One of my favorite oddly specific tropes, are the main character (or characters) being raised by someone who was close to their parents
Whether it's aunts, uncles, God mothers, God fathers or just close friends of the character's parents, it will forever pull on my heartstrings. The parents may miss the friends and/or family they once had, but a part of that loved one still lives on in that kid.
They go the extra mile, loving and adoring that child as their own.
Because that's not only what the parents would have wanted, it's what they feel and know in their heart.
It’s time I said it.
I hate the trope where a dead dad is treated like a dead beat dad. No he’s not a dead beat for literally dying when you where young. Same for moms too since I’ve seen that. Like I just hate how dumb this trope is. It sucks especially when the parent died saving someone or some other noble/heroic way and the kid is like “they shouldn’t have been a hero they should have come home” like you are 15 you should understand the situation enough to not act like you were neglected or that they died on purpose. Like I know it’s a basic trope I just find so dumb when it’s a teen because sure an 8 year old has different perspectives than a teen. Like sure be angry about and at first be angry at the parent, but after a couple of years of thinking; if it happened when they where a baby or something; then it’s not hard for them to simply be angry at it happening rather than the dead parent. Even fandomwise I hate when people act/joke as if the parent dying early in the kid’s life was a choice or “avoiding responsibility” when them dying probably wasn’t their choice. It’s more annoying when in universe than as a dumb fandom thing though.
Feel free to add any addition you want.
I’ve never experienced this because my dads great but shit fictional dads who don’t have any time for their children but then go on to love and protect a child that’s not even theirs whilst being a terrible parent to their actual child drive me crazy and it’s even worse if their bio child is still in their life.
Like I would genuinely lose my mind if it was me and it would be over for them.
Kid has a school function (play, concert, ceremony) and will be devastated if parent doesn't come
Mom-centered/single mom movies: Takes care of every issue keeping her from event; leaves work in the nick of time and waves to kid from the back.
Dad-centered/single dad movies: Most likely just remembered event that morning (or afternoon). Loses track of time. Misses event or comes in embarrassingly late.
LOOK MAN. IM 100% HERE FOR RELUCTANT GUARDIANS WHO ARE SUDDENLY THRUST INTO A POSITION OF PARENTHOOD DUE TO TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCES WHO DO THEIR BEST AND STEP UP TO THE PLATE TO TAKE CARE OF A CHILD
