Double Self-Portrait
Patchwork Pillows - Part 3 of 3
Applique Pillow - Self-Portrait
What is more egotistical than putting yourself in your own work? An appliquéd self-portrait with embroidered hair, beard, and eyeglasses, of course! On the back is embroidered “John Mangiapane – portrait of the quilter as a young man -1981” {I was 26 years old at the time} James Joyce is probably rolling in his grave over that one!
There is an embroidered needle and thread in the picture, although the ‘quilt’ is preprinted fabric. I added the blue and orange Flying Geese border to make the pillow 14” square. The background is a random continuous line design. The back was divided into four sections with four different designs – cable, scallops, tulips, and diamonds. It is bound in maroon calico bias tape.
It was exhibited at many fairs and drew many chuckles from viewers.
This pillow was acquired by the International Quilt Study Center and Museum in 2015.
