It was spoken about for a while, months even, but it never sunk truly in that Geoff was leaving their gang to establish another one.
Matt and Gus have both said their good byes and good lucks Saturday night after a few drinks. Burnie was still sitting in Geoff’s apartment Monday morning.
He took it the hardest out of any of them.
It never helped that he concealed his feelings for the younger man.
“Y’know, my plane leaves in 3 hours,” Geoff casually told him as he settled his duffle bag near the door. Burnie stared at him from the sofa with his head leaning into his hand.
“I know,” Burnie replied.
“I’ll visit. People still owe me money,” Geoff told him. He sighed as pushed his hair out of his face. Geoff couldn’t understand why Burnie was being so difficult.
The ride to the airport was uncomfortably quiet. Burnie had insisted to be the one to drive him to the airport. Geoff stared out the window, looking up at the Texan sky. Clouds were coming in from the west and he realized that he forgot to check if his flight was delayed due to the weather.
“Matt told me to warn you about causing shit that will bite us in the ass,” Burnie broke the silence. Geoff chuckled. It was like Matt to say stuff like that.
“It’ll fucking bite me in the ass first,” he said. Burnie smiled.
Airports either brought happiness or sadness. It brought Burnie total devastation. It was time to let Geoff go.
“Your flight isn’t cancelled,” Burnie told him as he looked up a the screens. He wished that the weather would at least delay Geoff for a bit.
Geoff stared at the screen too, seeing that any flight heading out west wasn’t affected by the storm.
“Yup. Well, uhm, this is it,” Geoff broke the silence. They looked away from the screen and looked at each other. Burnie’s mouth was getting dry and he felt his hands sweat.
“Yeah, this is it,” Burnie repeated. His chest hurt from sheer amount of emotion that built up.
Geoff held out his hand for a handshake and Burnie took it. He shook it hard, trying to keep a smile.
“Thank you for all these years, Burns,” Geoff told him.
“Thank you, Ramsey,” he said with a cracking voice. He cleared his throat and let go of his hand. Geoff nodded as he walked away from Burnie, giving a little wave and smile. Burnie waved back.
Burnie watched him walk away until he couldn’t keep it in any longer.
“Hey! Geoff Ramsey!” he shouted. Geoff turned around to the sound of his name.
“I loved you!”
Geoff didn’t respond, he didn’t know how. He shook his head that he didn’t hear him and waved him goodbye one last time.
Burnie’s face was on fire as people glanced at him as they walked past. He waved back to Geoff before running out of the airport with a heavy heart.
