How it started vs. How it’s going. The first photo I ever took at Drake was of me, a little 18 y/o, student athlete with a goal to do SOMETHING in mental health while on crutches after breaking my toe for doing something silly 😂. Fast forward, this fall I am returning to Drake as the Clinical Director for my alma master’s counseling center! In addition, I took a leap of faith, thank you to Kai for encouraging me, to apply to be on the board for the Iowa Mental Health Counseling Association and God blessed me again and I’ll be the President of the Board this fall as well. If you would’ve told me back then that within 2.5 years of getting my masters that I’d be taking on two of the biggest roles as a therapist while actively pushing the field of mental health out it’s historical comfort zone, I would’ve never imagined. Shoot, I still can’t imagine it TODAY, but what I know is I’m built for this. I get to grow professionally and help create systemic change. The best part is I got this far just still being my quirky, silly, and authentic self and Drake and IMHCA knew that and still wanted this young, Black, queer, woman to lead some big changes. This is definitely one of those “if you knew what I had to get through to get here” stories and a story of following God’s plan. I am forever grateful for the ways I have grown as a clinician thus far and the ways each and every adolescent I’ve served has helped me in growing and learning how to be my best and the amount of trust they gave me their healing. Forever honored. I look forward to seeing how much I THRIVE in both positions and the ways I’ll be invested in to keep this mission growing. Thank you to everyone that has believed and supported me thus far. I have big plans for both positions! Happy Independence Day. As you celebrate (safely!) Today, keep in mind the ideals written into the documents that led to the founding of this nation - the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Remember those ideals apply to all Americans, and since anyone in the world should be able to apply for citizenship in America, by extension, those ideals should apply to all of the people around the world. Consider how you are truly supporting those ideals, after all, those ideals are what this nation was founded upon. “I admit, it was a kneejerk reaction,” John shivered. We were both nearly naked and dripping wet. The dive I took into the frozen lake was an accident, and John did his best to rescue me. He had a conscience after all. It was his fault that I broke in, in the first place. So he pulled me out, brought me back to the mansion. The blanket I had on my shoulders started itching. I hoped his itched as well.

He gave me a crystal whiskey glass, liquid amber filling it two inches high. He smirked as I sniffed it. Bourbon. John shrugged. “Suit yourself,” he opened his hands to a broad gesture towards the library and the bar in front of him.

His blanket slit to the floor, exposing naked skin. His pale back showed marks and bruises, in different stages of healing. Green and yellow spots accompanied the new purple ones I had caused. Lines zigzagged across his shoulders, nape and lower back. So many scars…

I took a gulp. Warmth started to spread in my stomach. The smell of sulfur, smoke, polished wood and the bourbon mixed to a vivid impression of a gentleman’s salon night. “It smells of fire,” I told him.

He turned to me. “Yeah, it does. All these books are refugees.” Smiling at my confusion, he continued. “I tore them from burning piles.” His throaty laugh filled the room.

What a blessing today was. Another amazing time in worship at chapel then getting to meet two great champions of the faith (Nik & Ruth Ripken). Though so many differences there were also so many similarities in our story, most of which is our heart to get the gospel to the lost. Then i got to meet and dine with brother Kirk Overstreet from NAMB who i know will become a close friend and ally in our call to reach California for Jesus Christ. #partofsomethingbigger (at Gateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention)
