their insecurities —  His own writing, especially the earlier works, and his deteriorating Romanian, though this is more so a shame than an insecurity. 

their ambitions —  To create and entertain. He couldn’t care less about the attention that writing gives him, but he has an insatiable urge to put forth his stories and beliefs into the world, and to explore his own abilities. He has no definite goal, other than to improve. (Though, now, his dreams and ambitions are stagnant)

what motivates them  —   At a time, it was his desire to create. Now, he is motivated by shame and grief.
