“Are you awake?” Well, even if Minnie hadn’t been, she certainly was now considering the fact that Jack had knocked on her door despite it being past two in the morning, far too late at night for a considerate person to be knocking. Not that he was considerate at the best of times, and it was clear from his expression that it was not the best of times, and from the way he went quiet for a moment after the question, uncharacteristically so, before looking down at the floor to speak again. “I didn’t .. wanna be alone.”

“Isn’t that just the fun of it though?” Jack pointed out as he paused, glancing back at Minnie from his position with one leg already out of the window. It was almost comical, really, the fact that she even seemed to be entertaining the idea of going along with his dumb decision - climbing out of the window and using the fire escape to get onto the roof. But he was bored, and he wasn’t going to question it, and besides. Drinking on the roof or smoking on the roof was just cooler. “It’s gonna be fine. Nobody’s gonna look at the roof,” he said dismissively, lifting his other leg out of the window and climbing out. “We’re gonna be fucking great.”
