Six. A secret organization that handled countless missions. Both loved and feared by many. It was easy to think the organization was run by robots. Everything always went smoothly and perfectly timed. However, the agents were very much human. They got hurt, they got scared, they argued, but for the most part, they got along, they were a little family. Today, however, was one of the few days some of them didn’t get along. More specifically, Jane and Parr.
Parr had been the girl in the chair. She told everyone what to do and when to do it. Which meant she basically controlled who would do what. Very rarely did they have any problems. Parr knew what her teammates were good at and what they weren’t good at. However, as of late there had been a budding problem. Jane was starting to realize she was being placed on the sidelines more and more. At first, it was reasonable, the first few missions didn’t require her skills. Then she kept having to sit out.
Again. And again. Eventually, Jane had got sick of it. Which was why she decided to confront her lover about it. Jane stood in front of Parr’s office door a few seconds. She knocked on the door boldly. “Parr, can we talk for a moment?” Jane slowly opened the door peaking inside. “It’s kinda important.”
Parr looked up from her laptop and smiled. “Of course, is something bothering you?” She closed her laptop giving Jane her full attention. Parr had very few soft spots and Jane was one of them. Of course, that had pros and cons, but the pros outweigh the cons more often than not.
Jane sat down in the chair in front of Parr’s desk. “Yes actually..it’s about my position on some of the recent missions..and the fact I basically don’t have one.” Jane watched as Parr’s face darken. “I mean, I know I don’t look strong but I’m just as much of an agent as anyone else is!” Jane frowned “I’m tired of being put on the sidelines.”
Parr sighed. “Jane, I know you want to be out on the field and all, but I think you’d be safer on the sidelines.” Parr bit her lip slightly. “I know it gets boring, but it’s what’s best for you.” Parr noticed a change in Jane’s face. She couldn’t tell what it was, but it wasn’t going to be good.
“I not some..some small child!” Jane knitted her brows together in frustration. “I’m not someone that needs to be protected, I can do that myself! I took the same classes you did, you know what I can do! I’m just as capable of you.” Jane could feel her anger rising. She didn’t like to yell, but it felt right. “I’m not just some..some damsel in distress that needs to be protected!”
Parr looked at Jane straight-faced. She knew getting emotional would just make things worse. “Jane, I understand, but you have to trust my decision.” Her brows knitted together as she bit her lip. Memories of the last mission that had gone wrong rushed through her head. The blood everywhere, god there was so much of it. Then the weak little smile Jane had forced before she went out cold. It was terrifying. The way Jane looked when she slept, almost dead. It was a hellish 3 months for Parr both mentally and physically.
Jane must have still been ranting while Parr was mental reliving her personal hell because suddenly she yelled was “Catherine, are you even listening to me?!” The amount of pure anger in Jane’s voice caused Parr to draw up. Jane’s features sorted seeing Parr shy away from her. “I’m sorry, I’m just frustrated.” Jane took a deep breath. “Please explain to me why you’re putting me on the sidelines.”
Parr reached across her desk and grabbed Jane’s hand. She ran her thumb over the knuckles. “Look, after you got shot…I was scared.” Jane placed her other hand on top of Parr’s and squeezed it slightly. “I don’t want to relive that, I don’t want /you/ or Kitty to have to relieve that.” Parr swallowed a lump in her throat. “I want to keep you safe. I want to keep my family safe. I can’t do that with you running off and getting hurt.” Parr could feel tears streaming down her face. “You, Mary, Kitty, and Edward mean a lot to me…I just need to keep this family whole.”
Jane bit her lip thinking. There was a lot to analyze. Yes, it did hurt that Parr thought Jane couldn’t protect herself, but she meant well obviously. It felt good knowing Parr was looking out for her. Then it dawned on Jane. Parr had considered Edward and Kitty a part of her family, but Edward and Kitty were Jane’s kids. “Parr, do you see me as something more than just a girlfriend?” The question was horribly timed and inappropriate to ask, but curiosity had gotten the better of Jane.
“I’d like to go further, but I can’t do that unless I manage to keep you safe.” Parr gently squeezed Jane’s hand. “I really want to, but I don’t think now is a good time, not with /him/ alive.” Parr paused, the longer she thought the more problems flooded into her head. “With us together, he’d have more reasons to come after Edward..it’s a big risk..” Parr’s calm facade had melted away at this point, the nervousness rising the surface.
Jane frowned. It hurt knowing that Parr kept herself so calculated. She wonders if they would’ve ever gotten together if Jane hadn’t made the first move. “You can’t just calculate your whole life. Catherine, your life isn’t all numbers and probabilities! You have to live and make mistakes! You’re a human, you’ll make mistakes and that’s ok! You miss so much information by not failing!"Jane had to admit, she was a little disappointed. She’d expect Parr of all people to know that.
Parr bit her lip as a number of emotions flooded through her. Jane was technically right. You didn’t really learn anything if you didn’t fail. Yet it didn’t make sense to fail if it could’ve been avoided. "Well, the numbers help me. I don’t want to lose anyone. If a few math equations keep everyone alive, then so be.” Parr’s voice was oddly assertive despite the fact she was actually scared. The idea of not knowing her chances made her uneasy. She couldn’t prepare herself if she didn’t have a chance.
“You’re always calculated, do something brash! Right now, I dare you!” Jane wasn’t one for dares, they were childish and people could get hurt. There was no way to tell what could happen, which is what Parr really needed. Something she couldn’t really predict. There was no real way to tell how’d she react, because Jane didn’t even know held she reacts.
Parr bit her lip. She looked around the room nervously. There were a lot of odd things she could do. Then she looked at her desk drawer. She quickly opened it and grabbed a small little box, now was a gold a time as any. It wasn’t as fancy as she’d wanted it to be, but it was now or never. She placed the little box in her pocket and stood up. Parr stood in front of Jane and took a deep breath.
Jane found the quick movement a little amusing. She didn’t think one small dare would send Parr into such a frenzy of panic. “You know, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you seem a little nervous.” Jane chuckled as Parr’s face began to heat up
Parr cleared her throat and got down on one knee. It was a chance that Jane would deny her, she didn’t how big or how small it was, but it was always a possibility. It was nerve-racking and scary. “Jane..” Parr took a deep breath before pulling out a small black box. She opened the box to reveal a small silver ring. It had a few diamonds on it. Looked pretty expensive and fragile.
“Jane Seymour, would you make me the happiest woman on earth and marry me?”
