Major spoilers for Companion (2025)

Looking at the Companion tag on Timblr because I just finished watching and totally loved it and I can't help but notice absolutely nobody talking about how the side relationship between Eli and Patrick was also fucked up. I'm seeing a lot of cute gifsets of the actors kissing and dancing and professing their love for each other. I've even seen people say they had hoped it would work out for them in the end.

It shouldn't have worked out for them because their love wasn't real! Patrick was programmed to think that Eli was the best most important person in his life, just like Iris was programmed to think about Josh. We was just as easily reprogrammed to replace Eli with Josh later in the movie. His feelings were not really his, and had he been released from his programming like Iris, he may have developed his own opinions, but he was not afforded the chance.

Now Eli undoubtedly treated Patrick better than Josh treated Iris, but his feelings were also not real because his experiences with Patrick were not real. They didn't actually meet at a party and start flirting over a dinosaur costume. Patrick was taken out of a box and booted up already full of adoration for Eli. All he does is cook for Eli, and kiss Eli, and gush over how much he loves every single little thing about Eli. He doesn't have a job or hobbies or interests or a personality outside of loving Eli. It's artificial. It's fake. There's nothing for Eli to love about Patrick besides how much Patrick adores him. He doesn't love Patrick, he loves how Patrick loves him.

I watched Companion and all I can think of is: what if Josh was stupid enough to forget to reboot Patrick when raising his aggression to 100% and Patrick connected the dots to figure out the mod made Iris extremely violent, completely out of her control, for this plan that resulted in what happened to Eli?
