Last week our conservation staff in the bindery had a creative day of making paste papers. It is hard to not be jealous of all the work they get to do on a daily basis, but sometimes we get a chance to participate. With this project we had that opportunity. Who can say finger painting isn't allowed in the work place??

In 2014, Ruth Lightbourne, then Curator Rare Books and Fine Printing, posted to Tumblr a series of interesting decorated pastedowns and endpapers.

Two further examples were recently added when the Alexander Turnbull Library acquired a mixed set of volumes of Der Naturforscher, a natural science journal published in Halle, Germany, from 1774 to 1804. The specific volumes purchased relate to Captain Cook’s voyages to the Pacific region.

Present in two of the volumes were these rather fine examples of German decorated pastedowns and endpapers, which are contemporary with the dates of publication in both volumes (1774 and 1776) and went unrecorded in the bookseller’s catalogue. 

A nice discovery when the volumes were unpacked!

More on my UFO (un finished objects) quest. I used some of my paste papers to make tiny pamphlet books. Not quite happy with how the paste coated watercolor paper folded, it got tiny tears along the fold, but they will do just fine for my purposes. Inspired by, or perhaps just on the same wavelength as a couple of friends who just posted their beautiful bookmarks (waves at @synapopstudio and @gramsmaenglish :) ). I decided I had to do *something* with a few of my paste papers, so I had a cut and paste night while watching fake Wyoming on Netflix last night... After getting it ironed out, I'm a bit enamored with the purple on black.
