It’s not clear if Alex has picked up on the game. But maybe she’s playing a different one, because after she finishes her first glass of wine, she reaches across the table to where Patty’s hand is resting and takes it in hers. It’s so startlingly insubordinate for a new employee that Patty is stunned into silence for a moment, and by the time she’s come up with the words she wants to use to scold or even berate Alex for the crossed line, Alex has gone a step further. It’s not completely incriminating, not yet, but she’s sliding her thumb across the pulse point in Patty’s wrist, smooth but firm against the tender skin. As soon she does it, Patty no longer feels off balance. She knows what Alex is doing. All she needs to do is decide how she wants to react. “I want to be of assistance to you,” Alex says. It almost sounds earnest, but not quite. Patty’s done enough depositions to be able to tell. But she can also tell that Alex isn’t looking for blackmail, or a sexual harassment suit. What Alex wants, clearly, is to distinguish herself. To become invaluable.
