okay people on tiktok started looking up what a madras shirt is and only looked at the pattern and are now like “darry is wearing paul’s madras shirt the whole show except for the rumble” and i feel it is my civic duty as your local theater design and tech major to tell you that that is in fact false.

madras shirts are specifically cotton shirts, the fabric is closer to that of a linen. it’s delicate, it wrinkles easily, and it’s is very light. In addition to this, due to its lightness, one can assume that the person wearing it also has the means to afford a coat to keep them warm. madras shirts are typically characterized by a plaid pattern.

flannel, while also typically having a plaid pattern, is a much more durable fabric that is very heavy and doesn’t really wrinkle. in addition to this, flannels, when layered with other jackets that can be used year round, can serve as a cost efficient way to stay warm.

darry spends the show in a flannel, most likely to show that while he has the attitude and the ambition of a soc (sharing the plaid pattern), he is stuck in his position financially as a greaser (durable fabric).

sorry to those who thought that it was paul’s shirt the whole time, this isn’t me hating on that storyline or anything, just some information that does still contribute to darry’s character just in a different way
