Do you associate a song with a character, or a mood, or even a chapter? How does that work?

It depends on the song! Sometimes I hear a song and it’s clearly a specific happening. “Castle” by Halsey is a good example of this, because it’s on the playlist and I already posted it as the song for chapter four. The chorus makes me think of Rey just showing up to the Supremacy in TLJ:

I’m headed straight for the castleThey’ve got the kingdom locked upAnd there’s an old man sitting on the throne that’s saying I should probably keep my pretty mouth shut

Which is all pretty on the nose, I think. The earlier line “Now my neck is open wide, begging for a fist around it” I relate more to TS in particular, for reasons.

But other songs are character-focused, relationship-focused, or just atmospheric. For your random song, I rolled “Drumming Song” by Florence + the Machine.

And that’s very much a TS-specific song in a relationship capacity! It’s Rey and Kylo and the overwhelming Force connection, in addition to desire in general. The singer clearly wants to be rid of this all-consuming feeling they don’t know what to do with, which is… apropos. And it’s also extremely atmospheric — Florence + the Machine’s albums are still some of my faves to write to. :)
