Like many of us in the fandom I was devastated by the finale. No disrespect to anyone who enjoyed it, personally I did not, feeling betrayed by the end message. But I will try not to ramble too much and channel the rage and sadness into an alternative ending which, in my opinion, aligns more with the life-affirming message of the original story / season 1. Where OUR world deserves saving and it is precisely our differences and troubles that make us work together and make the existing world better by it. Not throw it away without connection to the old one because the magic is gone forever and never existed in the first place. What the magic system represents is exactly that no matter who we are and where we came from, we can make a difference if we try and cooperate and be open to each other. The whole point and humor of the original was that humans ALREADY HAD FREE WILL. That they are capable of everyday acts that are so much more evil or good that anything heaven or hell come up with. That's how Crowley earned his status and relative protection in hell: by pretending to be responsible for horrible human evil, while his own influence was actually minor inconveniences. And he got away with it for millennia!
(End of my rant, on with the plot!)
So in this version a bookshop full of blank books with the reality-altering power of writing and the "our miracles are stronger when we do them together because we love the world and each other"-love between Aziraphale and Crowley actually means something.
Angels and demons can decide for themselves what they want to do without God and Satan pushing them to battle and destruction by their propaganda.
Not shown: Muriel and Eric start a sort-of worker union, so the angels and demons who genuinely want to do office work and have fun with it are not exploited again.
Aziraphale and Crowley save THEIR world and retire, living in a cottage AS ANGEL AND DEMON. Far away from everyone to have some well-earned rest and peace and let no neighbors be bothered by the occasional occult phenomenon side-product when they enjoy themselves and close enough to keep an eye on humans as guardians of Earth to be part of a little community.
