Korea shaman song

In Korea,an ancient religion still exists based upon woman’s shamanic power. There,women still dance to call the spirits and to visit the spirit realm.Called mudang (dancer) or manshin (summoner of spirits),such women shamans participate in a tradition at least 2000 years old,descended from the pre-Buddhist,pre-Confucian religion of the Korean peninsula.

Many scholars believe that the ancient divinity of the mudang was a mountain goddess, the one who addresses the shaman in the song above. It is to the realm of this goddess that the shaman ascends when, in dancing rituals,she becomes entranced and she is able to explore realities beyond those we perceive with our physical senses. In this trance, the mudang is able to bring healing energy to those around her. We may not, today,as readily hear of the mountain grandmother, but the living experience of Korean shamans today tells us that she is still there,speaking her kindly messages to us, if only we will listen and hear her.
