The Basilica Cathedral of Saint Denis, north of Paris - This is the birthplace of what is now called early Gothic art and architecture. Features such as cross-ribbed vaults, pointed arches, flying buttresses and rose windows were used here for the first time in Europe when the church was rebuilt in the 12th century. This became the inspiration for countless churches built in “the French style” as it was known until the 16th century.
