It’s safe to say that Marcelo Bielsa has made quite the impact with Leeds United, since he was appointed as their manager in 2018. Bielsa guided Leeds to a top-six finish in his first season, although their season came to a frustrating end after a defeat to Derby County in their play-off semi-final. However, they seem to have learned from that campaign, and are currently sat top of the Championship table with just nine matches still to play this term. One player that has played a key role for Bielsa’s side this season is Patrick Bamford, who has scored 13 goals in his 38 appearances for the Whites. Speaking in a Q&A for Leeds’ official Twitter account, Bamford issued an insight into working for Bielsa, and revealed that the squad are grateful for the impact he has made since arriving at Elland Road. “Hard! You’ve got to be mentally tuned in, you’ve got physically tuned in, but it’s rewarding. I think that if you ask anyone, you never get better if something is easy. “If you’re constantly playing in your comfort zone, you’re never going to get to that next step and he pushes us everyday. Whilst sometimes there is probably days where we don’t feel like it, our legs are hurting and we’re probably moaning, we understand why and we’re grateful because he’s the one that has transformed this club.” Bamford went on to state why he thought Leeds missed out on promotion last season, and revealed that there is a significant amount of respect between the squad and Bielsa. “If you look at what he did last year with the players, pretty much the same group of players who had been there the year before, and if it wasn’t for our own naivety, we’d have gone up last year and stormed the league. “You can see the sort of impact he has, it’s entertaining football, and you can see how hard every player works and after every game, every player is dead on their feet but that’s the way it is. I think the fact that he demands so much from us and we give it to him, there’s an awful lot of mutual respect between the group and him.” Can you remember which Leeds United manager signed these players? Test your knowledge in our quiz! The Verdict: It’s no surprise to see him speaking highly of Bielsa. The Argentine has worked wonders with Leeds United, as I can’t see any team catching them in the race for promotion into the Premier League this term. Bamford has shown real improvement under Bielsa’s guidance as well, and I think he’s one of the most underrated players in the starting XI for the Yorkshire-based side. He might not score as much as he’d like to, but his high-pressing from the front-line puts Leeds in strong positions higher up the pitch. 'Looks like a different player': Leeds star delivers verdict on 23-year-old winger - originally posted on Sportslens.com Patrick Bamford has picked four players for Leeds Player of the year. The Leeds United striker feels that Stuart Dallas, Ben White, Kalvin Phillips, and Jack Harrison should be in contention for the award. The Whites sit top of the Championship table after 37 games and are one of the favourites to secure promotion to the Premier League. Under Marcelo Bielsa, 2019-20 has been a memorable campaign for them and he has drawn high-level performances from every single player. However, Bamford is probably right with his judgement. All these players have been consistent throughout the campaign and have never let their form dip. Bamford has showered praise on Harrison saying he has looked like a different player this season. “Alongside them, I would say Jack Harrison. Look at him last year to this year, you could see he had the quality with the odd bits and bobs and had the potential. This year, he looks like a different player for me,” said Bamford. “He’s confident, he’s having more of an end result, more reliable for what will come. It will either be a good cross or a shot. Last year that wasn’t the case. I think he’s up there as well.” The 23-year-old winger joined Leeds last season on loan from Manchester City and showed his class in bits and parts. He joined the Elland Road club on loan again from City during the summer and has shown remarkable consistency throughout the campaign. Harrison has recently claimed that he wants to play in the Premier League with Leeds. However, if that doesn’t happen, he would try to achieve that dream with Manchester City. When Harrison joined Leeds from City there was a clause inserted in his contract where the Whites could sign him permanently for £8 million. Surely, Leeds will take that option if they secure promotion to the Premier League at the end of the campaign. Although Leeds United’s promotion push is on hold for the foreseeable future, the club appears to be preparing for the long-run, that’s if fresh reports are to be believed. According to Le Quotidien du Foot, the west Yorkshire outfit are interested in signing Metz forward Habib Diallo this summer but could face stern competition from the likes of Chelsea, Leicester City and Crystal Palace. It’s claimed that he is likely to cost €20m (£17.8m) as he still has a little over two years remaining on his current contract. In the past, Diallo has also been linked to Tottenham Hotspur as well as Lyon, so Leeds are in quite good company if they are to contest for his signature. And the 24-year-old has been in prolific form this campaign, which makes for an interesting case over whether or not Marcelo Bielsa should try and land him. WORLD CLASS SCORE: 95% | EXPERT SCORE: 80% | VETERAN SCORE: 65% | INTERMEDIATE SCORE: 45% | AMATEUR SCORE: 30% | TRY AGAIN: 5% Metz are languishing down in 15th in their first season back in Ligue 1 and hold a healthy seven-point cushion to the relegation spots, and key to their fortunes has been the 6 foot 1 talisman – especially as he’s been named captain on frequent occasions. Despite playing in a lowly team, Diallo has still found the net 12 times in 26 top-flight matches, via Transfermarkt, which is a better strike rate than Patrick Bamford’s 13 goals in 36 games in the Championship. The 24-year-old has important strikes against the likes of Saint-Etienne and Monaco, two teams that have tasted European football in recent times, so it shows he can compete amongst the big boys. Diallo (2.9) also scores with fewer shots at goal than Bamford (3.4) and is averaging more key passes (0.9), dribbles (0.8) and aerial duels won (4.3) per game too, via WhoScored. At just £17.8m, the Senegalese international would be an absolute snip should Leeds indeed go up, especially as he’s outperforming Bielsa’s current first-choice in so many areas.
