A rare visitor

This snow apollo (Parnassius apollo) is a rare butterfly, and, therefore, a protected species here in Finland, and one of the largest too. I have seen it only twice now, once last year in passing, and yesterday, the 23rd of July, 2019, when it obliged me with posing for a couple of quick snaps while leisurely sipping the nectar.

To danske borgere fanget Apollosommerfugler som er fredet og på listen over truede dyr- og plantearter på Gjendebu på tirsdag. De var i besittelse av mellom 35 og 40 sommerfugler. Begge blir nå avhørt av politiet på stedet.

Translation: Two Danish citizens were capturing Apollo butterflies - which is a protected species and on the endangered species list - on Gjendebu Tuesday. They had between 35 and 40 butterflies. Both are currently being questioned by the police.

The butterfly in question is the Mountain Apollo (Parnassius apollo). It belongs to the sub-family Parnassiinae, also called Snow Apollos. The larvaes live on stonecrops, especially roseroot and white stonecrop. It used to be quite common in Southern Norway, but has declined since the 1920s. The reasons for its decline are uncertain, but are probably due to loss of habitat. The Moutain Apollo is common in areas with wildflowers.
