The problems with marking dark fabric
Sure, there's chalk in its various forms; pencils, tailor's triangles, chalk board bits you've sharpened out of desperation, but one I've found to be perfect for marking patterns you intend to cut out on dark fabrics are Sakura white gel pens. I know, the time-honored advise is to never use ink, because it could bleed in the wash and ruin your project, but it's in the seam allowance and I've never had it bleed. Also, take into consideration some of the silky, non-organic fabrics like liners... they slip, slide and chalk doesn't really stick to them. These pens are just that, pens they WILL stick. Make your life easier next time you want to add a dark lining to a jacket or something and use one of these pens to mark your pattern out for cutting! They aren't the cheapest pens on earth, but they last a long time, just be sure to cap them when done as they will dry out like all pens. If the tip gets blodgy (my word) just use an old sponge or some scrap fabric to de-blodgy it. I find when using them on textured surfaces like canvas, they will tend to do that but, again, you're drawing a cutting line so really compared to chalk, even with a few blobs here and there you're going to get a more precision line to begin with.
