FIRST PASADENA STATE BANK

This 12-story bank building was designed by the Houston architectural firm of MacKie and Kamrath. Conceived in a high modernist style indebted to Frank Lloyd Wright, the building was, in 1962, and remains today, the only structure over three stories in the Houston suburb. In the 1960s, the building represented modernity and progress, making it a fitting backdrop for a Great Society campaign speech by Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
That will change tomorrow, 21 July 2019, when they First Pasadena State Bank will be demolished by implosion. A victim of failed mergers and negligent owners, this mid-century modern tower has been unused for 20 years, like the ghost mall and other boarded-up businesses nearby.
We read in disbelief of Renaissance popes and cardinals despoiling Roman monuments and of revolutionaries tearing down Gothic cathedrals, yet we do nothing as short-sighted city planners and greedy developers wantonly demolish our recent architectural history. Pasadena, Texas has one modernist skyscraper—tomorrow it will have none.
What survives of the kitchy, retro banks, offices buildings, department stores, movie theatres, sports stadiums and bridges of the mid-20th century will be the Forum of Trajan, the Pazzi Chapel, and the Invalides of the future. The painful lesson of Penn Station seems to have been entirely forgotten.
