So I've been playing path of exile lately, and have been enjoying it, but one thing started a train of thought in my head. The passive skill tree. For those that don't play Path of Exile, the skill tree is basically like the sphere grid from FFX.You start at X point on the grid, and every skill point you get lets you move along the grid. The difference is that every class shares the same tree. So, theoretically, you could take a, for instance, melee class and cast with him. It'd be highly inefficient and take a while to get revved up, but it works.
Buuut that's kind've the thing I wanted to talk about. Due to how the skill tree is designed, basically, playing along with your class is always the best option. All the nodes are there, you're (very slightly, in the dev's defense) leaning towards the class you start as (I think melee characters start with like, 10 more strength or something, which while not insignificant isn't a lot), and moving out of that skill tree specifically to get to another classes skill tree is... well wouldn't you just make one of that class is the thing? I mean sure there's the comedic effect of an enormous mountain of a man generic warrior dude casting spells like a wizard, but beyond these minor points, there just doesn't really seem to be a point.
It's billed as a big THING of the game, but you go out of the way for some keystone skills (big skills that fundamentally alter how you play the game and gear up), MABE, and that's about it. It's.... mostly there for the fun of it, and there's nothing wrong with that, I enjoy the system, it's leagues better then planning out generic skill trees, just because you have to look around and see what's nearby, sort've "learning the map" if you will, but that's about it. It makes builds more complex, and if that's what they were going for fine, like I said I'm fine with it and enjoy it, it just seems like it had a lot more potential.
Just some thoughts!
