The realisation you have as an adult that you NEVER understood half of your parents' jokes, because they were based on adverts you've never seen and music you've never heard about products you've never consumed, but you would demand they be told again and again as a child because children find absurdity deeply funny and the meaning was genuinely not important.
Me, in my late 30s: Wait, I have to Google something.
*Googles*
Huh, that's NOT funny.
It... it's a cigarette ad??
Grimm were here evidenced by all the claw marks in the floor and the ground. The child was shivering and still cried into their father's arms. It felt like their survival was a miracle until... Wait. Where is the mother? There was no sign of her yet and they were supposed to be home together for the night.
“Shhhh, shhh…hey sweetie, look up at me. C’mon, be brave like mama…C’mon..” Only now did Oran separate, and only enough to wipe the child’s face. “Where’s mama? Did she chase the monsters?”
"Surprise, daddy! I followed you to work!" The little girl charged towards Oran and leaped, expecting to be caught in his arms. "Also mommy just called your phone while you were away. She said my baby brother's coming!"
“I see that, a stór.” Secretly, he had been aware of her presence, but it was fun to let her sneak around. Catching her easily in his arms, he grinned, poking her on the cheek to tease. But his faux surprise melted into real surprise when she mentioned the phone call.
“She what? Shit..Don’t repeat that word sweetie. Okay, so..why don’t we go and meet them! I’ll get someone to cover me real quick while we go. C’mon, up you go.” Shifting her to where she could sit on his shoulders, he hurried out the door, calling for someone to sub for the rest of the day.
You hear your child sobbing from within the utterly destroyed house. The door was busted in, all the windows broken, and barely any furniture or owned object was where it was supposed to be. The child was in the master bedroom surrounded by broken things.
“What the hell?”
Not that he took any time to process the outside of the house, instead rushing inside, praying to whomever might actually exist that the worst hadn’t happened.
It was with relief that he slid to his knees beside his child, pulling them into a hug, even as he hushed them. “Hey, hey, daddy’s here. Daddy’s gonna make it better okay?”
