Who says Monday's have to suck...? #positivevibes #parismina #shamelessselfie #costarica #travelmore
Sunsets in Parismina... This photo pretty much sums up everything I have to say about this beautiful little village, thus far. In just the four days I have been here, the amount of beauty I have seen both in the physical aspect and from those who live here, goes beyond anything I can share in words.. Excited that I still have a week left here ❤️🐢🇨🇷#seaturtles #ivhq #maximocostarica #ASTOP #travelmore #volunteeroften #parismina #nofilter #nofilterneeded (at Barra De Parismina)

Parismina is nice, but again feels too contrived and touristy in comparison to the beautiful middle-of-nowheres we’ve been. We’ve been learning a lot about turtles, particularly leatherback turtles, which are the most common species here. We had a lecture from a representative from ASTOP (Asociacion Salvemos las Tortugas de Parismina - Association to Save the Turtles of Parismina). I had an image of a conservation society in my head that was very different from ASTOP. I was thinking nerdy scientists in field pants and floppy hats, maybe some youthful idealistic volunteers, working in a linoleum tiled workspace filled with scientific instruments and turtle food. However, this guy was in his shorts, Bob Marley, and dreads, and came with his fellow volunteer and her cute two year old. The program is based out of small town about a five minute boat ride from our lodgings. The guides showed us their turtle nursery - literally just a plot of filtered sand that I wouldn’t have noticed if it wasn’t pointed out to me - and they had no facilities whatsoever. The rest of the beach was littered with trash, broken glass, and bits of plastic. He regaled us with stories about him chasing after turtle poachers, who had guns and machetes, to save turtles taken for meat, and collecting turtle eggs and moving them to safe places in the beach by hiding them in his shirt so approaching poachers couldn’t steal them. That night, the two volunteers took us out to the beach to look for turtles. All other CIEE groups here have always seen a turtle. We walked for several miles along the beach in the dark, but we didn’t find any (I thought it was a pretty nice nighttime beach walk, but then again I wasn’t afraid that at any moment I might have explosive diarrhea like some of my classmates...).
