Someone asked me to sing something from Frozen. They originally asked for any Disney song, but “Mother Knows Best” is weirdly out of my voice range now even though it was in my range for my junior recital.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but can I be angry about the erasure of the romani and jewish backgrounds of the twins, but still enjoy their characters in aou? I didn't know about their heritage going in and after I saw the movie, I found out, but I'm having a hard time disliking them even knowing that fact.

Of course! Of course you can enjoy them. You can like problematic things and still be an awesome person! Let’s face it, almost all media is problematic in some way. If we only liked not problematic things, we wouldn’t have much.

There are some really great guides to being a fan of problematic things here and here and here. Basically it boils down to this: don’t talk over people who are pointing out it is problematic. Read what they say and realize it is problematic. And don’t try to make excuses for it (like for instance with the twins the favored excuse is that Fox owns Magneto but the twin’s mother is Romani and Fox doesn’t own her. They could have also been made Jewish/Romani without mentioning Magneto at all).

There are four mods on this blog and all four of us are HUGE fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dr. Horrible. I’m a big Cabin in the Woods fan. We all watched Dollhouse and Much Ado About Nothing. We love this stuff but we want better from someone calling himself a feminist. We want critical discussion and media literacy. We want truly feminist media. But until then, we will continue being fans of problematic things.

Thank you, that’s such a huge compliment :) Incest is really one of those things that can squick a person out, so when people give it a shot just because I wrote it and find that it actually kind of works I’m like, super flattered.
