The Joker turns his chin, or it turns of its own accord, like a spasming tendon. Regardless: the slight motion is a point made.

"What, you think I ask these people to abandon their lives, their careers, their ideologies? Hm? Do you think these . . . innocent, modest people hear a few disorganized statements from a guy like me, a few little jokes, and decide overnight to turn to the dark side?" Wiggling fingers lined in purple leather. Spookyyy, says his wide, bottomless stare, but his voice doesn't.

"You got any idea what happens to the dreamers when their dreams die, Goldilocks? They corrode. And the thing about corrosion is it bleeds - keeps on going, spreading everywhere. Which is the point. See - me, I'm just a . . . messenger. Or a little footsoldier." Nods. Joker's eyes even glow, with the formulation of his rebuttal as it comes together. His very especial symphony. "I just spread what's already plain for everybody to see. If anything, you know . . . these people, yeah, these so-called innocents. . . . Well they were never really all that pure to begin with. Me; I just set them free."

Sound of the overhead entry/exit detector coming on. Red sound, red as its light and just as angry.

"You know," as he was closing a door that bore an uncanny similitude to the inside of a vault, "they told me I wasn't right to come in here alone. Said I would have to come with an armed escort - well-meaning, but incorrect, of course. I have all the clearances."

Dr. Jonathan Crane relaxed both hands around the handle of his metal briefcase, in front of his body. The expression he wore was one of transparent, nigh on blissful triumph. He almost looked peaceful.

"The Joker," he said, velveteen voice welcomed by claustrophobic walls in a little white box. "In the very conspicuous flesh." One table. Two chairs. Handcuffs - and the hands they held were, somehow, still smeared with paint. "You've been in Arkham eight hours, without a single incident or conflict with inmates, staff, or guards, and you've already set off a stir."

You could feel it. Step inside the premises and it was like the place itself had been reconfigured on a chemical equation of unease.

"I think they're more afraid of your inactivity than anything they've heard on Gotham News. Well," little smirk; coy shrug. "- so far."
