’s eyes flicked up as his hands began moving again, focusing on him. “It’s the truth.”
Magnus fell quiet as the sound of sketching filled the parlor again, Alec’s eyes intent on his as the fire cackled lazily and the tension between them grew steadily. It was enough to lull him into a doze and it wasn’t until he heard Alec snap his charcoal case shut did he realize that he was down. Magnus sat up in a rush.
“Do you want to see?” Alec asked, biting on his lip as he studied the picture again.
Magnus lit up and was off the couch in a second, striding towards Alec. “What kind of a question is that, of course I want to see, Alexander!”
Alec waited for Magnus before he turned the sketch pad towards him.
Magnus froze, his eyes wide as he stared at the picture. He didn’t, he didn’t look like that. If he thought Alec’s portrait of his instructor had been drawn with emotion, it didn’t hold a candle to what he was staring at.
“Is it okay?” Alec asked, glancing at Magnus, who still hadn’t reacted.
“Alexander,” Magnus announced, turning to him. “I am going to kiss you now.”
Alec sucked in a hard breath, staring at Magnus with wide eyes. “I, you are?”
“Yes,” Magnus said, drifting closer, his fingertips against Alec’s jaw. “Unless you tell me not to.”
Alec swallowed and stared into eyes flickering gold once again. “No one, no one else has ever, uh, ever reacted when I drew them.”
Magnus breathed out slowly, swaying closer. “No?”
“No,” Alec shook his head. “But I wanted you to,” he whispered.
The admission was heady. Magnus wrapped his arms around Alexander’s shoulders and pulled him in for a kiss. It was more than enough for now.

BONUS SCENE BECAUSE I DEMAND HAPPY ENDINGS DAMMIT
~!~
“Women and children only, sir,” the porter said, frowning at Magnus.
Magnus looked to Camille who had already strode past him and to the lifeboat that was barely half full. His heart stopped. “Camille-“
“You heard him, Magnus. Be brave for me, darling?” Camille called, not bothering to look over her shoulder.
Magnus felt his heart stop in his chest and he stared at her. She didn’t look back at him as she climbed into the life boat, settling her mink coat more comfortably around her shoulders. He watched the boat be lowered, but not once did she look back.
He turned back to the deck, the faint strains of music catching him by surprise as he wandered through the disbelieving crowds. Be brave. His fingers twitched and he looked around the crowd, searching desperately for a tall figure he knew he wouldn’t see. Alec would probably be helping all of the women and children into the boats. Alec would be brave. He didn’t know how to be brave. Not anymore.
“Magnus!!”
Alec’s voice had him spinning around in a second, his eyes wide. “Alec!”
“Magnus, there you are, I’ve been looking everywhere for you!” Alec growled, grabbing Magnus’ hand, a toddler in his arms, and another boy holding onto his free hand. “Come on!”
Dozens of questions on his lips were yanked away as Alec pulled the three of them towards the other side of the boat, shouldering past bewildered first class passengers until they were in line for a life boat and Magnus shook himself out of his daze. Alec had come for him.
“Alec, I, we-“
Alec turned to him and silenced him with a look and knelt down in front of the young boy. “Raphael? This is Magnus. We can trust him. Can you hold onto his hand so he can help you on the boat while I hold Max?”
Raphael straightened his shoulders and looked at the other man in the fancy suit. “Yes.” He held out his hand.
Magnus took it and immediately realized how cold the boys hands were. “Here,” he said, pulling his gloves out of his pocket, slipping them onto Raphael’s hands before picking him up. The boy was heavier than he looked, but by the way he immediately cuddled closer, he’d clearly needed the comfort. “I’ll keep you safe,” he promised.
“Women and children only!”
Alec grabbed Magnus’ hand again, yanking him forward, releasing it only once they were by the boarding gap. “We both have children. Let us on,” he demanded, his tone broking no argument.
Magnus was dazed as Alec was pulled on board, still cradling the toddler, no, Max, Alec had said his name was Max, close to his chest and then was extending a hand to him. He thought of Camille, walking away without a look, of his father waiting for him in New York, and the life waiting for him. But here was Alexander Lightwood, offering him everything he didn’t know he wanted or needed, and two boys in their arms who needed them.
Magnus took Alec’s hand and stepped into the life boat, curling in close to him, keeping the young boy in his arms safely. Alec’s smile was brilliant and Magnus wanted to kiss it, wanted to kiss him, every day for the rest of their lives.
He tightened his hold on the boy in his arms and his hand around Alec’s as the boat started to lower towards the inky water. Maybe he could be brave, as long as Alec was holding his hand.
“Alec,” Raphael asked, lifting his head from Magnus’ shoulder, biting his lip in fear as the boat jostled. “Is, is Magnus gonna stay with us?”
Alec smiled and leaned in, pressing his forehead against Raphael’s. “That’s up to him. I certainly want him to.”
Magnus felt his heart constrict and he tightened his arms around the young boy. “I’m not only going to do that,” Magnus whispered, his voice soft. “I’m going to spoil the three of you for the rest of my life.”
Alec swallowed and met Magnus’ eyes, the hope and emotion there catching him by surprise. “Magnus, when I said I couldn’t give up my life-“
“You were talking about these two, weren’t you?” Magnus asked, looking down at the Max in Alec’s arms and then to the boy trying to crawl into his dinner jacket.
Alec hesitated and then nodded.
Magnus thought about the man who had saved his life so many times over the past few days and pressed his face to Alec’s shoulder, inhaling shakily. He’d come so close to losing this, losing the possibility of a family he had always wanted. “How about the opposite?”
Alec blinked, tightening his hand on Magnus’. “You mean?”
“Well,” Magnus started, his stomach lurching as the boat started to pull away from the Titanic. “I think it’s time I started living for myself. Just like you said. And, this,” he added, his eyes darting between Alec, Max, and Raphael. “Is the life I want to live. With, with you.”
The quick, desperate kiss from Alec, even in the face of tragedy around them, was everything. Alec had rescued him, once again.

~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!
Being a parent was everything he ever could have wanted and more, complete with sleeplessness, but Alec didn’t, he couldn’t regret it. Even after the end of a fourteen hour day when all he wanted to do was sleep, especially since Magnus had to stay out late for a client in Japan, and wasn’t expected home for at least another four or five hours.
Which is why, when the shy mumble of “Daddy?” from the doorway came, he sat bolt upright in bed, his eyes flying to Max, who was somehow out of bed. “Max? Is everything okay?”
Alec threw off the covers, immediately walking over to where the Rafe and Max were standing in the doorway.
Max looked up at Rafe and gave him a poke in the cheek.
Alec raised his eyebrows and moved his attention from Max to Rafael. In an instant, he recognized the sign of Rafael’s nightmares and stepped closer to them, kneeling down in front of his boys. “Are you both okay?”
“Rafe is sad!” Max announced, wiggling in his arms, cuddling in closer to his big brother. “I told him cuddles with you and Papa are the best for sad nights.”
Alec gave a faint smile and reached out to touch Rafe on the arm. “Hey, Rafe?”
That seemed to jolt him out of wherever his mind had gone to and his eyes widened and he took a step back. “I’m sorry, I know you’re tired, but Max insisted and said he was gonna cry and I didn’t want to wake you and-”
“Hey, no, no,” Alec soothed, reaching out to pull both of his boys in close. “Rafe, you’re always allowed to wake me, I don’t care how tired I am.”
Rafe bit down on his lip and hugged Max a little tighter. “I had a nightmare.”
Alec nodded, reaching out to comb his fingers through Rafael’s hair slowly. “Do you want to come curl up with me in our bed?”
Rafe glanced at the bed behind him and nodded slowly. “Is that, you won’t-”
“Nope!” Max said, bouncing excitedly. “Papa loves cuddling even more than Daddy! When he gets back, he’ll be excited”
Alec smiled and kissed Max on the top of the head. “That’s right, he loves cuddling both of his boys. Now come on, let’s get you both tucked in.”
Alec was relieved when Rafe let himself be tugged towards the bed and tucked into the middle, Max between the both of them, already starting to doze off again. “Do you need to talk about it?”
Rafael shook his head. “In the morning, maybe?”
“Okay,” Alec said, keeping his voice quiet and gentle, reaching out to rub Rafe’s back gently, until he started to relax again. “We’re here, and we’re not going to let anything happen to you.”
Rafe nodded again, leaning in closer to Alec. “Thanks Dad,” he whispered, reaching out to tangle his fingers in Alec’s shirt, his other arm being used as a stuffed animal by Max.
Alec smiled and pressed another kiss to Rafe’s forehead, swiftly following one to Max’s. “You’re welcome. Now get some sleep. Papa will be home soon, and I promise he’ll make sure to cuddle you even more.”
“Okay,” Rafael whispered, closing his eyes, taking a deep breath.
Alec forced himself to stay awake until he saw Rafael’s face go slack in sleep, both of the boys relaxing. He blinked slowly, a yawn escaping him as he let his head fall back onto his pillow, hoping that Magnus was going to be home soon. Only way this could be better.
~!~
Magnus was ready to fall face first on his bed and not move for at least eight hours. He and Alexander had the morning off, and they were going to take advantage of it. Breakfast for the boys, and then relaxing for at least a couple of hours.
He stepped into the doorway of their bedroom and stopped, taking in the sight of Alec, Max and Rafael curled together on the bed. Rafe was clinging to Alec’s shirt, and Max was sprawled between the both of them, quiet snores escaping him, just like his Dad.
Magnus fought the urge to laugh and quickly changed into his pajamas before crawling into bed behind Rafael. The boy was awake in an instant, but Magnus was quick to give him a hug. “Just me. You okay?”
Rafe nodded, yawning. “Nightmare.”
“We’ll talk about it in the morning,” Magnus promised, giving him another hug. “In the meantime, we both need some sleep.”
“Yeah,” Rafe agreed, closing his eyes as he sagged back into Magnus, relaxing fully. With both his Dad and Papa here, he was safe, he didn’t need to worry anymore. They’d proved that to him.
Alec sees aspider and hides behind Max, Rafael doesn't let him live it down.
THERE IS NOT A WORLD IN WHICH I DO NOT FIND THIS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING ADORABLE, OKAY?
Also I aged them up a tad FOR ADDITIONAL HILARITY - Rafe is 10 in this and Max is 8.
~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~
Rafael poured himself another glass of juice and frowned at the glass, carefully picking it up off of the counter, sipping it when all of the sudden his Dad shouted in fear. He dropped his glass and raced for the weapons rack by the front door. He grabbed the small Seraph dagger that Papa didn’t know Dad had been teaching him to use and ran for the balcony.
“Dad!”
Alec scrambled behind Max, his whole body shuddering as he brushed frantically at his clothes. “Max! Come on, don’t play!”
Rafael blinked in confusion, the dagger held tight in his fist as he looked around for whatever had made his Dad shout.
“I need to see it to disappear it like Papa!” Max said with a pout, huffing at his Dad. “It wasn’t even that big!”
“What…what’s going on?” he asked, dropping the dagger down to his side.
Max huffed and put his hands on his hips. “I don’t see it Daddy.”
“It was on me!” Alec said, shuddering again, huddling behind Max, his eyes narrowed on the couch across from him.
Max turned to give his Dad an exasperated look. “And if you hadn’t done your best “Uncle Jace around Ducks” impression, I would have disappeared it already!”
Rafe cleared his throat, glad when both his Dad and Max looked at him. He flushed when Alec looked at the knife, then him in confusion. “You sounded scared, Dad, I thought something was…you know. Wrong.”
Alec melted, relaxing and coming out from behind Max. “Oh, Rafe, everything is fine, we’re both okay, I prom-FUCK! MAX!” Alec shouted, leaping behind Max as soon as he saw the spider crawling out from the chair. “There!”
“Got him!” Max said with a quick wave of his fingers, the spider disappearing to a nearby park. He smiled. “There!”
Alec sagged in relief, exhaling hard. “Thank god.”
“Wait a second,” Rafe said, looking between where the spider had been and his Dad. “Are you…”
Alec’s eyes widened. “No! Definitely not!”
Max snickered. “Dad is terrified of spiders. Papa and I have to disappear them for him.”
“They’re evil and they come after me! They sense my fear, I swear!” Alec protested, glaring at Max.
“So let me get this straight,” Rafe said, the rest of the tension draining from his shoulders. “My Dad, one of the most badass-”
“Don’t swear,” Alec muttered, even though Rafe ignored him with a roll of his eyes.
“-Shadowhunters to ever exist…is scared of spiders?”
Alec sighed. “Uncle Jace is scared of ducks, and I’m scared of spiders. Everyone has a thing. Spiders are mine.”
Rafe stared at him, unimpressed. “You know you’re so much bigger than they are, right?”
“You know,” Alec said with a sigh, rubbing his hand through his hair. “If that level of logic worked, I would have stopped being scared of them a long time ago.”
Rafael couldn’t help grinning. “So I shouldn’t tell you about the spider that just landed in your hair?”
Alec shrieked and immediately ruffled his hair violently, making him look like he had been through a hurricane.
Rafael laughed so hard he couldn’t stay on his feet, even after he managed to tell his Dad he’d been joking. He was spending all of his allowance money on fake spiders this halloween. Every single cent.
Alec babysitting Max and Madzie by himself and narrowly avoids burning the loft up in flames.
So I tried to figure out how I wanted to make this work for DAYS and I finally got the inspiration for it!
~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~
"In my defense!" Alec shouted, ducking under the wave of blue flames that didn't actually burn anything. "I didn't see the harm in it initially!"
"Didn't see the harm?!" Magnus shouted back to him. "Just because the loft and you aren't on fire doesn't mean it isn't actual fire!"
"You can see how there might have been some mild confusion considering!"
Alec slammed the door shut and took a second to breathe, looking up at the flames surrounding the entire loft, flames that Madzie and Max had spent hours playing with. How the hell he was he supposed to know that it was real fire and that the hallway outside the front door was nearly impassable due to heat as a result?
He turned and rushed back towards the kitchen where both of the kids were tossing flames back and forth to each other instead of eating lunch and forced himself to take a deep breath, even as some of the flames wrapped around him, giving him a hug. The last thing the kids needed to see was him panicking, but they definitely needed to put the fire out. Now.
"Madzie, Max?" Alec called, drawing both of their attention. They smiled at him.
"It's time to put the fire out," he said, looking up at the flames crawling across the ceiling. "It got a little bit out of control, and it's hurting the outside of the building."
Madzie's eyes grew wide and she looked up in horror. "It's hurting things?"
"It hurt?" Max said, his big eyes filling with tears as the ball of fire in his hands was immediately extinguished.
"No one is hurt," Alec said, reaching out to the both of them, putting one hand on Max's head and another on Madzie's. "But Magnus can't get home. The hallway is too hot, and it's not safe for him to portal into the loft. He tried."
Their big eyes turned to him and with a wave of both of their arms, the fire was gone, leaving the room in a rush of wind. Alec sagged in relief and wrapped them both up in a hug. A second later, Magnus was stepping into the kitchen, his clothes still smoking faintly.
"Magnus!" Madzie shouted, squirming out of Alec's arms, making a beeline for him, tears already streaking down her cheeks. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to make it hurt, was just trying to, to do an 'llusion, and it wasn't supposed to hurt anyone!"
Max buried his face in Alec's shoulder and started to cry, clenching his hands in Alec's shirt. "We're sorry, Daddy."
"I know you are," Alec said, his voice soft. "It's okay. No one was hurt, everything is okay, and Papa is here now, which means everything is going to be okay."
Magnus took a deep breath and nodded, wrapping his arms around Madzie before he picked her up. "It wasn't quite an illusion. It was real fire, you just spelled it so it wouldn't hurt the things you wanted to keep safe. You did a very, very good job with that. I'll start teaching you how to make illusions soon."
Madzie nodded, her eyes scrunched shut, biting down on her lip. "Are you mad at me?"
Magnus shook his head and tracked Alec as he walked across the kitchen, murmuring softly to Max. "No, not at all sweetpea. I was scared. I thought someone had attacked you and I was afraid, because I couldn't get to you."
She looked up at him with wide eyes. "You were? But you're not scared of anything!"
Magnus wanted to laugh at the idea that he wasn't scared of anything, when three of the most important people in his life had been in danger and he had nearly been beside himself with terror. "I get very scared when people I love are in danger, and that includes the three of you. Alec does too."
Madzie considered this and nodded again, resting her head against his neck. "I'm sorry we scared you."
"It's okay sweetpea. I promise it's all right," Magnus said, resting his hip against the counter. "Why don't you tell me what else you got up to today with Alec and I'll see what we can do about playing with some illusions later, hm?"
Madzie lit up and Magnus lost himself in listening to the stories they'd drawn and the games that Alec had played with them earlier. When Alec made his way back over to them, Max was asleep against his chest, his fingers still tangled in the worn shirt he was wearing.
"Alec," Madzie said, interrupting herself. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare Magnus, and everyone."
"Hey," Alec said, leaning over to press a kiss to the top of her head. "No one was hurt, and the flames are gone now. Everything is okay. Sometimes learning means getting a little bit scared, but we're all okay, and that is what matters. Now, how about finishing lunch, and we'll see if we can convince Magnus to play Sharks and Minnows while I put Max down for a nap. Sound good?"
Madzie gave a firm nod, looking back towards where she had half a sandwich waiting. "Okay!"
