Stormhouse (2011)

My rating: 3/10

A good (heck, even just competent) film crew can use lighting and color to create the illusion of darkness while still leaving everything clearly visible. These guys just turned off the lights, leaving the viewer with little more than some vague shapes, a mediocre audio drama and the distinct impression that the military is either very into mood lighting in their secret underground ghost bunkers or just forgot to install enough lamps. Either way, it's no good, and the "plot twist" at the end just really drives home how utterly nonsensical the whole premise is to begin with.

I have to say, though, the whole "possessed basketball" scene almost makes it worth it. That bit is hilarious.

I Listen to Her

About a year ago I told my friend Patrick that it was my goal to bring gender parity to my podcast feed. Today, Patrick’s podcast The Original Cast is one of three podcasts that I subscribe to that is hosted solely by men. And I subscribe to twenty-five podcasts. Yeah. I’m that person. 

Last month, Manoush Zomoroti theorized that listening to female-hosted podcasts is a feminist act. This is the same line of thought I had when I made the decision (along with many others) to read books mainly by women in 2015. (Which, thank god, carried into 2016 and hopefully the rest of my life.) It’s the same line of thought I had when I texted Patrick -- the only person I know who listens to as many podcasts as I do -- that I was going to change the way I listened to podcasts. 

At at the risk of sounding hyperbolic, I wholeheartedly agree that listening to these women on a weekly basis is a feminist act. Because what they’re doing is modeling that women’s voices have a place in an overwhelmingly male-dominated field. And on my end I’m saying yes to everything they have to say. Because honestly I don’t care that much about what men are talking about amongst themselves.

Without further ado, here are the women-hosted podcasts that are clogging up my feed. They’re the shows I can’t wait to listen to each week, the ones I’m still getting into, and everything in between.

If a podcast could be a best friend

Another Round. Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton ply their interviewees with alcohol and humor and the result is some of the most candid and effective interviewing I’ve ever heard.

Call Your Girlfriend. A feminist news show that feels like best friends Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow are sitting on the couch at the end of a long week when they’re actually broadcasting long distance from their closets. 

Death, Sex, & Money. Anna Sale could talk everyone into letting her achieve world domination if that’s what she wanted. Instead, she interviews people about the three little things society tries to keep quiet. I paused this week’s episode to write this and it’s killing me.

Invisibilia. Season two cannot come fast enough. In the first season, Alix Spiegel and Lulu Miller explore the invisible forces that shape human behavior. Season two welcomes Hanna Rosin as co-host and I am really looking forward to what the expanded team has in store. 

The Longest Shortest Time. I resisted this show for a long time because I’m not a parent and I was sure I wasn’t the audience for this. I was so wrong. Hillary Frank is a fantastic interviewer and I can only imagine the work that she and her team put into finding the people they talk to. Bonus: her ads are the only ones that I don’t fast forward through. 

Note to Self. Manoush Zomoroti clearly loves technology and puts out these bite sized episodes to both celebrate and interrogate the technology that guides (and often takes over) our lives.

Songs to Scream at the Sun is the coming of age story. It's about the growing process of a young kid shaking the chains of selfishness, but it's everything about what you lose and gain in that process of growing up.
